The Washington Post ^ | March 27, 2014 | Timothy R. Smith
James R. Schlesinger, a Republican economist who advanced rapidly to some of the highest positions of government power in the 1970s but whose abrasive leadership style led to conflicts with presidents, bureaucrats and the American public, died March 27 at a hospital in Baltimore. He was 85... Mr. Schlesinger specialized in the economics of national security, which helped propel his rise during the Cold War from academia to influential jobs in the federal government, including CIA director, secretary of defense and the nation’s first secretary of energy...

In the spring of 1971, President Nixon was chewing the fat in the Oval Office with John Ehrlichman and Bob Haldeman when the president brought up an episode he'd just seen of CBS's new hit TV show "All in the Family." He was as mortified as Archie Bunker to learn that Archie's old friend, a former NFL linebacker, was gay. "I turned the goddamned thing off. I couldn't listen anymore," President Nixon fumed. "Goddamn it, I don't think you should glorify on public television homosexuality. . . . What do you think that does to eleven- and twelve-year-old boys? ....

  • After Comparing Christie to Nixon for Nine Days, Chris Matthews

    NewsBusters.org ^ | January 21, 2014 | Scott Whitlock
Chris Matthews really doesn’t listen when he speaks. On every program since Chris Christie’s bridge scandal broke on January 8, the MSNBC anchor has smeared the Republican governor as just like Richard Nixon in Watergate. Matthews has done this for nine straight shows, including the January 20 edition. However, on the same program, with no sense of self awareness, a thought occurred to the anchor. He announced that if “it is discovered that Governor Christie did not encourage political revenge, did not signal that this is the way he wanted political business conducted, then he will be exonerated before the...

The FBI is not planning to file criminal charges involving the Internal Revenue Service's extra scrutiny of the Tea Party and other conservative groups, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing law enforcement officials. The newspaper quoted officials as saying that investigators probing the IRS actions, which unleashed a political furor in Washington, did not uncover the type of political bias or "enemy hunting" that would constitute a criminal violation. The evidence showed a mismanaged agency enforcing rules it did not understand on applications for tax exemptions, the Journal reported. The case is still under investigation, but criminal charges...

OBAMA'S CRIMES ARE WORST THAN NIXON'S More Calls for Impeachment of Obama after NSA Ruling Posted on December 22, 2013 by LaRouche Irish Brigade Larry Klayman, the attorney who brought the lawsuit that won a restraining order against the National Security Agency, has called Obama’s crimes far worse than Nixon’s, and is calling for the impeachment for Obama. In an interview with World Net Daily, for which Klayman also writes, he said, “In Watergate, Richard Nixon faced impeachment for breaking into the offices of the chairman of the Democratic National Party….Obama has broken into the homes of 300 million Americans.”...

By shifting the spectrum of debate, here's how America's rightward march has been normalized throughout history. From Nixon to Reagan to Gingrich to Bush to Paul Ryan and Chris Christie today, leaders who’ve shifted America to the right have been aided by moderating misrepresentations. In the case of Reagan, it was not just the man, but conservatism itself that received the flattering reinterpretation. That was a difference that mattered; it goes to the heart of why Reagan is the American right’s touchstone. But the more general process of misrepresenting and reinterpreting increasingly radical ideological figures as if they were normal,...

As Adolf Hitler pulled the world ever closer to conflict in 1939, Mohandas Gandhi wrote him a personal letter, urging him to pull back from the brink 'for the sake of humanity'. The German dictator never received the letter because it was intercepted by the British government - but it's been published in a book called Letters Of Note, along with many other remarkable missives. Here we've selected some of the most memorable. Along with Gandhi's letter they include a child's dietary advice for President Nixon, a tongue-in-cheek reply to a fan from Steve Martin and a letter from the...
  • Obama's Current Approval Rating Is The Ugliest Since Nixon

President Barack Obama is ending his fifth year in office with the lowest approval ratings at this point in the presidency since President Richard Nixon, according to a new Washington Post/ABC poll released Tuesday. Obama's approval rating in the poll stands at 43%. By comparison, President George W. Bush had a 47% approval rating at the end of the fifth year of his presidency. And all other Post-World War II presidents had approval ratings above 50% — with the exception of Nixon, who, amid the Watergate scandal, had a dreadful 29% approval rating.

Richard Nixon thought Lyndon Johnson killed John F. Kennedy, according to legendary political operative Roger Stone. “Richard Nixon told me in 1982 that he immediately knew who Jack Ruby was when he saw him shoot Oswald,” Stone told The Daily Caller in an extensive interview. Stone’s new book The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ is currently tearing up the Amazon bestseller list and even earned praise from Ron Paul. Among other revelations, Stone told TheDC that Nixon hired Jack Ruby as a House committee informant at Johnson’s request years prior to the Kennedy assassination, which occurred 50...

Had there been no Dallas, there would been no Camelot. There would have been no John F. Kennedy as brilliant statesman cut off in his prime, had it not been for those riveting days from Dealey Plaza to Arlington and the lighting of the Eternal Flame. Along with the unsleeping labors of an idolatrous press and the propagandists who control America's popular culture, those four days created and sustained the Kennedy Myth. But, over 50 years, the effect has begun to wear off. The New York Times reports that in the ranking of presidents, Kennedy has fallen further and faster...

It’s been a rough fifth year in office for President Obama, with overwrought sequestration scare tactics, Scandalpalooza, and the Syrian debacle all chipping away at his leadership street cred, among other things — but this disaster of an ObamaCare rollout is really hammering the heightened disapproval home with what’s starting to look like a majority of Americans. During past job-performance dips, O’s job approval rating has been reliably bolstered by his personal favorability ratings and Americans’ sense of trust in him — but the health care law is helping to erode those usual go-to’s, and quickly. On November 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States in a bitter contest against the incumbent Vice President, Richard Nixon. It was one of the closest elections in American history, and some people still doubt its outcome. The New York Times called the election for then-Senator Kennedy just before midnight. NBC News didn’t call the race until 7 a.m. the following morning. All night, the newly empowered national television networks had forecast that Kennedy was leading, but in a race that was too close to call. In 1990, the late John Chancellor recalled the chaos...

I found this book about Watergate and Nixon. It is eye opener right form the beginning. The Watergate scandal rocked the American public, while there was a huge outrage regarding the scandal itself, few have delved into the events surrounding the 25th Amendment, or how unnoticed the 25th Amendment (inspired by Nelson Rockefeller) and was enacted into law. It’s a good read and revealing relationships of Nixon, Agnew, Kissinger, Rockefeller and the events that orchestrated in to the Watergate scandals.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Friday argued that “Americans are losing [health care] coverage by political design” through Obamacare. He said the White House knew millions of Americans would lose their coverage, adding that “Richard Nixon resigned over a lie nowhere near this big.” “And you know the hell of it is that Obama doesn’t think he lied. I don’t think Obama, in his mind, is capable of lying. Whatever is necessary to say or do to advance the agenda is what is morally correct. Doesn’t matter. He doesn’t care. He doesn’t think he lied,” Limbaugh said. He went...

On the afternoon of July 12, 1974, House and Senate Democratic leaders were arriving early at the White House — well before their demoralized Republican counterparts. And were they ever pumped! As they trouped into the President’s office for their photo-op, it became clear they considered this a victory party. They almost literally pranced around the Oval Office giving each other the 1970s equivalent of high-fives and chest bumps.

Leonard Downie, a former executive editor of The Washington Post, is the Weil family professor of journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. This article is based on his report “The Obama Administration and the Press,” forthcoming Thursday from the Committee to Protect Journalists. In the Watergate era, the Nixon administration’s telephone wiretaps were the biggest concern for journalists and sources worried about government surveillance. That was one of the reasons why Bob Woodward met with FBI official Mark Felt (a.k.a. “Deep Throat”) in an underground parking garage in Arlington, and why he and Carl...
