  • FIRST-PERSON: Russian Bear awakening to morality

    02/12/2014 9:39:43 AM PST · by kronos77 · 26 replies
ALEXANDRIA, La. (BP) -- God once used a donkey to alert a wayward prophet that he was on the wrong track. Could it be the Lord is using a bear, a Russian Bear, to do the same with the nations of the West, in particular the United States? "Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values," Russian President Valdimir Putin said in his state of the nation address in mid-December, The Washington Times reported. Putin continued, "Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in...
  • Black history has become a commodity traded by Republicans and corporations

Since 1976, when it was officially recognized, it has become a tool used by black activists to shame businesses, schools and politicians into showing blacks they "care". And companies seem only too happy to oblige, even though I doubt if any of them really care about black history at all. As February rolls around, we see corporations from McDonald's to Northrup Grumman advertizing Black History Month. The ads usually begin with "we salute" or "we celebrate", but they simply don't want to be called racist for not acknowledging it. It's hypocritical for businesses to honor Black History Month when the...
  • Google subsidiary to run nearby federal airfield

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. government has picked a Google subsidiary to run and renovate a federal airfield that is frequently used for the personal flights of the Internet company's billionaire executives. The decision announced Monday clears the way for Google's Planetary Ventures LLC to take over management of the 1,000-acre Moffett Federal Airfield, a former U.S. Navy based 4 miles from Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. The airfield, which was built in the 1930s, has been managed by NASA's Ames Research Center for the past 23 years. Financial terms of the new arrangement still must be worked out...
  • Russia's Anti-Gay Law, Spelled Out in Plain English

On June 30 this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill banning the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations to minors," thus opening a new, dark chapter in the history of gay rights in Russia. The law caps a period of ferocious activities by the Russian government aimed at limiting the rights of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people. The violations of fundamental, constitutionally protected rights of Russia’s gay citizens have included multiple bans on gay pride parades in Moscow and other cities, hefty fines to gay rights groups accused of acting as a “foreign...

  • ‘Pampered’ Media Members Facing Backlash For Tweeting Sochi Problems

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Yellow, murky tap water. Warnings about what a toilet can and can’t handle. Missing floors, door handles and light bulbs. The complaints have been flooding in – and going viral on social media – as media members get settled for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. But just as quickly there’s backlash forming from people who say journalists need to stop grumbling about their accommodations in Russia and start focusing on covering the games. One columnist in the Toronto Star even accused reporters from around the globe of turning “into Ugly Americans when venturing beyond their comfort...

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) - While talking with a reporter covering the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the deputy prime minister of Olympic preparations revealed that video surveillance equipment is documenting shower activity in hotel rooms. “We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day,” the official, Dmitry Kozak, was quoted as saying by The Wall Street Journal.
  • Vatican blasts back at UN report on pedophile priests, abortion

The Vatican blasted back at a UN report that accused it of allowing children to be abused by priests and condemned its stances on homosexuality, contraception and abortion, saying the findings were "ideological" and likely driven by critics of the church's "non-negotiable" teachings. The U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child, whose members have included such nations as Saudi Arabia, Syria, Uganda and Thailand, accused the Vatican Wednesday of "systematically" adopting policies that allowed priests to rape and molest tens of thousands of children over decades, and urged it to open its files on pedophiles and bishops who concealed their...
  • Coakley-Kayyem: That's the bold ticket Democrats need

Here is some unsolicited and free advice for Attorney General Martha Coakley, one of five Democrats running for governor: Be bold. Convince Juliette Kayyem, the other female candidate running for governor, to team up with you and run as your running mate for lieutenant governor. Kayyem, an accomplished woman in her own right, as well as an articulate and forceful candidate, may not want to do it. But if she did, it would seriously shake up the race for governor and put you on a path to win the governorship.

Investigators told the Associated Press that the student had been taken into custody alive. Details of the student's identity were not immediately available.  Russia Today reported that the gunman entered School No. 263 and threatened the school's security guard before making his way to a biology classroom, where he took 29 10th-grade students hostage before releasing most of them soon after. It is not clear when the rest of...

  • Five Reasons Obama May Cave On The Keystone Pipeline

Despite years of acrimonious delay, the Keystone XL pipeline project is increasingly likely to receive the green light from the U.S. government sometime this year. ... In the end, intense pressure from constituencies close to the Obama Administration will force the President to align himself with the project. Here are the top five reasons why the government will finally be compelled to take action on this hot-button issue and why it will probably happen sooner rather than later. 1) The U.S. Midterm elections - Nothing changes policy faster than an election and this year it looks like several members of...

  • Half of American fans say 'supernatural' forces are in play during sports events

So do you say a little prayer during a pivotal play or wear lucky socks during a big game? You are not alone. “Just ahead of the 2014 Super Bowl, 50 percent of sports fans see some aspect of the supernatural at play in sports, meaning they either pray to God to help their team, have thought their team was cursed at some point in time, or believe that God plays a role in determining the outcome of sporting events,” reports a new survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, a nonpartisan, non-profit group based in the nation’s capital....
  • Northeast and Mid-Atlantic power prices react to winter freeze and natural gas constraints

    Energy Information Administration ^ | JANUARY 21, 2014 | Energy Information Administration
A record-setting bout of bitter cold weather swept down through the Midwest and across most of the country in early January. The Northeast region reacted with upward spikes in wholesale natural gas and power prices as generators and other customers struggled to procure natural gas supplies. In the Mid-Atlantic region, record-high winter peak demand along with unexpected outages of power plants and natural gas equipment drove peak electricity prices even higher than in New York and New England. The sharp rise in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic natural gas and power demand also spurred record-high natural gas storage withdrawals. The PJM Interconnection's...
