The N.C. Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that the state legislature had the authority in 2018 to place two Constitutional amendments on the ballot, one capping income tax and the other calling for voter ID. However, the ruling doesn’t mean that people will have to show a photo ID when they vote this year. There are two other ongoing lawsuits where judges have found North Carolina’s voter ID law appears to be unconstitutional, one in state court and one in federal court. As long as those other lawsuits and legal rulings continue to block voter ID from going into place,...

A North Carolina court ruled Friday that outstanding restitution, fees or other court-imposed monetary obligations can’t prevent convicted felons from voting if they’ve completed all other portions of their sentence. The ruling, which may face appeals, could pave the way for an influx of thousands of felons to have their voting rights restored amid hotly contested races for the presidency and U.S. Senate in the battleground state. It wasn’t immediately clear how many were affected by the ruling, but lawyers for the plaintiffs said it was in the thousands. A statement issued by Forward Justice, one of the advocacy groups...

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nineteen foreign nationals face federal charges in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina for illegally voting in the 2016 federal elections, according to federal charges publicly announced on Wednesday. These charges are the latest indictments to result from an ongoing years-long federal criminal investigation being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Raleigh office. A federal grand jury in Wilmington charged seven foreign nationals on August 31 on federal felony charges including falsely claiming U.S. citizenship or making false statements on voter registration application, and with misdemeanor charges...

Two years ago, a detective in North Carolina gained access to a chat group on the messenger app Kik where strangers were exchanging child pornography, according to court filings. The discovery and subsequent investigation reportedly saved eight children from sexually abusive situations. Now the first person police brought down in the investigation has been sentenced to prison. **SNIP** “Many of the offenders had taken significant steps to mask their identities,” prosecutors said in Wednesday’s news release. “The investigative team engaged these offenders online and tricked them into revealing personal identifying information.” At least 38 leads were sent to other law...

President Trump on Wednesday suggested supporters in North Carolina should illegally attempt to vote both by mail and in person, saying doing so would test the integrity of the system. Asked by reporters whether he trusted North Carolina's mail-in balloting system, the president responded, "Let them send it in, and let them go vote, and if their system's as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. If it isn't tabulated, they'll be able to vote." "If it's as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. If...

July 29 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man on the hunt for the final top prize in a scratch-off lottery game said he visited about 40 different stores before scratching off the $5 million winner. Kevin Clark of Candler told North Carolina Education Lottery officials he read there was only one top prize remaining in the $5,000,000 Mega Cash scratch-off game, so he set off Thursday to buy as many of the $20 tickets as he could locate. "I had a real good feeling it was going to be in the western part of the state," Clark said. "I went...

CHARLOTTE — North Carolina will stay in Phase 2 for at least another five weeks. Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday that the state will not be moving into Phase 3 on Friday when his extension was set to expire, but instead will remain in Phase 2 until Sept. 11. Bars, nightclubs and gyms have been closed since March 30, when Cooper first issued an executive order in hopes of slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Many were hoping to reopen alongside restaurants and retail stores when North Carolina moved into Phase 2: Safer at Home on May 22, but bars...

RALEIGH, N.C. - Lawyers for North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest argued before a judge on Tuesday over whether Cooper’s COVID-19 orders shuttering businesses and demanding face coverings were lawfully imposed. The hearing involving two rivals in the November election - running against each other for governor - focused on whether the Council of State needed to consent to Cooper’s executive orders first before they could be carried out. Forest sued Cooper last month, saying the governor failed to get the concurrence of the 10-member council - composed of Forest, Cooper and eight other...

Trump campaign stickers are turning up on wild black bear tracking collars, leading a liberal group to offer a $5,000 reward for information. Putting Trump stickers on a wild animal is cruel and inhuman. It's just not OK.
