Raleigh, N.C. — As counties across the state continue to tally provisional ballots, Gov. Pat McCrory on Tuesday formally requested a statewide recount in his contested gubernatorial race with Attorney General Roy Cooper. McCrory's campaign said the recount was filed to "meet the original date statutorily specified, although the formal recount will not occur until after the county boards of election certify their results." "With many outstanding votes yet to be counted for the first time, legal challenges, ballot protests and voter fraud allegations, we must keep open the ability to allow the established recount process to ensure every legal...

Just when you thought the 2016 election was over, they pull you back in. Or rather, they want to kick you back out. Democrats in North Carolina have begun calling for Governor Pat McCrory to concede his re-election bid against Roy Cooper after coming up 6,500 votes short — and having several recount and challenge bids denied. Thus far, McCrory’s not playing along: McCrory’s challenger Democrat state Attorney General Roy Cooper has said repeatedly that he won the race and received big support from Democratic lawmakers who believe there’s no way McCrory can win.“By any definition, Roy Cooper has...
  • Claims of votes by the dead, felons cloud North Carolina governor race

North Carolina's gubernatorial race was undecided 10 days after the Nov. 8 vote and new allegations by the Republican incumbent's campaign about felons and dead people casting ballots could leave the outcome in limbo for weeks. Republican Governor Pat McCrory, trailing Democratic challenger Roy Cooper by about 6,300 votes according to the state elections website Friday afternoon, has not conceded. Under state law, Friday was the deadline for counties to certify their results. But challenges over the validity of hundreds of votes and reviews of provisional ballots were expected to delay the reports from many, if not all, of the...

Ten days after the November 8 vote, the North Carolina governor's race is still undeclared, after Republican's allege that dead people and felons were casting ballots.  Republican Governor Pat McCrory, who is trailing Democratic challenger Roy Cooper by about 6,300 votes according to the state elections website Friday afternoon, has not conceded.  Challenges over the validity of hundreds of votes and reviews of provisional ballots were expected to delay the reports from many, if not all, of the state's 100 counties, elections officials said. 'It is unfortunate to see that rather than accepting the results, Pat McCrory is going to...

A North Carolina prosecutor has asked state and federal investigators to help determine if a 69-year-old Vietnam veteran was fatally shot because he supported Donald Trump. However, the local sheriff says there's no evidence yet to connect the drive-by shooting to the campaign sign in the victim's yard. Vance County Sheriff Peter White says Raymond Harrell died at a Durham hospital Tuesday, nearly a month after he was shot while standing in his doorway. The bullet struck near his rib cage. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that District Attorney Michael Waters wants the case reviewed as a possible...

Formal protests are now being filed in 11 additional counties to challenge potentially fraudulent absentee ballots cast for Roy Cooper and other Democrats, according to Governor Pat McCrory's campaign.A formal protest was filed with the Bladen County Board of Elections to challenge several hundred absentee ballots, alleged to be fraudulent on Tuesday. The initial evidence laid out in the protest suggests a "massive scheme to run an absentee ballot mill involving hundreds of ballots, perpetrated by and through the Bladen County Improvement Association PAC," a political-action committee funded by the N.C. Democrat Party and other prominent statewide Democrats.  In addition to...

DURHAM, N.C. — Following a complaint filed by a North Carolina Republican Party attorney, the Durham County Board of Elections voted Wednesday to hold an evidentiary hearing to determine whether a recount of 94,000 general election ballots is warranted . . . Republicans have also challenged mail-in absentee ballots in Bladen and Halifax counties, claiming that the same few people witnessed numerous ballots. That challenge was expanded to 11 counties- Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Guilford, Nash, Northampton, Robeson, Vance, Wake and Warren- Wednesday evening

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — A military officer testified Monday that he saw another soldier shot in the head during the 2009 search for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who's accused of endangering his comrades when he walked off his post in Afghanistan. The testimony came at a pretrial hearing at which an Army judge also agreed to delay Bergdahl's trial by several months until May 15, 2017. Prosecutors are arguing that the judge should allow evidence of two wounded soldiers' injuries into the case to help them show that Bergdahl's disappearance effectively put other military members in harm's way.

Raleigh, N.C. — In a formal complaint to the Durham County Board of Elections, Thomas Stark, the attorney for the North Carolina Republican Party on Saturday demanded a recount of votes cast on and before Election Day, citing a counting error involving 90,000 ballots. Thomas Stark, general counsel for the GOP and a Durham County voter, filed the protest with the Durham County Board of Elections, alleging malfeasance in regard to the accuracy of the count. In the complaint, Stark says the county used data from potentially corrupt tabulation machines from five early voting sites and one general election precinct....

-excerpt- North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory said in a news release Thursday that he was declaring a state of emergency for one-quarter of North Carolina's 100 counties. He said the declaration will help with evacuations and provide more state assets to fight the wildfires and support those who were evacuated. -excerpt- “As eastern North Carolina was underwater due to flooding from Hurricane Matthew, the western part of the state has been suffering from a severe drought and now hundreds of acres are burning,” said Governor McCrory.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Trump train that carried Republicans to victory all over the South may have left one car behind in North Carolina — Gov. Pat McCrory, who trailed by a few thousand votes Thursday in a still too-close-to-call race that played out amid anger over the state's transgender bathroom law. The law limiting LGBT rights appeared to have a substantial role in the Election Day contest between McCrory, who signed the measure and vigorously defended it against boycotts and other protests, and Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, who called for its repeal.

Republicans had excellent results in Tuesday’s high-stakes Senate races, winning numerous tough battles to preserve their majority in the chamber for the next two years. But Tuesday’s results revealed an interesting dynamic: The Republican Senate candidates who rejected President-elect Donald Trump and tried to go it alone were the only ones who ended up losing their races. Overall, there were eight Republican-held seats and one Democrat-held seat that were competitive going into Tuesday night: Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. Of the nine Republicans in these competitive races, six of them stood by Trump...

The North Carolina governor's race was too close to call early Wednesday, with Republican incumbent Pat McCrory and Democratic challenger Roy Cooper neck-and-neck in an election that mimicked a referendum on the state's rightward political shift, including the law McCrory signed limiting LGBT rights. With some cast votes yet to be reported, Cooper was only about 3,700 votes ahead of McCrory out of more than 4.6 million counted, according to totals posted by the State Board of Elections.
