As The Post's Liz Sly recently noted, the war in Syria has become a tangled web of conflict dominated by "al Qaeda veterans, hardened Iraqi insurgents, Arab jihadist ideologues and Western volunteers." On the surface, those competing actors are fueled by an overlapping mixture of ideologies and political agendas. Just below it, experts suspect, they're powered by something else: Captagon. A tiny, highly addictive pill produced in Syria and widely available across the Middle East, its illegal sale funnels hundreds of millions of dollars back into the war torn country's black market economy each year, likely giving militias access to...

A 15-year-old girl is reportedly falling asleep up to 30 times a day after getting a flu shot. Australia’s News Limited reports Chloe Glasson began suffering from narcolepsy four months after being injected with Pandemrix, a vaccine to combat against swine flu, in November 2009. She is one of at least 100 people to suffer from the sleeping disorder after getting vaccinated with Pandemrix. “She has gone from being a bright, outgoing girl to one who cannot go out on her own,” Rebecca Glasson, Chloe’s mother, told News Limited. “She doesn’t doze for more than a couple of hours at...

Insomniacs desperate for some zzzs may one day have a safer way to get them. Scientists have developed a new sleep medication that has induced sleep in rodents and monkeys without apparently impairing cognition, a potentially dangerous side effect of common sleep aids. The discovery, which originated in work explaining narcolepsy, could lead to a new class of drugs that help people who don't respond to other treatments. Between 10% and 15% of Americans chronically struggle with getting to or staying asleep. Many of them turn to sleeping pills for relief, and most are prescribed drugs, such as zolpidem (Ambien)...

Emelie is plagued by hallucinations and nightmares. When she wakes up, she's often paralyzed, unable to breathe properly or call for help. During the day she can barely stay awake, and often misses school or having fun with friends. She is only 14, but at times she has wondered if her life is worth living. Emelie is one of around 800 children in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe who developed narcolepsy, an incurable sleep disorder, after being immunized with the Pandemrix H1N1 swine flu vaccine made by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in 2009.

Last week, President Obama's Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments in a case that pits religious protections against the courts' ordinary ability to intervene in a labor dispute to prevent discrimination. In the early 2000s, Cheryl Perich was a "called teacher" or "commissioned minister" at Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in Redford, Mich. As such, she taught religious classes, led students in prayer and incorporated religious teachings into secular subjects like math, science, social studies and art.But in 2004, she was diagnosed with narcolepsy and became unable to teach the fall semester that year. When she...

There aren't too many things that can brighten up a persons disposition better then seeing puppies frolicking about as they explore their surroundings. It usually doesn't take long for them to wear themselves out either. That's why one moment they can be chewing on each others ears, and the next moment be falling asleep as if they were a mechanical toy who's batteries have just died. It's also comical they way they will fall asleep in the middle of what ever it is they are doing, as if they suffer from some form of animal narcolepsy. He is your...

Enlarge ImageMystery disease. Scientists monitor a narcoleptic patient. Credit: Donna E. Natale Planas/Miami Herald/MCT/Newscom The millions of people who suffer from narcolepsy might have their immune system to blame. Researchers have tied the disabling sleep disorder to two immune system genes, suggesting that it's an autoimmune disease. The discovery may eventually lead to improved narcolepsy treatments. Narcolepsy affects 1 in every 2000 people, making it about as common as multiple sclerosis. The disorder encompasses an odd constellation of symptoms, including overwhelming daytime drowsiness, uncontrollable sleep attacks, and cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle tone after an intense emotional outburst,...

I drove out to San Francisco yesterday and spent the night there so as to be ready for court this morning—nothing major at all, just a minor misdameanor.

San Francisco is a kind of heaven. Not the boring sort of cotton-wadded hell that they told you about in Sunday school, but a vibrant, living place with lights and style. It is the only city I know, with the possible exception of Boston, that has a personality. Los Angeles has no personality; just plastic surgery. But San Francisco is alive. I consider it proof, by the way, that liberalism is better than conservatism. No sane person would prefer to live in Salt Lake City than San Francisco.

It's really hard to extract any truth from FR. Here's another shot. I've heard a lot about judicial activism and maliciously liberal judges, but have not heard exactly what they have done. I am a kid whose beliefs have not solidified yet. My parents are very conservative and want me to turn into one too. So I come to this website to learn about the movement, but all you guys do is yell about things that don't seem wrong to me. Here's my question: would is be possible for anyone here to write down 20 liberal usurpations, 20 times that...

Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. • This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...

I am a concervative Yellow Lab who just got interested in politics do to the fact that the Democarts are starting to tick me off and I blame them for the rise in dog food. My liberal owner is a flaming lib who only gives me dry puppy food and woun't give me any meat products like a nice can or two of moist alpo. I also like hotdogs and other meat products. I will do anything for a hotdog and if you gave me some polish sausage I...

I am so mad at Judge Greer, I could spit. I will be protesting him in the morning in the Wal Mart parking lot. I am putting together my protest sign, but I need a good slogan. I am thinking something catchy using "Greer" and "queer" would be clever, but I can't think of anyhting good. Would the freepers please help me with this?

Gas costs so much. I cant afford it. Why want Bush do something? Don't say he can't. His daddy or his handlers could be on the phone in 2 minutes with the Rothchilds and by 1 week, oil prices would be under $20 and gas would be 1 dollar a gallon. You know it and I know it. Why want he? Do you know? Is there sombody we can call? Plaese advice.

You folks would consider me a liberal, and I am not embarrassed at the label. I certainly believe in a safety net for society and helping minorites who otherwise would not be given opportunities. I had heard about FreeRepublic and expected this site to be a sinister plotting device for crazed right wing freaks. It's really not that at all. It is mostly a chatty mix of simplicities and Bush hero worship. It's actually rather timid here, you might even say banal. I guess it's the sort of intellectually challenged place that you would expect from red state denizens who...

Well, there I was, minding my own damn business, settling into my little world with my 'puter, logging on to Free Republic after a hearty dinner of frozen DiGiorno pizza and 5 or 6 Guinness, and I notice...I HAVE MAIL!!!! Then I opened my mail, and this is what I got: Re: Mohammed, The Last Prophet: The Animated MovieFrom Nah | 03/15/2005 5:31:11 PM EST newYah this was probably 3 years ago but im sure you remember laughing about prophet mohammed and making fun of him with all your other pathetic people but let...

Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Hey! Sorry for posting this new thread. I am not sure, maybe there is already a thread on the problem I’d like to discuss now. Still I want to say something else on the issue. I am sure you all know it is much told and discussed over the CTBT - the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty - and the role of America in it. The CTBT was designed to prevent testing of nuclear weapons and hence reduce the chance of an arms race. I am an American patriot and I believe that the US Senate did...

how did we end up here? are we so involved with the day to day grind, the rush for free time to enjoy friends and family that we have ignored our duty as employers of the largest company in the world to hold accountable the employees that work for us the people just like a parent whose child has grown and become more indipendent we give more responsiblity and less oversight on the assumption that being more responsible they would never bend or ignore the rules we have set forth yet here we are complaining of taxes, rules and laws that we...
