An unarmed grandfather in the early stages of dementia was shot dead by police while he walked around the block near his home. Francisco Serna, 73, was hit nine times by gunfire from police in Bakersfield, California, answering a call about a man with a gun - but no weapon was recovered from the scene. CLEVELAND (AP) - An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges for fatally shaking and beating his 1-month-old daughter earlier this year. A plea agreement calls for 22-year-old Maurice Quarles, of Cleveland, to serve 25 years to life in prison. Quarles entered his guilty pleas Wednesday in a Cleveland courtroom on the day his trial was set to begin. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 3.

A judge has sentenced suburban Atlanta father Justin Ross Harris to life in prison without parole for the murder of his 22-month-old son, Cooper, who died in 2014 after Harris left him in a hot car for seven hours while he went to work. Tulsa hit a new high for homicides in a year early Friday with a pair of deaths, including a woman who died after being stabbed during an altercation with a friend who was helping her move. Tahmachqua Floyd, 24, was the city’s 72nd homicide victim of 2016. The previous record of 71 was set in 2009, according to Tulsa World and Tulsa Police Department records.
