New Jersey police department helps woman fulfill dying wish Associated Press 03/10/17,Updated: 1 day ago SHIP BOTTOM, N.J.A New Jersey police officer has helped a dying woman fulfill her final wish of going to the beach one last time. Pat Kelly, 78, of Burlington City, has a terminal diagnosis of acute leukemia and is in hospice care. WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reports her family asked her what she’d like to do before dying. “I said, ‘Go to the shore,’” Kelly said. Her family asked the Ship Bottom Police Department for help in getting her there. So, on a weekend trip to...

The Dominican Republic got one step closer to punching its ticket to the second round of the World Baseball Classic on Saturday, besting the United States in a clash of two Pool C titans. With back-to-back home runs from Nelson Cruz and Starling Marte in the eighth inning, the Dominican Republic stormed back from a five-run deficit and improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 7-5 win in Miami. The game was played before a raucous, sold-out crowd of 37,446, establishing a new record for Marlins Park. The ballpark's previous high was 37,116 on Opening Day in 2014. The...
  • The Haters are too quiet

    Personal Observation | 3/11/17
Is it me, or have The Haters been, relatively, but surprisingly quiet this past week? The New York Times and Washington Post are relatively tame today. My search on google news for "Donald Trump" does not contain nearly the amount of lies, smear jobs and fake news. The Hollywood uglies like Lena Dunham, Rosie O'Donnell and Michael Moore have been quiet. What happened to the nastiness, vileness and vitriol? What happened to all the hate? The pause in the battle began a week ago when Trump accused Obama of witetapping him, but that might be just a coincidence. I suspect...
  • Combat-hardened WWII PT boat makes triumphant return to the water

Senior Captain George Benedetto pushes the throttle forward, and PT-305 – the only combat-hardened World War II boat of its kind to be sailing today – rumbles even faster through the waters of Louisiana’s Lake Ponchartrain, bobbing up and down as wind hits the captain’s helm with an intensity enough to make one’s eyes squint. “We’re setting a speed record for this millennium!” gushes Mark Masor, a naval architect, holding up a phone app indicating that the 73-year-old boat is pushing 30 knots (around 34 mph), the fastest it has gone since the completion of its restoration. pt-305 WWII boat...

  • Rockies ace steps away after cancer fight takes a turn

Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis is taking a break from baseball to undergo chemotherapy after discovering that his testicular cancer has spread. The Rockies said Bettis, who had a testicle removed Nov. 29, would undergo cancer treatment “over the next several weeks” in Arizona. There is no timetable for his return. Bettis said his oncologist found inflamed lymph nodes during a routine checkup last week and a biopsy showed “that my testicular cancer has unexpectedly spread, and I will begin a regimen of chemotherapy in the very near future.”
  • NASA finds missing spacecraft orbiting around the moon

    New York Post ^ | March 10, 2017 | Margi Murphy,
NASA has discovered a spaceship that disappeared eight years ago. The space agency spotted an Indian craft orbiting the moon using its massive STEREO-B radar dish. Space is home to plenty of man-made cosmic junk that has broken off during missions and been left to float through the vast abyss. NASA uses its special lunar observer to spot strays and to monitor current missions. It was celebrating after tracking down its own, still-active wayward Lunar Reconnaissance Orbit, which launched in 2009. But finding the discovery of the tiny, 5-foot Indian orbiter, which lost contact in August 2009, is an incredible...

WASHINGTON — Forty years ago this week, armed terrorists stormed three D.C. buildings and took nearly 150 people hostage. To commemorate the anniversary of the three-day Hanafi siege, a photo exhibit is currently on display at the Wilson Building. Many of those photos are from the Washington Star archive, and some were never published. WTOP put together a video (above) that includes these photos. Although the siege has largely been forgotten, a former WTOP newsman remembers it well. Jim Bohannon, now a syndicated radio talk show host, was anchoring on WTOP on March 9, 1977, when word came in of trouble...

President Trump's administration is privately supporting an earlier rollback of ObamaCare's Medicaid expansion than what is outlined in GOP leadership's healthcare plan, CNN reported Thursday. A senior House conservative aide and two senior administration officials told the news source that the White House, while publicly supporting the House GOP bill, is privately backing a call from conservatives to reverse the expansion before the bill's 2020 phase-out date. According to the report, the administration is already urging several House Republican leaders to change the legislation for an earlier rollback.

The New York Times has changed the headline of a story to remove the word “wiretapped” from its reporting on data being used by the federal government to investigate aides to President Donald Trump, from just before he was inaugurated. The stunning move comes as Trump has openly charged he believes his communications were wiretapped by the federal government during that time period, and longtime federal employees as well as Democrat opponents and critics ridiculed the statement. The text of the story, for which the headline was changed from “Wiretapped data used in inquiry of Trump aides” to “Intercepted Russian...

  • Boy finds WWII plane with pilot's remains in cockpit

(CNN) - A 14-year-old Danish boy doing research for a history class found the wreckage of a German World War II plane with the remains of the pilot in the cockpit. Daniel Kristiansen and his father, Klaus, discovered what's believed to be a Messerschmitt fighter plane buried in a field on their farm near Birkelse in northern Denmark. "We went out to the field with a metal detector," Klaus Kristiansen told CNN. "I hoped we might find some old plates or something for Daniel to show in school." Instead, they found bits of plane debris. So they borrowed an excavator...

A McClellanville family has a new home thanks to stranger. Brian Smyth was so pleased with his Chick-fil-A experience a year and a half ago due to Shakeel Williams, he befriended him. “He has this sort of natural humanity that just shines through in everything he does,” said Smyth. Smyth got to know Williams and his family. The title agency president started helping to pay for Williams’ medical bills stemming from sickle cell anemia and its complications. Smyth decided he needed to do something bigger for “Shack” as Williams is called by those close to him after driving him home...

In the never-ending quest to improve computing technology, IBM has just taken a big step smaller: It's found a way to store data on a single atom. A hard drive today takes about 100,000 atoms to store a single bit of data -- a 1 or 0. The IBM Research results announced Wednesday show how much more densely it might someday be possible to cram information. How much more densely? Today, you can fit your personal music library into a storage device the size of a penny. With IBM's technique, you could fit Apple's entire music catalog of 26 million...
