San Francisco is seeking $1.2 million from the Los Angeles Dodgers in federal Bankruptcy Court to recoup unpaid medical costs for Bryan Stow, a Giants fan who was severely beaten by rival fans in the Dodger Stadium parking lot. The city's effort - spelled out in recent court filings - follows the Stow family's lawsuit against the Dodgers in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claiming that lax security and other problems contributed to the March 2011 attack after an Opening Day game. San Francisco has identified the Dodgers as potentially liable for Stow's bills, and is setting itself up as...
  • Thanksgiving 2022 (or sooner)

I just received the following E-mail and thought my fellow freepers would enjoy it: Thanksgiving 2022(Who knows—perhaps sooner than that!) "Winston, come into the dining room, it's time to eat," Julia yelled to her husband. "In a minute, honey, it's a tie score," he answered. Actually Winston wasn't very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington . Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its "unseemly violence" and the "bad" example it sets for the rest of the world", Winston was far less of a football fan...

Eric Isbister, the C.E.O. of GenMet, a metal-fabricating manufacturer outside Milwaukee, told me that he would hire as many skilled workers as show up at his door. Last year, he received 1,051 applications and found only 25 people who were qualified. He hired all of them, but soon had to fire 15. Part of Isbister’s pickiness, he says, comes from an avoidance of workers with experience in a “union-type job.” Isbister, after all, doesn’t abide by strict work rules and $30-an-hour salaries. At GenMet, the starting pay is $10 an hour. Those with an associate degree can make $15, which...
  • Dallas' JR Ewing actor Larry Hagman 'took cash from Romanian communists'

Hagman, who died last week aged 81, reportedly visited Bucharest in the 1980s together with his wife Maj Axelsson. At the time, he was famous worldwide for his role as merciless oil magnate JR Ewing on television series Dallas. However, during the trip, he gained an unexpected fan. Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who was later executed in the 1989 Christmas uprising, wanted a portrait of the actor to be put up publicity, believing it would bolster the regime. Dallas was one of the few American TV series the late communist dictator allowed to be shown on television, believing it portrayed...

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A San Antonio school district’s website was hacked over the weekend to protest its policy requiring students to wear microchip-embedded cards tracking their every move on campus. A teenager purportedly working with the hacker group Anonymous said in an online statement that he took the site down because the Northside school district “is stripping away the privacy of students in your school.”
  • Murdoch Says ‘YES’ to the Yankees: Why the Deal Could Help FOX Take On ESPN

...News Corp., the giant media conglomerate run by billionaire mogul Rupert Murdoch, has made sports a key component of the company’s portfolio. But this deal, which values YES at a whopping $3 billion, takes the company’s sports position to a new level, for three reasons. First, News Corp., which also owns cable news leader Fox News Channel, Hollywood stalwart 20th Century Fox, and 20 regional sports networks, gains a nearly 50% stake in YES, the country’s most valuable regional sports network. Second, the deal puts the media giant firmly in bed (so to speak) with the New York Yankees, arguably...

ARMS and explosives search dog Treo has saved countless lives in Afghanistan. His handler David Heyhoe tells his story. SETTING off into the dawn sunlight, Treo and I are out front doing the lonely walk. We dog handlers say that emotions run up leash and down again. We had just lost our first soldier - killed by a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) - and Treo could sense that I wanted payback. Treo was hyper-alert and raring to go. It was a good thing. We'd been out for several days now and the Taliban would know the paths we'd use...

A suit filed Monday against the Maine Township High School District claims three Maine West freshman students were sexually assaulted during a soccer team hazing ritual at the school. The suit goes into details of the hazing that have not been released by either the Des Plaines Police Department or the school district, which have both conducted investigations. Since the Sept. 27 incident, police have charged six students as juveniles while a total of ten students have been disciplined, according to the district. Some of the ten students were barred from playing on the soccer team and one student told...
  • Fabrication Trick Offers Fivefold Leap in Hard-Disk Capacity

Current hard-drive designs are reaching their limit in data storage, but a new manufacturing technique could allow drive capacities to keep expanding. A technique that enables the nanopatterned layers that store data in hard disk drives to assemble themselves has been improved to better suit mass production, and could enable disks that store five times as much data as the largest available today. Using self-assembly instead of machines that print or etch out features has long been considered a potential solution to a looming barrier to expanding the capacity of hard-disk designs. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin...

What's in your bug out bag? My eldest calls them Good bags, Get out of Dodge. My second daughter (see home page) calls it her apocalypse crate, a rubber maid container filled with all the stuff she'll need, and has it in her car. It has all her old army stuff that couldn't be returned. For example, gas masks, mre's etc. Ours has the normal stuff, blankets, food, flashlights, water, clothes, fire, ammo, etc. It might be a good thread to have input, suggestions, what's good, what's frivolous.

Howie Carr thread for the week starting with his Sunday Boston Herald column, "Moonbats' Remorse". Excerpt: "as strange as it seems, a plurality of Obama voters probably have real jobs, some even in the Dreaded Private Sector. Man, are they in dire straits. Take the instructors at Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh. Their hours are being cut back so the college can get around Obamacare. All you teachers, hope you enjoy being adjunct professors, because you ain’t getting tenure anytime soon. Wonder who they all voted for on Nov. 6?"
