APPOMATTOX, VA. — On April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee strode onto the porch of a two-story brick home and stared out at a lawn filled with Union soldiers, his Confederate staff of two, and his horse Traveler. Still wearing full military dress, Lee raised his gloved hands and punched his left fist into his right palm. The sound of leather meeting leather echoed in the unsteady silence. Then, as Lee mounted Traveler, Major Gen. Ulysses S. Grant emerged from the house onto the porch. Now facing each other, Grant raised his hat, as did Lee. It wasn’t a...

A 10-year-old girl from Pennsylvania received a special shout-out from the New York Yankees after sharing her experience of bullying in a heartbreaking video. The video shows Cassidy Slater, of Scranton, holding up sheets of paper describing the hardship she faces at her elementary school every day from bullies. "There's 4 of them and only 1 of me," she wrote....{snip} Among the video's many viewers were the New York Yankees. Some members of the team responded to her with a video of their own, using the same format with pieces of paper. The video started with Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia...

Those who can remember a half century back will recall these words, spoken by Captain James Kirk of the starship Enterprise at the beginning of each episode of Star Trek: “Space—the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission—to explore strange new worlds—to seek out new life and new civilizations—to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Although the original series lasted only three years and 79 episodes, it spawned follow-on series and has become a cult classic. But this essay is not about classic science fiction, the starship Enterprise, or Captain Kirk. Yet...

You hit the fast food drive-through a couple times a week, and your grocery cart is regularly filled with cookies, packaged doughnuts, ice cream, chips (and dip). But you’re thin. You run—a lot—and you’re not gaining any weight, so all’s good, right? Well, not exactly. Put down the chocolate cupcake and hear us out. While runners do tend to be much healthier than the general population, with lower rates of diabetes and heart disease, that’s largely due to a healthy diet rather than running regularly, says Sara Mahoney, Ph.D., chair of the department of exercise science at Bellarmine University. In...

In September 2001, I bought the lot, covered in trees and so thick with brush you couldn’t walk through it. I cleared the land myself. We built the house in 2002, moving in on Labor Day. The columns on the front porch were my ex-wife’s excellent idea. My father died four days after we moved in and I never got to show it to him. My oldest daughter, age 11 when we moved here, entered adolescence and then womanhood in this home. I met her nervous first dates on that porch. When my youngest daughter was born, I carried...

Would America Vote for Oprah for President? The speculation centered on Winfrey’s possible presidential bid – while encouraging on its own – lacks a full assessment of all that Winfrey brings to the table. The experiences of black women, even those that are high-profile, are often constrained by how people view them. A lawyer is arguing that the San Jose Police Department in California isn’t liable for President Donald Trump’s supporters being attacked and assaulted because they were essentially asking for it. According to CourthouseNews.com, a Ninth Circuit panel appears to be leaning toward allowing Trump supporters to move forward with their negligence claims against San Jose for failing to protect them during a far-left riot at a Trump campaign rally in 2016. “There was an angry mob at the end of one exit while police said the other exits were blocked,” said Circuit Judge William Fletcher during the Monday hearing. “That...

From Natasha Bertrand, The Atlantic:

Save Cochise County Supervisors have an interesting decision to make on whether to allow recreational vehicles as residential structures under the zoning code. During a work session last week, county officials asked supervisors for direction on amending an ordinance governing the allowable circumstances that would permit people to live in their recreational vehicle as their primary residence. This is Pandora’s box for Cochise County. Recreational vehicles are exactly what their name states: mobile modes of transportation for recreation. Campgrounds are well-suited for these vehicles, usually providing temporary hookups for sewerage disposal, electricity and water. Some even offer cable television connections....

As small arts venues continue to struggle in New York, there’s a new reminder that not even big ones are immune to the same challenges. Times Square’s home for jazz, R&B and soul B.B. King Blues Club & Grill will have its final show on April 29 after an 18-year tenure on 42nd Street, owner Blue Note Entertainment Group announced on Tuesday. The company blamed escalating rent for the closure, and said it is looking to reopen B.B. King in a new Manhattan location. The closing comes just after owner Blue Note opened a new Times Square venue Sony Hall,...

HLN’s S.E. Cupp––who used to appear on Fox News––had some tough words for the network tonight over the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Sean Hannity. She reviewed the Fox News host’s “lawyer problem” over the revelation of his connection to Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and the lack-of-disclosure issue. “On this face, it seems obvious,” she said. “It’s a clear conflict of interest for Hannity to defend Cohen and his star client, the President of the United States, on his show regularly without revealing one of the reasons he might be doing so.” But the bigger issue here, Cupp argued, is about Fox...
