Maxine Waters just cranked the identity politics up to “max.” The Democratic California congresswoman delivered an emotional address in Selma, Ala. on Saturday, telling her audience that she will sponsor legislation to provide African Americans with “reparations” for slavery if Democrats take back the House in this year’s midterm elections. Waters also took aim at President Trump, criticizing his feud with Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. “This business about who’s the biggest, who’s the baddest, who’s got the biggest gun,” Waters said. “This president keeps edging that on. You know, he’s a bully. He has a bully mentality.” The 79-year-old lawmaker...

President Trump’s proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports horrify Republican leaders in Congress — but they could yet pay political dividends. Trump’s move, cast by the White House as an effort to protect American manufacturing, has significant appeal in the Rust Belt states that were pivotal to his shock 2016 election win. Some Democrats in the region worry that senior figures in their party, especially those whose bases are in affluent coastal cities, are underestimating the political potency of Trump’s announcement. “It worries me as a Democrat that the national Democrats don’t see that Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and...

The clerk at the intake desk was unfazed when Stevens said he had been wounded in Syria. She took his passport and told him to join the rest of the people in the waiting room. So he sat with his mom for 20 minutes, his right leg wrapped in a cast, a splint and bloody bandages. He was still wearing a red-and-white Christmas sock someone...

President Trump has once again surprised the national establishment. This week he announced his re-election campaign earlier than any president in history. Simultaneously, he announced Brad Parscale would be his campaign manager. Both these moves are a reminder of how intuitive and strategic Donald J. Trump is. These qualities are a big part of why he was elected to be our 45th president. Why are this week’s announcements so important? Because they express intent and demonstrate immediate implementation. First, President Trump is saying to any potential Republican challengers: “I will crush you.” The amount of money he will raise, the...

In the wake of this month’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla., Detroit Police Chief James Craig said he is open to the idea of some teachers being armed with guns in classrooms. “Certainly, there should be a very thorough vetting process,” ... “When I talk about vetting, I mean someone who is trained, someone who is responsible, the rigors associated with someone in a school environment. It could be an ex-military, ex-police officer; some of those folks are teachers, as an example.” Craig likened the vetting process to that of airlines following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, in that...

The Republican National Committee revealed Tuesday that it raised $12.4 million in January 2018 — up from $11.1 million in December 2017. Mitt’s back. The former governor of Massachusetts and occasional native son of Michigan has a new persona: Mr. Utah. Wholesome, efficient, industrious, faithful. “Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington,” he says in announcing his Senate campaign. Maybe.
