On Friday, shortly after President Donald Trump's announcement of air strikes against Syria, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow twice put on her tinfoil hat, alleging that there is a "perception that the president may have ordered these strikes in part because of scandal," and that Trump's decision "may have ... (been) inflected by the scandals surrounding him." Maddow even contended that this alleged perception of scandal-driven decision-making will "affect the impact and the effectiveness of these military strikes." Maddow's first speculation appeared shortly after Trump's announcement:Transcript RACHEL MADDOW: As we follow the news in these incredible days that we have been having recently...

Rachel Maddow sounded as if she was on the verge of tears last night after President Trump's address to the nation on Syria. She was not nervous about another potential war, per se, but because she feared that our allies might think that America was destroying deadly chemical weapons and trying to save lives simply to distract from President Trump's allegedly ongoing scandals. "Point of personal privilege here just for a second. You know it is, this is not personal. It's not just spectacle. It is not just political as we follow the news and these incredible days that we have...

A one-sided Wednesday report at CBS News tried to convince readers that University of Tennessee-Chattanooga student Brenna Spencer's "I don't take normal graduation photos" tweet picturing her with a firearm generated significant "backlash." To create a false impression, the network cited critical tweets from two users with a combined eight Twitter followers, ignoring far more significant support Spencer received, including two Second Amendment-supporting women with a combined 160,000 followers. CBS's unbylined April 11 story only headlined "backlash": Woman's gun-toting "graduation photo" sparks backlash online A University of Tennessee-Chattanooga senior's graduation photo has generated controversy on social media. In the photo,...

PANAMA CITY - President Donald Trump's company appealed directly to Panama's president to intervene in its fight over control of a luxury hotel, even invoking a treaty between the two countries, in what ethics experts say was a blatant mingling of Trump's business and government interests. That appeal in a letter last month from lawyers for the Trump Organization to Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela was apparently unsuccessful - an arbitrator declined to reinstate the Trump management team to the waterfront hotel in Panama City. But it provides hard proof of exactly the kind of conflict experts feared when Trump...

Our wintry spring has impinged on my work life. Hustling through one nor’easter after another, I’ve not attended to news as much as I usually do. In spite of my relative inattention, two news stories resonated. National Public Radio sounded a familiar drumbeat: “Police shoot unarmed black man, father of two, in his grandmother’s backyard.” I heard those words, all carefully selected, repeated several times throughout the day, with the shrill, persistent urgency of a tornado warning. Tornado warnings demand that you abandon what you are doing and move to a shelter. “Police kill unarmed black man” demands that...

The Denver Post is in open revolt against its owner. Angry and frustrated journalists at the 125-year-old newspaper took the extraordinary step this weekend of publicly blasting its New York-based hedge-fund owner and making the case for its own survival ... On Sunday afternoon, Jimmy Kimmel released a statement hoping to end his heated feud with Fox News host Sean Hannity. Their spat began when Hannity called Kimmel a “despicable disgrace” and an “ass clown” for mocking First Lady Melania Trump‘s accent last Monday night. Hannity then launched a Twitter battle, coining the nickname “Harvey Weinstein Jr.” by invoking numerous clips from Kimmel’s time on The Man Show that depict his not-so-flattering treatment of women as well as a clip of him donning blackface when impersonating pro...
