While leftist activists across the U.S. are clamoring for a higher hourly wage for low-skilled workers, opponents of such measures point out the potentially negative impact on employers, consumers and those looking for entry-level jobs. One Democratic mayor agrees implementing a proposed $15 minimum wage is not a prudent move at the moment. Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh recently vetoed legislation that would implement the wage increase within the city.

Reaction to Sunday's column on Baltimore's distressing loss in population ranged from genuine empathy to snarky glee. Some citizens took the opportunity to complain about city life: A woman in Roland Park said she has a rat problem and that her water has been brown for months. I told her to get on her landlord about the rats and her City Council rep about the water — and to call me if she can't get no satisfaction. It's a depressing development, the city losing some 6,700 residents during the 12 months that ended in July 2016. After years when the...

On March 16, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly pushed into a boys bathroom at Rockville High School in Maryland and raped by two other students during school hours. Police arrested two freshmen who recently arrived from Central America, 18-year-old Henry Sanchez and 17-year-old Jose Montano. Sanchez, a Guatemalan, has a pending "alien removal" case against him. Montano, from El Salvador, is a minor, so his immigration status was not released. The Washington Post reported, "The two took turns holding the girl down and sexually assaulting her as she cried out, fought back and repeatedly told them to stop, according to...

A Catoctin High School student faces felony charges for what investigators called a detailed plot to carry out a mass shooting at the school. Baltimore's Democratic Mayor Catherine Pugh has vetoed a bill that would have raised the city's minimum wage to $15 an hour. The unprecedented veto of a "Fight for 15" wage bill by a Democrat points to the growing evidence from other cities that the economic damage caused by a $15 an hour minimum isn't worth the job losses and economic slowdown that results from the increase. Daily Caller: The council meets April 3 and could overturn the Mayor’s veto with support from 12 of the 15 members. It is unlikely that the council will veto the Mayor’s decision, with the Baltimore Sun reporting that the...

    >Last night on his eponymous Fox News program, Tucker Carlson interviewed David Moyse, an attorney hired to defend 18 year-old Henry Sanchez-Milian, who is in this country illegally, against a charge of rape against a 14 year old girl in a bathroom at a Rockville, MD, high school. Moyse is one of those youngish (in his 30s) lawyers who gets himself on lists of up-and-comers, like this one, and is a name partner in a criminal defense firm. In going on TV to make the case for his client, Counselor Moyse found himself being cross-examined and saying something he soon...

A Maryland high school has been thrust into the national immigration debate after a 14-year-old student said she was raped in a bathroom there by two classmates, including one who authorities said came to the U.S. illegally from Central America.Protesters on both sides of the debate converged on a nearby elementary school Thursday during a visit by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. And the White House has weighed in, saying the president has made a crackdown on illegal immigration a priority "because of tragedies like this."The Montgomery County school system has been besieged by hundreds of racist and xenophobic calls....

In the wake of an alleged brutal rape at Rockville High School in Maryland by two illegal aliens last week, Montgomery County Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith is accusing parents of racism and xenophobia. He also claims threats are being made against students and schools. "While I know this tragic incident has become part of a national political debate, I want to remind community members that the lives of real students have been forever affected," Smith sent in an email Thursday morning. "While many have chosen to engage civilly in the conversation, far too many have crossed the line with racist,...

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan did not mince words when he discussed how he felt about the Rockville, Maryland rape case where a 14-year-old girl was raped by two classmates, one of whom is confirmed to be an illegal alien (i.e. illegal immigrant). The county school system in question, Montgomery County Public Schools, had issued a letter condemning the rape in which the school superintendent made a public statement on the tragedy. Nevertheless, Governor Hogan said that the school system is not cooperating fully with the governor's office and the state's education agency. Hogan said the following: "Why is an 18-year-old...

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte is blaming the Obama administration's "lax immigration policies" for the rape of a 14-year-old girl at a high school outside Washington last week. The Virginia Republican made the accusation in a letter to Homeland Security Sec. John Kelly on Wednesday. "Once again, we have an example of how the Obama administration's lax immigration enforcement policies resulted in a life being seriously harmed – in this case, the life of an innocent 14 year-old-girl who was simply attending school," Goodlatte wrote. "There is no doubt that such heinous crimes by illegal immigrants who were encountered by...

Maryland Democrats this week took a major step to becoming a "sanctuary state," drawing outrage from Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and concerns it would protect an 18-year-old illegal charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in a school bathroom last week. The Democratically-controlled House of Delegates voted 83-55 to OK the Maryland Law Enforcement and Trust Act. Generally, it would bar state and local law enforcement from helping federal immigration officials seeking illegals, including requests to detain inmates for deportation.
