Today is the 11th anniversary of the Nickel Mines Amish school shooting. Just like eleven years ago, it is Monday the 2nd of October. Just like eleven years ago--and sixteen years ago on the 11th of September--the northeastern United States is swathed in deep azure cloudless skies. And, just like eleven years ago, on the Catholic calendar it is the Feast of the Guardian Angels. Eleven years ago a milk hauler gone rogue backed his pickup truck the door of the one-room schoolhouse, heavily armed, and possessing implements for other crimes, intent on deflowering the innocent schoolgirls within. As police...

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, an elected official who plans to face voters again next year, has been letting out more interesting tidbits on the investigation into Stephen Paddock than others who have appeared at the press conferences. Yesterday, he mentioned that Paddock had a “secret life†and “that it was only logical to ‘make the assumption’ that Stephen Paddock had ‘some help at some point’ in pulling off Sunday's massacre.†This would seem to open the door to some sort of connection to an international terror group, but if so, evidently there is no evidence on hand, because...

Authorities said one woman was killed and seven others were wounded after a 26-year-old African-American man wearing a ski mask opened fire at a Tennessee church Sunday. The gunman, who officials said shot himself and was taken to a hospital, opened fire in Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, southeast of Nashville, just after 11 a.m. and fired “multiple rounds,” police said in a news conference. The Nashville Fire Department called the incident “a mass casualty situation.” A church usher confronted the gunman at one point and was pistol-whipped, causing "significant injury around his head." He told police he...

High school shooting teams are increasing. They were common in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Increasing government and media hostility to private gun ownership caused a huge decrease in the teams from 1968 through 2000. Now the numbers are growing. A Wisconsin representative is suggesting that Wisconsin develop a high school class on gun handling and gun safety. A Wisconsin writer commented on the bill. From mediatrackers.org: State Representative Ken Skowronski (R-Franklin) introduced a bill Thursday that would have the Department of Public Instruction develop a firearm course for Wisconsin High school students. In an era of gun-free school...

Yet another shooting at yet another gun-free zone occurred today. At this moment 5 people were murdered and another 8 injured. The tragedy today at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is all the more disappointing because just this last year legislators tried to change Florida’s ban on concealed carry at airports to avoid today’s type of event. Florida Sen. Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby warned last year the legislation was needed because airport terminals “could become more of a target” for terrorists and criminals. Florida is one of on six states that ban people being able to carry guns at airports. While...

The shooting this week in a Lyman, South Carolina, nightclub will not receive the international publicity that the recent horrific Orlando nightclub murders have merited. This is understandable, considering the death toll in Orlando was 49, while no one was killed in the South Carolina shooting. But perhaps there should be greater media attention to what occurred in South Carolina, because a wider knowledge of that event might prevent a future Orlando-like massacre.According to deputies of the Spartanburg County sheriff’s department, 32-year-old Jody Ray Thompson pulled a gun just outside the Playoffz nightclub and fired several shots toward a crowd.Lt....
