Morgan Roof, the younger sister of the Charleston shooter Dylann Roof, was arrested after taking two weapons to school and posting to Snapchat that she hoped students protesting against gun violence in a nationwide walkout “get shot.” Roof, 18, showed up at A.C. Flora High School in South Carolina with a knife, pepper spray, and marijuana. She faces weapons and drugs charges. A judge released Roof on a $5,000 bond but ordered her to stay away from her school. Though she faced no charges relating to her Snapchat post, it did cause alarm, reported WIS-TV. In her post, Roof wrote:...

A 14-year-old New Orleans student on Saturday (March 10) became one of the latest to face charges after police say the student posted several threats against ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron Academy on Curran Boulevard. The school shooting threat, discovered Friday, forms one of more than 106 such threats made toward Louisiana schools since the Feb. 14 shooting that killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., according to the FBI's New Orleans Field Office and the Louisiana State Police. New Orleans area schools have been the targets of a number of threats in the...

The public must be allowed to see the security video from outside last month’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a judge ruled Monday. The South Florida Sun Sentinel, along with other media organizations, sued the Broward Sheriff’s Office last month for access to the video, arguing that it is critical for the public to analyze law enforcement’s response to the shooting.

When some major police incident occurs, it is most often my practice to withhold comment until I can be sure that most of the facts surrounding it have been revealed. A horrific event like a school shooting like that which occurred in Parkland, Fla., arouses the impulse to weigh in with opinions based on incomplete or even false information. It is best to resist this impulse. Others, of course, with endless hours of air time to fill, and with agendas to push along, are unable to resist it. There may be more egregious examples of this, but I don’t see...

Reaction to the latest school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead and many more wounded begins at the wrong end. It's not about passing more gun laws, which people intent on breaking existing laws will not obey; rather it is about heeding warning signs and doing something before it is too late. In the case of 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, who has been charged with premeditated murder, the signs were like a flashing red light. Former classmates offered a profile in danger to the media. They called Cruz, who had been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons,...

If we want to defeat or change those who are wickedly determined to take the lives of other human beings unjustly, it should go without saying that we must look far beyond the killers’ chosen instrument of death. This is why the pro-life community doesn’t put any effort into attempting to ban suction curettes or forceps—which have killed far more people in the U.S. than have guns. Nevertheless—and seemingly inevitably—whenever a mass murderer goes on a killing spree in the U.S., those who are terrified of the notion of absolute truth (who are determined to rule their own world)—and especially...
  • Here’s Why Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Never Reported Nikolas Cruz to the Police

    The Truth About Guns ^ | Feb 16 2018 | Luis Valdes
Nikolas Cruz was a known threat. Known by the administrators of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. It’s a clear case where a known dangerous student was not reported to the police. Why? Because back in 2013, the Broward County School Board adopted a program where they don’t relay information to police about troubled students. NPR reported in Fla. School District Trying To Curb School-To-Prison Pipeline; It’s a move away from so-called “zero tolerance” policies that require schools to refer even minor misdemeanors to the police. Critics call it a “school to prison pipeline.” Under a new program adopted by...

Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to “conduct an immediate review” of both the Justice Department and FBI Friday. Sessions referenced the new revelations into the FBI’s mishandling of tips on suspected Stoneman Douglass High School shooter Nikolas Cruz, which he called “tragic.” (RELATED: FBI Admits It Mishandled Tip On Florida Shooter) “It is now clear that the warning signs were there and tips to the FBI were missed,” Sessions wrote in a statement. “We see the tragic consequences of those failures.” “The FBI in conjunction with our state and local partners must act flawlessly to...

"Enough is enough!" "This can't go on!" "This has to stop!" These were among the comments that came through the blizzard of commentary after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County. We have heard these words before. Unfortunately, such atrocities are not going to stop. For the ingredients that produce such slaughters are present and abundant in American society. And what can stop a man full of hate, who has ceased to care about his life and is willing to end it, from getting a weapon in a country of 300 million guns and killing as...

Between 1982 and 2017, 92 of 95 mass shootings in the US were carried out by men, and only three involved a woman. After another mass shooting in a school, Americans are seeking to solve the problem of gun violence. Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of murder after a shooting at his old school, where he had been expelled for "disciplinary reasons". Of 95 mass shootings carried out in the US between 1982 and 2017, 92 of the perpetrators were male. The final three are made up of two women, and one case of one man and...

I am increasingly suspicious -- almost convinced -- that these spree-shootings are orchestrated. Let us consider: Only days after Boehner resigns (but stays around through October, able to defy his base) TWO mass shooting events occur within hours of one another: The college in Oregon, and a lesser-publicized Inglis, Florida mass-shooting. If Obama seemed angry, I suspect it was because the second shooting was so small. Note how the two shootings make a perfect diagonal across the country, symbolically book-ending us with violence. It's really hard to be the point-man in this controversial subject -- that the mentally-ill and medicated can...

Opponents of an armed population often claim that semi-automatic rifles are a new phenomena in the United States. That is false. One of the first successful semi-automatic or self loading rifles was the Remington Model 8 above. It was patented in 1900 by John Moses Browning.Commercial production started in 1906. It was a successful design, used in the hunting fields, in law enforcement, and had limited usage in the U.S. military. The model 8 was modified a bit in 1936 and become the model 81, which was produced until 1950. You can see that some of the design features...

CORNING, Calif. - Witnesses tell a chilling account of two gunman who opened fire at Rancho Tehama Elementary School near Corning Tuesday morning. Coy Ferreira, whose daughter is a kindergarten student, was dropping his daughter off for class just before 8 a.m. when he heard what sounded like a firecracker. A school secretary ran out and yelled for the kids to get in the classrooms because someone was shooting at the school. Ferreira said he ran into a classroom with 14 students. He said the series of shots came through the classroom windows, hitting one student. Ferreria said a young...

Feeling helpless hearing the news of yet another mass shooting, this time in a church in a small town in Texas. Name wasn't Islamic, so my guess is either a plain old fashioned lunatic, or a snowflake in meltdown. Which ever. This is all I can do about it, start a memorial song thread for people to contribute to. Theme is Texas, cowboys, oil wells, whatever Texas means to you, or Baptist hymns, if that's what you want. Songs are best, but poems, anecdotes, whatever moves you. I grabbed one of the best again, with the song Giant.
