Europe’s leaders are about to consign the Earth to the risk of dangerous climate change, a UN expert says. Prof Jim Skea, a vice-chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, says the EU’s plan to cut CO2 emissions 40% by 2030 is too weak. President Barack Obama's push to raise the minimum wage, which has largely found success in liberal-leaning coastal states to date, could make headway in the conservative heartland in the November elections. Voters in the Republican-controlled states of Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Dakota will consider ballot initiatives in November that would raise the minimum wage above the national rate of $7.25 per hour. Activists on both sides of the issue say the proposals stand a good chance of passing.

The White House is using the six-year anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy filing to look back at how the Obama administration fought the financial crisis – and look ahead to what it calls unfinished business like raising the minimum wage. In a blog post on Monday morning, National Economic Council Director Jeffrey Zients goes back through the creation of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the administration’s bailout of U.S. automakers and the enactment of the Dodd-Frank Act. Zients says the U.S. has made “significant progress toward a safer and sounder financial system” since the crisis.

One of the fundamental problems in our society is that we argue with one another from positions of moral parochialism: we assume that the other party shares our frames of reference. That may have been true in the earlier years of our nation, but I propose that this is no longer the case. Today, we argue from different and fundamentally incompatible moral codes and value systems. It is the dichotomy between the two that confuses our discourse and creates great dangers for our country.
