It hasn't been a particularly great year for magazine circulation, but one category is shining as a beacon of hope for the American publishing industry: guns. American Rifleman and America’s 1st Freedom, both of which are benefits of NRA membership, saw their circulations increase 14 percent to 1.9 million and 8 percent to 545,019, respectively, in the first half of the year versus the year-ago period. Handguns and Guns & Ammo, published by InterMedia Outdoors, saw their circ jump 16 percent to 137,648 and 7 percent to 416,224, respectively.

Looking at the pics coming in from the Boston bomber manhunt I see all these LEOs bristling with high-capacity-mag, “assault weapon” looking rifles (wonder how many are full-auto?), bad-ass shotguns, scary black pistols. I seem to remember an older federal court ruling that addressed the number of rounds a weapon's detachable magazine could hold. IIRC it said something to the effect that a 12-round magazine was not materially different from an 8 or 10 round magazine, and therefore the capacity of a detachable magazine could not be regulated. As I read the ñew New York gun laws like the police there is no exemption for the entertainment industry (movies, TV, or plaifys). Even if the guns themselves were non working props I'll bet the magazines are real. That alone would bear crime. They aren't going to have just one magazine either. According to the gun review site, "Haus of Guns," backorders for the Magpul AR-15 30-round magazine ("PMAG") have surpassed one million. In a Facebook post dated today, January 9, Haus of Guns writes the following: "Had breakfast with a buddy who has reasonably close ties to the Magpul family. Word is the great PMAG panic backorder of 2012/13 has topped 1 million at Magpul HQ." Magpul is a designer and manufacturer of firearms accessories. The PMAG is one of their most popular products.
