N.J. Democrats propose limiting capacity of gun magazines

TRENTON New Jersey Democrats on Monday proposed legislation that would limit the ammunition capacity of gun magazines, 14 months after a massacre at a Connecticut elementary school revived a national debate about the role of guns in America.

The bill, announced by the Legislature's Democratic leadership at a Statehouse news conference with parents of children slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, would reduce magazine capacity to 10 rounds, from 15.

It also would ban semiautomatic rifles with fixed-magazine capacities that exceed 10 rounds.

"When you meet families that lost their loved ones, it's pretty hard to explain why you can't do a simple thing like this to make lives a little bit easier," said Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D., Gloucester).

The Assembly passed the same bill last year, but Sweeney refused to bring it up for a vote in the Senate. On Monday, he said he changed his position after speaking with people like the Sandy Hook parents. "And, honestly, I'm proud I did," he said.

"To lawful gun owners - who I have great deal of respect for - we're not hurting one of them," said Sweeney, who grew emotional at the news conference. "For sportsmen, we're not hurting one. And if it prevents one child or one person from losing their life, we should do it."

The proposal comes even as gun-control legislation stalled in Washington last year despite a high-profile push by President Obama to renew an assault-weapons ban and mandate background checks for all gun sales.

Gun-rights groups have pledged to fight New Jersey's measure, calling it a failed policy and an infringement on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

"This legislation represents the largest gun ban and..."

Wonder why they didn't have the widow of the husband who was slain at that Mall shooting?

Oh, that would collapse their narrative.

Who knows how dastardly is the magazine limitation.

And, if it prevents law abiding people from fully defending themselves against law breaking and murdering drug gangs or terrorists?

Forget magazines -- I say we number the pages allowed in a book. I think all book purchases should be registered, and subject to a $200 tax. You'll need a permit before you're allowed to actually buy a book -- and don't forget the waiting period before you can actually start to read.

Start with the "basic, common sense" restrictions on the First Amendment. Then move on to the Second Amendment.

I’ll bet the 6 Sandy Hook staff who tried to protect their students with their bodies, would prefer to have had a gun.

I remember a story about a year back out of Detroit where some old girl fired 11 rounds at some punk who tried to steal her purse.

She missed but she did get her purse back. Then she got back on the bus and berated the “men” who sat there as the punk grabbed her purse.

Who is paying these "parents" to travel the country and push for more gun control.

Great story, thanks for that, my FRiend.

Missed 11 shots? Not unbelievable. Handguns can be difficult to control (especially for those with little training or practice), and fight-or-flight magnifies the sighting instability.

Sandy Hoax successfully got draconian gun control through a couple of state legislatures.
The goons in charge of manipulating the public must have been sorely disappointed when they couldn’t get federal gun control passed.
