Authorities are investigating the events that led up to the ships crash into the bridge, causing the collapse. ... The FBI has opened up a criminal investigation into the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland after a boat crashed into it last month. ... The boat reportedly lost power briefly before veering one of the bridge's support, sending the bridge cascading into the water below. Six lives were lost. On Monday, federal agents boarded the crashed boat to conduct a search. Agents wore yellow and orange life jackets as they boarded the Dali, standing where it...

Two US-flagged container ships under the protection of the US Navy were forced to retreat from a passage of the Red Sea after coming under fire from Houthi terrorists on Wednesday. The US-flagged container ships Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake were supposed to enter the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and transit the Red Sea under the protection of the US Navy. The US Navy has done this once before. On January 10, a convoy of four US-flagged ships carrying military cargo passed through the Red Sea. It came under a complex attack of 18 suicide drones, two anti-ship cruise missiles, and...

Joe Biden's economy is a disaster, but that doesn't mean it can't get worse. A couple of little publicized commerce/transport events make new problems, specifically, shortages of consumer goods, all but certain. Start with what's going on around the Saudi Arabian peninsula, where Houthi rebel rocket and drone attacks on ten commercial ships has reached crisis levels, and major shipping lines, such as Maersk, have opted to go around the horn of Africa the way Magellan had to do, in order to deliver their cargo loads to Europe and beyond.According to the trade publication Insurance Journal:Shipping in the Red Sea...

Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) said it would pause all container shipments through the Red Sea until further notice. The theory: a cargo ship with a "dirty bomb" was just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The notion came to life during a live YouTube broadcast Wednesday evening. During the broadcast, conspiracy theorist George Webb initially claimed a "source" had told him that there was "a dirty bomb planned for a major city." Based on the information from the "source," Webb said he believed Memphis might be the target. The Coast Guard said in a further statement provided to CNN that the source of the threat had been detained by authorities for further questioning. The statement did not mention Webb's...

  • Maersk Warns China’s COVID Lockdowns Disrupt Supply Chains

Even though Shenzhen, China, allowed factories and public transport to restart Friday after six days of lockdowns to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, global supply chains have already been impacted. A.P. Møller – Maersk A/S, the world’s largest container shipping company by capacity, told clients China’s zero-tolerance approach against the virus has already produced new supply chain snarls and logistical delays. “While manufacturing also takes place in other parts of the country, these delays will still affect output, though not drastically,” Maersk said in a memo to clients obtained by Bloomberg. Maersk has activated contingency plans in China following the...

We previewed last week to readers that port congestion wasn’t just observed across US West Coast ports, such as Los Angeles/Long Beach, but also severe congestion was developing in southern China. At the time, we called it a “perfect storm” ahead of the peak shipping season. Now the world’s largest container line, Maersk, calls the port congestion at Yantian International Container Terminal, a deepwater port in Shenzhen, Guangdong, in southern China, a much more significant disruption to its operations than the shutdown of the Suez Canal in March. Ditlev Blicher, Maersk Asia Pacific Managing Director, was quoted by Seatrade Maritime,...

Danish shipping group Maersk Tankers on Thursday said it would cease its activities in Iran due to the US decision to leave a landmark nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions against Tehran. Maersk Tankers would honour customer agreements entered into before May 8th, but then wind them down by November 4th, "as required by the reimposed US sanctions," the company told AFP. The group said it "has been transporting cargoes for customers in and out of Iran on a limited basis," without providing precise figures for its activities.

Danish conglomerate A. P. Møller-Mærsk’s shipping arm, Maersk Line, has been issued with a summons by antitrust authorities in the US. Listening to domestic-extremist/right-wing-AM-radio, heard a news report about 2 guards being found dead on the Maersk Alabama in Seychelles. The report identified the guards as 'former Navy SEALs'. Tragic. If it's posted anywhere, I can't find it and it's not indexed in search engines yet. I can't say with certainty whether it was Bloomberg news or Fox News, as this station mixes it up and I didn't catch that.

Buried in the LA Times Entertainment section is some interesting news about the Maersk Alabama, the ship that was attacked by Somali pirates early in the Obama Presidency.  In the last paragraph of the article, it is casually mentioned that the ship was attacked three more times in the next two years!  From the LA Times: But while Phillips' story -- and by extension, "Captain Phillips" -- had a happy ending, the Maersk Alabama has not been so fortunate, facing further pirate assaults in recent years. The ship was attacked a second time in 2009, again in 2010 and...

Drugs were in the room where two former Navy SEALs were found dead aboard the Maersk Alabama, a ship that was the focus of a 2009 hijacking dramatized in the movie "Captain Phillips," a company spokesman said Thursday. Police from the African island nation of Seychelles have given no cause of death for Mark Daniel Kennedy, 43, and Jeffrey Keith Reynolds, 44. The Americans were security contractors who were found dead Tuesday in a cabin on the ship while berthed in Port Victoria in the Indian Ocean. Shipping group Maersk is bringing the world's largest ship into service this month - but the vessel's sheer size could mean beginning its working life under capacity. The company has taken delivery of the first of 10 massive "Triple E" container ships each measuring 1,312ft long and capable of holding more than 18,000 standard 20ft shipping containers. Capable of carrying 16pc more cargo than Maersk's largest vessel currently plying the oceans, the Triple E class was designed to cut costs through economies of scale. However, the new ship - named Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller - might not deliver those cost savings...

Asian Trade Demand Is So Strong That Maersk Is Pulling Off 'Unprecedented' Shipping Surcharges Vincent Fernando, CFA Jun. 23, 2010, 7:09 AM It's peak trade season, but Asian container trade demand is coming in far stronger than major carriers had expected. Hellenic Shipping News: Head of network and product Lars Reno Jakobsen said: “We are experiencing a demand surge in most trades, which is a development...
