Years ago, I encountered a piece in Feminism & Nonviolence Studies entitled “Feminist, Prolife, and Atheist,” by Kathryn Reed. At the time, I had no idea that atheism was in my future. What really stuck with me was not the title, or even the body of the article, but one of the subheadings: “Converting Abortion Clinics To Peacetime Use.” The idea of “peacetime use” has been on my mind a lot lately, as the pro-life movement has seen a record number of abortion businesses close in recent months. On a whim, I thought I’d put together a list showing how...

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - It's a partnership meant to keep drugs and the people who deal them off the streets. But now, the Lubbock County Sheriff says he doesn't want his office working with these federal agents. Our investigation has uncovered a letter written by Sheriff Kelly Rowe, terminating the county's relationship with the Drug Enforcement Agency. The issue stems from a massive drug bust which was executed on February 4th, 2013. The month-long investigation took law enforcement from Lubbock down to Odessa and up to Borger. "All in all, we ended up seizing two homes, obviously all of the...

He and his wife were watering the yard on Monday. When they came back outside to move the sprinkler, it was gone. A hole had formed in the middle of their lawn about three feet across and their sprinkler was at the bottom of a tunnel that had collapsed. They agree the structure was built after 1909 because railroad ties were used in the construction. That year is when the railroad first came to Lubbock from Plainview. Right now, the function of the structure is anyone's guess. "What it was used for, it would be nice to know, it really...

Police in Lubbock, Texas have released shocking video of a Saturday night car chase that resulted in an accident. An 18-month-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and stood up to run after the car. Minutes before, 17-year-old Kenny Shawn Jimenez and three other teens robbed 19-year-old Chelsea Betenbough in a parking lot. When Betenbough was approached by Jimenez she assumed it was a joke. He demanded she hand over her things, so she gave him the little cash she had. "Then he turned around and was like, 'No, give me your purse' and me not really thinking, I was...

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A local vet is under scrutiny once again after a new complaint has been filed. Kelley Floyd filed a complaint against Lubbock mobile veterinarian Dr. Penny Kelso due to her treatment of a Labrador retriever named Spooky. "Someone else might call her and lose a beloved pet," Floyd said. "That's what we're trying to prevent." Kelso has been reprimanded by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners five times. In 2008, Kelso had her license suspended for two years. This most recent case involved a house call that Dr. Kelso made to Patricia Mott's dog, Spooky....

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Strange glowing blue lights flying up and down, side to side and sporadically disappearing and reappearing in the night sky…this is what many south Lubbock residents say they've seen over the last few weeks. After taking several calls, emails and Facebook posts, KCBD decided to check it out and see what was behind these mystery lights. Keith Mowery was just one of many who spotted the blue lights about three weeks ago at his shop off of 87th and Avenue P. "My buddy called me and said you need to get outside right now," said Keith....

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Occupy Lubbock will be forced to leave next month due to City of Lubbock maintenance. Protesters have occupied the area on 19th Street and University for nearly six months. They started by holding signs on the corner of the street. Now they have several tents where they sleep and organize protests. They say they are protesting against the one percent of people that control the majority of our country's wealth. The group chose their location because it was city property, not a park. Therefore, they were allowed to stay under the condition they would not vandalize...

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Dallas based adult entertainment business with a club right here in Lubbock is getting sued by some current and former dancers. The dancers say they're hired as independent contractors rather than employees paid by the hour. Documents from the federal lawsuit show 8 dancers suing Jaguars. According to the lawsuit they worked in Lubbock, Abilene, Odessa, Dallas, and Fort Worth. We've been unable to determine how many dancers worked at the Lubbock location or if they're still employed. Texas Tech labor law professor Jarod Gonzalez explains the difference between an employee and an independent contractor....

One of the protestors, Andrew McMillan, confronted the men, who witnesses say threatened to beat him up if he came any closer. McMillan tried to get the truck's license plate as the men drove off. LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Two weeks ago we told you about oil and gas companies taking a growing interest in properties south of Lubbock. After our story aired, viewers came to us with questions about how the advanced drilling methods could affect the environment. Tuesday, we spoke with the chair of Texas Tech's Petroleum Engineering Department to get some answers. As we reported, geologists are looking for natural gas and oil in a large rock formation more than a mile below the surface. They'll inject a combination water, sand, and sometimes chemicals into the rock called shale. When it breaks,...

Wake up to the West Texas Organizing Strategy (WTOS) Businesses, institutions and politicians need to learn the difference between communities of interest and radical political groups masquerading as such.As was discussed on Pratt on Texas back in 2007, the West Texas Organizing Strategy is an official arm of the radical Chicago-based Industrial Areas Foundation. You’ll find them listed on the IAF’s website among a few dozen other hives of Saul Alinsky socialist groups around the nation. That Lubbock has one should be a concern to Liberty lovers. From the IAF website: “The current generation of IAF organizations began in the mid-1970's...
