Five cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections have been reported since July, with patients from Fairfield, Middlesex and New Haven counties between the ages of 49 and 85. Four were male and one female. Two patients had septicemia, an infection of the bloodstream, while three had serious wound infections. All five patients were hospitalized, and all five cases reported exposure to salt or brackish water during activities such as swimming, crabbing, and boating. All five patients had pre-existing wounds or sustained new wounds during these activities, which officials say led to the Vibrio infections. Vibrio vulnificus infection is an extremely rare...

Getting from point A to point B should, theoretically, be a relatively simple task. But in order to travel, the transportation infrastructure needs to be in place and up to par. Across the state, major projects are underway to repair and update that infrastructure so that New Yorkers can get where they need to go – whether that’s through the air, over land or over water. Though some may be on track to be completed while others wallow in planning, here are five major projects underway that should make it easier for New Yorkers to get around.Gov. Mario M. Cuomo...

Fairfield, Connecticut, doesn’t look like the Donald Trump country you’re used to seeing. The stately homes in Greenfield Hill, with its two-acre zoning requirement, and the charming waterfront in Southport, with sailboats docked in the calm waters of Long Island Sound don’t gibe with the raucous rallies thrown by the Republican frontrunner. But these wealthy Connecticut suburbs are as much hotbeds of Trump support as some coal-mining counties in Kentucky. Statewide, Trump won the April 26 primary with 58% of the vote, including all but three cities in Fairfield County, home to some of the richest communities in America and...

ASSOCIATED PRESS GROTON, Conn. (AP) -- A blob-like creature is invading Long Island Sound and posing a threat to its lobsters and other shellfish, University of Connecticut scientists say. The researchers say they have found colonies of invasive sea squirts, blob-shaped animals that reproduce easily, on the floor of the sound. They believe this variety of sea squirt, known as didemnum, arrived on the hulls of ships from Asia. They have no known predators. ''This thing has the potential for causing significant economic impact when it attaches to the floor of the Sound, where it blankets and suffocates shellfish and...

The immediate political battle is over: Cross Sound Cable Co. is about to bury a 24-mile-long power line beneath Long Island Sound between New Haven and Brookhaven, N.Y. Just don't expect the uproar over the project to disappear when the cable is placed under the seabed - a process that is expected to be completed by the end of the month. The Cross Sound Cable project, perhaps the most politically fractious issue in Connecticut this year, continues to roil state politics and focus attention on the often-esoteric world of energy transmission. This will be the first energy line to cross...
