The press conference began like many LIV Golf press conferences, with a moderator issuing an introduction. But this wasn’t any LIV presser — this was a Zoom call. Just a bunch of faces and names in little neat boxes. About one minute in, one of those boxes flipped from a blank screen to show the face of Jon Rahm, the No. 3 player in the world, wearing a black LIV Golf letterman jacke

The Senate Homeland Security Committee has launched an investigation into the surprise merger between the PGA Tour and its Saudi rival LIV Golf. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman on Monday requesting all records relating to the agreement, including communications between the two organizations. LIV has until June 26 to respond to the records request. Democrats in Congress have for years scrutinized Saudi Arabia for its human rights abuses, in particular its role in the civil war in Yemen. The kingdom has sought to rehabilitate its...

One truth we learned long ago about the people who run the exclusionary pursuits of professional and amateur golf is that they do not accept change unless they feel forced to. Whether it was staging tournaments at places that practiced racial discrimination, or playing the Masters at a world-famous club that didn’t allow female members, golf only surrendered in the way former Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson once swore his men’s-only retreat never would — at the point of a bayonet. So the PGA Tour capitulated Tuesday because it felt it had no choice, at least as it relates to...

Not only was LIV Golf’s first-ever TV broadcast a ratings disaster, it was blown out of the water by the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic — which featured arguably its worst field of golfers of the year. According to viewership numbers obtained by Sports Business Journal’s Josh Carpenter, LIV Golf Mayakoba — the controversial, Saudi-backed golf tour’s first event of the season — attracted 286,000 viewers on Saturday and 291,000 on Sunday during its maiden broadcasts on The CW. The PGA Tour, in broadcasts on NBC and the Golf Channel, outdrew LIV on each day — even the Thursday afternoon broadcast...

The 2023 LIV Golf season debuted this week, as LIV Mexico is the first event in a 14-event schedule. While several new players have defected from the PGA Tour join LIV's ranks, including Mito Pereira, Danny Lee, Thomas Pieters and Brendan Steele, LIV is sticking with one familiar formula from last year: the total prize money.

In June, the PGA Tour suspended golfers who joined the LIV Golf series, but the latter are allowed to play in the three U.S. majors outside of the PGA Championship — the U.S. Open, the Open Championship and the Masters — because those tournaments are not governed by the PGA Tour and have their own organizational and operating bodies. “Our focus is to honor the tradition of bringing together a preeminent field of golfers this coming April,” Fred Ridley, Chairperson of Augusta National Golf Club, said in a statement. “Therefore, as invitations are sent this week, we will invite those...

Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, hosted the third event run by the controversial, Saudi-backed LIV Golf series. If some state legislators have their way, however, it may never be back. Two state senators, Andrew Zwicker and Richard Codey, introduced a bill on Tuesday that would effectively ban LIV Golf events from taking place inside the Garden State’s borders.

Yep, no way The LIV tour is going to be more exciting than the PGA. Who wants to watch LIV Hall of famers and multiple major winners compete when you can watch this tournament with current leader John Huh (1 career win in 2012) fight off Sungjae Im (2 career wins) and Brian Stuard (1 career win). Who knows, maybe we will be on the edge of our seats seeing if Austin Smotherman can fight his way to his 2nd career top ten. With this kind of competition maybe Rickie Fowler can get a top 100 finish.

The PGA Tour-LIV Golf drama has entered its newest phase: litigation. Eleven players, including Phil Mickelson, filed an antitrust suit against the PGA Tour on Wednesday, alleging the Tour acted unlawfully by suspending LIV Golf players. Somewhere over the last few days — since back when he was telling friends that he was emphatically out on the LIV Golf series — Brooks Koepka found a metaphorical horse’s head in his bed, an offer he couldn’t refuse from the Saudi dismemberment enthusiasts behind the breakaway circuit. Since Koepka does not suffer fools gladly and has been vocally contemptuous of LIV Golf’s leading figures — Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson and Golf Saudi CEO Majed Al Sorour — we must assume the offer was sufficiently high for him to sleep soundly. For those who know Koepka well, one brief...

A full-scale battle has erupted between an upstart Saudi-funded golf series and the PGA Tour, potentially throwing the future business of golf into question. Why it matters: Major broadcast networks have invested over $6 billion for the rights to air PGA Tour events through 2030, with additional commitments coming from corporate sponsors for players, the tour and its individual events. But the newly formed LIV Golf series is luring top players with massive appearance fees and weekly purses, forcing the PGA Tour to fight to retain talent — and putting players, sponsors and fans in conflict given the Saudi kingdom's...

Even before it started, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series reshaped the careers of several high-profile players, costing golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson their relationships with the PGA Tour and some of their sponsors. A reprisal had been expected from the PGA Tour — and immediately after the inaugural LIV tournament teed off on Thursday, the PGA issued sanctions against 17 players who defected to the new series. The players "are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA TOUR tournament play, including the Presidents Cup," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a letter to...
