Several of the British government’s intelligence organizations – MI5, MI6, and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) – have banned white people from applying to prized internships, preferring to receive applications from ethnic minorities who grew up poor instead. The MI5 website states that to be eligible for either a 10- or 11-week scholarship at one of the organizations, “you’ll need to be in your penultimate or final year of university, from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background, and from a socially or economically disadvantaged background.” The organizations also claim that without diversity and inclusion they cannot undertake their main function...

IT IS INSUFFICIENT TO STATE the obvious of Donald Trump: that he is a white man who would not be president were it not for this fact. With one immediate exception, Trump’s predecessors made their way to high office through the passive power of whiteness—that bloody heirloom which cannot ensure mastery of all events but can conjure a tailwind for most of them. Land theft and human plunder cleared the grounds for Trump’s forefathers and barred others from it. Once upon the field, these men became soldiers, statesmen, and scholars; held court in Paris; presided at Princeton; advanced into the...

An Oregon official certified a ruling Thursday imposing a $135,000 fine against Christian bakers who refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. 7th May 2010 Dear Friends. The apparent tragedy of some five million Zimbabweans exiled from their own country may not be as great as it appears if those of us in exile are able to gain something from the experience. Providing one has an open mind, seeing how thing are done in another country can be a positive learning experience and something that will ultimately benefit Zimbabwe when or if the exiles return to the motherland. Watching the electoral process in the UK over the last few weeks has certainly made me think about the nature of democracy and...

Don't cry tomorrow.Saturday 1st May 2010 Dear Family and Friends, A tragic event involving a 15 year old schoolboy and a fatal stabbing in a church, has sent shivers down my spine. It should be ringing alarm bells both in and outside Zimbabwe because this, more than any diplomatically worded political speech, demonstrates just how tired Zimbabweans are of waiting for accountability and justice. The news came in a transcript from a Voice of the People Radio report. A 15 year old schoolboy was attending a service in the Zion Christian Church in Village 2 near Neshuro Growth Point in...

Once upon a time, there were people who loved the earth; they saw that it is beautiful and bountiful and just right for us. They saw too that while we grew numerous on its bounty (and our own hard work) a bunch of us were carelessly trashing it. They organized to be heard, pointing to the truth known to life from ants up: trashing your own nest is a bad practice. They told us not to throw junk from car windows and to repair and replant the land after strip-mining. They said: “Don’t dump chemicals into the streams; don’t clear...

ZiziSaturday 24th April 2010 Dear Family and Friends,Saying goodbye to an old man this week was really sad. Joe is one of the forgotten generation, one of hundreds of thousands quietly slipping away in front of our eyes. Not cared for by Mr Mugabe's government and ignored by Mr Tsvangirai's party, Joe is 4 years older than our country's President but there is no dignity in his old age. There is no free or subsidized medical care for Joe, no rent assistance or food stamps, not even a bus pass for the elderly men and women who have made it...

Dig your own graveSaturday 17th April 2010 Dear Family and Friends,Three months before Zimbabwe's 30th anniversary of Independence I happened to get lost in the vast urban sprawl that characterises the outskirts of the capital city, Harare. A huge shanty town lay on both sides of the road and stretched as far as the eye could see. Shacks and shelters made of tin and plastic were surrounded by mounds of rotting garbage which had even been scraped into contours in an attempt to demarcate little vegetable plots. Stinking streams of sewage ran right outside people's shacks and children ran...

GeneratorsSaturday 10th April 2010 Dear Family and Friends,When you ask people how they've survived this dreadful decade in Zimbabwe, almost everyone mentions the name Gideon Gono (Governor of the Reserve Bank.) People say they would have been able to salvage something if it hadn't been for Gono's incessant printing of money - and bragging about it; for his inability and unwillingness to control government spending; for his looting of foreign currency from private bank accounts, and for his removal of zeroes from the currency: 3 were taken off in 2006 and 10 in 2008. It's hard to understand how...

To learn or to teachSaturday 2nd April 2010 Dear Family and Friends,It has now been two years since the MDC won elections and were voted into power in Zimbabwe. There's not a lot to show for two years because every day and every week there's been another delay, excuse and stalling tactic to prevent real power being handed over to the MDC. To say that the MDC is in office but not in power is the most accurate description of our situation two years after elections. Because there wasn't a referendum to ask the people of Zimbabwe if they...

Out of sight is not out of mindSaturday 27th March 2010 Dear Family and Friends, The democratic space in Zimbabwe shrunk dramatically this week in a series of events reminiscent of our recent past. It's a familiar litany which instils fear, silences voices and closes doors that were just beginning to open: The Mayor of Marondera town together with a Ward councillor and two others were arrested after a rally at a football stadium. The Mayor was held overnight and released without charge. At the time of writing the others were still detained without charge. A 10 day photo...

Arizona must drop a plan to cut its Medicaid program’s generous eligibility and instead pay an additional $3.8 billion over the next three years under the federal health care overhaul, state officials reported Thursday. Arizona also stands to pay billions of dollars more in subsequent years than less generous other states would have to pay, even after increased federal funding starts in 2014, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System said in a report. Gov. Jan Brewer and the Republican-led Legislature included a rollback of AHCCCS eligibility to help balance the $8.5 billion budget for the next fiscal year....

View larger image HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Tuesday that the Bush administration has done nothing to defuse a "quiet riot" among blacks that threatens to erupt just as riots in Los Angeles did 15 years ago. The first-term Illinois senator said that with black people from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast still displaced 20 months after Hurricane Katrina, frustration and resentments are building explosively as they did before the 1992 riots. "This administration was colorblind in its incompetence," Obama said at a conference of black clergy, "but the poverty and the hopelessness was...
