Letters From Zimbabwe: Cathy Buckle

Don't cry tomorrow.

Saturday 1st May 2010

Dear Family and Friends,

A tragic event involving a 15 year old schoolboy and a fatal stabbing in a church, has sent shivers down my spine. It should be ringing alarm bells both in and outside Zimbabwe because this, more than any diplomatically worded political speech, demonstrates just how tired Zimbabweans are of waiting for accountability and justice.

The news came in a transcript from a Voice of the People Radio report. A 15 year old schoolboy was attending a service in the Zion Christian Church in Village 2 near Neshuro Growth Point in the Mwenezi District. At some point in the service Nhamo Machacha, described as a "well known Zanu PF terror master," and aide to the Zanu PF MP for Mwenezi East, interrupted the church proceedings. The teenage boy got up and stabbed Machacha twice in the stomach. Despite being rushed to Neshuro hospital, Machacha died from excessive bleeding.

In the radio transcript an eyewitness explained the history behind the behaviour of the 15 year old boy:
"That boy's father Lameck Muripo was killed by Zanu (PF) thugs in 2008. Their home was burnt and they were left homeless but the children were still young. However, up to now the culprits including the now deceased were walking free and this boy said he wanted to revenge,"

The 15 year old school boy was taken into Police custody and the Zanu PF MP for Mwenezi East, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, responded to the killing of his aide by saying:
""There is nothing to hide here. MDC is a party of violence, they need violence and they have provoked us today. How can I keep silent when they slapped us in the face like this? They have started it and they must not cry tomorrow." An amazing statement from a Member of Parliament.

For ten years the murderers, torturers and rapists spawned during a decade of violent elections have been walking amongst us. For ten years reports have been made to authorities but perpetrators have not been arrested, tried or convicted. Everyone knows who the perpetrators of the crimes are. There are witnesses, affidavits and documented reports and yet still nothing is done.

Writing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the murders of Prime Minister Tsvangirai's election agent Tichaona Chiminya and activist Talent Mabika, the MDC are also demanding that justice be done. The men named in those killings continue to walk free, one even still in state employment.

There are thousands of similar cases and thousands of victims still waiting for justice in cities, towns and remote rural villages. It is a ticking time bomb which apparently left a 15 year old schoolboy unable to wait a day longer. A time bomb which should have everyone shouting out for accountability, including MP's.

Until next time, thanks for reading,

love cathy.

Additional news from Zimbabwe on the conditions there, with forboding hints of a future for non-governmental media here:

"The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe chapter says
defamation laws "have the effect of not only silencing the media but also
silencing society which relies on the media to know and critique government
decisions".
"The police have been more than ready to act on political instructions
arresting journalists on criminal defamation charges," said MISA in a
document on criminal defamation.
Farai Nhende, a legal advisor at MISA Zimbabwe said, "The major hazard with
criminal defamation laws is that in cases pertaining to the publication of
allegations of corruption and other criminal acts they may simply be invoked
to put brakes on further investigations or publication."
Defamation criminalises the publication of statements that may cause harm to
an individual's name and good standing.
He said in most cases defamation laws force journalists to reveal their
sources, which "has a very chilling effect on investigative journalism and
amounts to an abuse of media freedom since the practice effectively turns
journalists into police informants".

Thank you once again for the ping.

It is said the hippo is the most dangerous animal. No. Animals like Magabe and Obama are the most dangerous animals.

Sorry hippos. You come in second.

One of the more ironic aspects to Zimbabwe was that the citizens of Rhodesia were one of the best things to happen to Africa. Unlike their southern counterparts, Rhodesians were, by and large, dedicated to improving the lives of the blacks (not really meant as an insult to South Africa — the situation there was just very different). Hired hands would be well educated, and encouraged to strike out on their own. And Rhodesians deeply loved their country. And, for that, they were thoroughly ... um, how do I say this, taken advantage of.

you are correct as far as her mistake, but one could infer you have never made a mistake you regretted, or never changed your mind. i have met such unforgiving people before.

she is doing the world a favor with such reporting. but there are those who prefer cnn

I have wondered why this thread continues to attract those who prefer to attack the messenger rather than to recognize the message that presages the possible future of the US.

I did not know she initially favored Mugabe. Evey thing I've read by her is strongly critical of his regime. Are you sure she once backed him?
I don't know why she STAYS.

That's how I've been reading this (a little bit for a long time, but MUCH more recently).

I also don’t know why she stays unless she is a masochist. I don’t know whether she actually supported Mugabe but she was among the “liberal” whites who wanted Ian Smith brought down and the country run by the black majority. Now she is living with the consequences. South Africa is also rapidly sinking into the same morass.

I think a theologian once claimed something to the effect: 'Hell is when a sinner gets just exactly what he thinks he wants.'

I have wondered why this thread continues to attract those who prefer to attack the messenger rather than to recognize the message that presages the possible future of the US.

Because she is wallowing in her own helplessness. It's a form of attention seeking, and it is not becoming.

It has been obvious for many years that there are only two rational routes to take if you are a White person in Zimbabwe. 1. Leave. 2. Organize a armed resistance.

I don't know if 2 is really possible. If not 1. should have been taken long ago. All else seems like liberalism at this point: "look at me, the victim, and how morally pure I am".

The article I would like to read from Cathy Buckle?

BEGIN COMUNIQUE: Esteemed comarades in arms, Today our brothers, composing a small elite band of White commandos known as Force Rhodesia have successfully completed an operation against Mugabe's troops and have succeeded in destroying a main army barracks at Wixom St. and killed a several hundred Mugabeites in the process. We salute the bravery and daring for Force Rhodesia and vow to continue operations until we have destroyed the tryrant and his forces and restored the rule of law and liberty to our nation. End comunique

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but non-vilence in the face of evil is evil itself. Such pacificism is not a true conservative value. Therefore I will continue to be irritated by her postings.
