The federal trial of a Kansas man for manufacturing and selling firearms and silencers without a federal license could very well turn out to be the pivotal case that not only challenges the constitutionality of the National Firearms Act of 1934, but also every federal firearms law ever passed in a battle that will determine whether it is the states or the federal government that has the constitutional right to pass gun laws.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has already laid out his plan for overhauling of the nation's immigration system, and it includes many of president-elect Donald Trump's most prominent — and controversial — campaign priorities, including reinstating an immigrant tracking system and questioning "high risk" immigrants about their views on Sharia law and jihad. The plan was laid out in a document Kobach, who's considered a potential pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security in Trump's administration, brought to his meeting with the president-elect this meeting — which was photographed by the Associated Press.

IRS data show the average income of taxpayers leaving Illinois surpassed the average income of taxpayers entering the state by $20,000 in 2014, a record loss for Illinois in the wake of the 2011 income-tax hike. Politicians enacted Illinois’ 2011 income-tax hike during a late-night legislative session in January 2011 and raised the state’s personal income-tax rate to 5 percent from 3 percent. This 67 percent income-tax hike lasted for four years, during which time Illinois experienced record wealth flight. IRS data reveal what happens when politicians choose short-term tax revenue gains over long-term stability. The short-term increase in tax...

Departing Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas tells reporters he is talking to President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team about joining the new administration, possibly as secretary of Agriculture. “It is a possibility,” Huelskamp says. The conservative has an PhD in agricultural legislation, but was booted off the House Agriculture Committee in 2013 after he spoke up against the reelection of Speaker John Boehner. “A lot of emails go back and forth–a lot of emails go back and forth,” he said. Pressed, the congressman said he was not sure if he would take a job if it was offered. “I don’t know,...

"Someone got into the car. I didn’t even look up to see because I just thought it was my fiancé getting back in and so I didn’t even lift my head up," May said. May said he hit the curb. She then looked up to see a man she’d never seen in her life. Courts documents say Kirui took the wheel and drove down 39th street. "I’m going to get you home. I’m going to get you home. That’s all he kept saying. I said you don't even know where my home is," she said. That’s when May began to...

One of the architects of several of the nation's most controversial immigration laws is set to join President-elect Donald Trump's immigration policy transition team. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Thursday that he planned to help Trump reverse President Obama's immigration policies. "There's going to be a lot to do there in part because Mr. Trump and Mr. Obama are diametric opposites when it comes to immigration policy, so there will be a lot of changes," Kobach told a Kansas television station. Noting Trump's central campaign pledge to build a southern border wall and emboldened by Republicans' retaining control...

The right to hunt is something early colonists took seriously.  In England, the right to hunt was limited to the the King and landowners.  Commoners did not have a right to hunt.  In the American colonies, hunting was important for survival.  Vermont included the right to hunt in its constitution in 1777.  The right to hunt was considered for the United States Constitution, but ultimately was not explicitly included.  It falls under the 10th Amendment.Nineteen states have the right to hunt in their state constitutions.  In the last 20 years, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota, Montana,...

A state judge on Friday struck down a Kansas voter registration system that would have prevented people from voting in state and local elections unless they show proof of U.S. citizenship. The judge ruled that the loss of voting rights for more than 18,000 Kansas residents “far outweighs” the risk posed by potential voter fraud, as the state mentioned only about two dozen people who may have attempted to improperly register to vote over the last 13 years. “The right of citizen suffrage forms the foundation of a democratic society,” Larry Hendricks, District Judge in Shawnee County wrote in a...

An ongoing CBS4 voter fraud investigation has uncovered a dozen cases where Coloradans are suspected of voting twice. Previous CBS4 Investigations revealed ballots cast in the names of Coloradans who had been dead for months– sometimes years- before votes were cast in their names. In six of the new cases, voting records show the same people voting twice in Colorado elections. In another six cases, people are suspected of voting in Colorado and another state during the same election cycle. Lincoln Wilson, a registered Republican from Hale, in Northeast Colorado, is accused of voting in both Colorado and Kansas in...

Despite news percolating throughout the country about non-citizens registering to vote under loose Motor-Voter practices, the courts are refusing to allow states to verify citizenship as a condition for registering to vote. Yesterday, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a district court’s injunction against a Kansas law requiring those registering with federal Motor-Voter forms to show proof of citizenship. The original injunction forced the state to register 20,000 individuals who failed to show proof of citizenship. Now, that number could rise to 50,000.

A dark age descends on America’s campuses, fostered and welcomed by the disciples of Gramsci that have seized control of the commanding heights of education and culture. In place of the sacred academic tradition of open inquiry, they have substituted a reign of virtue, at least as they define it, so that dissenting ideas not only need not be heard, they must be actively suppressed. The so-called Social Justice Warriors, intoxicated with their own sense of absolute righteousness, are enforcing the dogmas of revolutionary purity. Emily Zanotti of Heat Street descries what happened when the University of Kansas chapter of...

Emphasizing the need for congressional action, farm groups renewed their call for reform of Clean Water Act enforcement, following release of a report documenting how federal agencies overreach their authority to regulate farmland. The report, issued last week by the majority staff of the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, describes numerous incidents in which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Environmental Protection Agency have tried to expand their authority to regulate what crops farmers grow and how they grow them, based on the agencies' interpretation of the act.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Some people just can’t wait to talk politics — prompting a Kansas police department to ask people to stop misusing the 911 system. The tweet from their official account reads: We realize politics can make emotions run high, but being mad at a presidential candidate in a debate is NOT a reason to call 911.” It’s not yet clear how many residents chose to call 911 instead of tweeting or posting on Facebook, nor what those individuals hoped the police might do for them. In an apparent effort to head off emergency calls later this evening, Lawrence...

Kansas has more than 140,000 miles of public roads — the fourth most in the U.S. Such a massive network requires substantial public investment in maintenance and new projects, and some transportation advocates are worried that the state’s revenue crisis will prevent much of this necessary work from getting done. For example, the Brownback administration has transferred more than $1 billion from the Kansas Department of Transportation to the state general fund over the past few years. … Earlier this year, $185 million was removed from the highway fund to counteract meager state revenue collections. This sweep was announced alongside...
