Complaints have arisen over Rep. Jan Pauls’ residential switch to this former church at 101 E. 11th Ave. in order to stay in the 102nd congressional district. Validity of new Pauls home in question Walk-through planned to see if church meets requirements to be home. State Rep. Jan Pauls' candidacy is coming under fire because of her sudden switch in official residency from a home to a former church in order to run for re-election in the 102nd District. A formal objection has been lodged with the Secretary of State. Also, Hutchinson City Hall has received complaints, too, regarding the...

Douglas County prosecutors are still reviewing whether to file charges against a 22-year-old Kansas University student who was accused of possessing a gun inside his scholarship hall room in April. A Lawrence attorney says the case illustrates constitutional questions because a student’s campus dorm room is considered a student’s home, where the Supreme Court has ruled it’s a fundamental right for residents to possess firearms for protection under the Second Amendment. “It’s an area of the law that is newly developing because of Supreme Court cases,” said defense attorney Carl Folsom, who is not involved in the case. “It seems...

Louisiana House approves bill banning abortions after 20 weeksBy Kathy Finn Fri Jun 1, 2012 7:50pm EDT NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The Louisiana state House of Representatives on Friday unanimously approved a bill that would prohibit abortion beyond 20 weeks after fertilization unless the mother's life is in danger. Georgia a month ago became the seventh state to ban most or all abortions after 20 weeks. Alabama, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska and North Carolina also have such restrictions. Under the Louisiana measure, doctors who violate the 20-week provision could face up to two years in prison.

TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback on Tuesday signed into law massive tax cuts that he says will boost the economy and create jobs. “Today’s legislation will create tens of thousands of new jobs and help make Kansas the best place in America to start and grow a small business,” said Brownback, a conservative Republican who made tax cuts his top goal of the 2012 legislative session. “My faith is in the people of Kansas, not the government’s ability to tax and redistribute,” he said. Brownback’s action came under harsh criticism from Republicans, Democrats and advocates for schools and children. “This...

Only four days after former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline filed a blistering motion asking that two Kansas Supreme Court justices recuse themselves from deciding whether to suspend his law license, the Supremes announced yesterday that FIVE of the seven would be doing so. Their rationale, according to the The Topeka Capital-Journal: The five justices voluntarily stepped aside, citing the Kansas Code of Judicial Conduct rule that requires recusal when a judge “previously presided as a judge over the matter in another court.” Without ever mentioning Kline’s motion, the five stated it “would not be possible” for them to give...

A city in Kansas, divided over a proposed ordinance that would bar organizations, including churches, from discriminating against same-sex couples, has backers saying gays deserve the protection as critics warn against the government going too far. The Hutchinson City Council voted 3-2 to add sexual orientation to the city's anti-discrimination ordinance, which covers churches, as well as employers, restaurants and other local businesses. However, the measure was scaled back in an effort to win enough votes for passage. The revisions to the ordinance will only prohibit firings or evictions based on their sexual orientation, while a provision was cut that...

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas legislators restarted tax cut negotiations Tuesday, but senators quickly discovered they have less room than they'd hoped to bargain with House members as they try to modify aggressive income tax reductions that already have cleared the Legislature. Three senators and three House members discussed drafting an alternative proposal that would replace one approved last week. The previous cuts individual income tax rates and eliminates income taxes for 191,000 partnerships, sole proprietorships and other businesses. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who's pushed the GOP-controlled Legislature to lower income taxes, has encouraged lawmakers to keep negotiating.

Kansas lawmakers have passed legislation intended to prevent the state courts or agencies from using Islamic or other non-U.S. laws in making decisions, a measure critics have blasted as an embarrassment to the state. The legislation, which passed 33-3 in the state Senate on Friday and 120-0 previously in the House, is widely known in Kansas as the "Sharia bill," because the perceived goal of supporters is to keep Islamic code from being recognized in Kansas. The bill was sent to Republican Governor Sam Brownback, who has not indicated whether he will sign it. In interviews on Saturday, a supporter...

A bill designed to prevent Kansas courts or government agencies from making decisions based on Islamic or other foreign legal codes has cleared the state Legislature after a contentious debate about whether the measure upholds American values or appeals to prejudice against Muslims. The Senate approved the bill Friday on a 33-3 vote. The House had approved it, 120-0, earlier in the week. The measure goes next to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who hasn't said whether he'll sign or veto the measure. The measure doesn't specifically mention Shariah law, which broadly refers to codes within the Islamic legal system. Instead,...

Michael Schuttloffel. Topeka, Kan., Apr 25, 2012 / 04:04 am (CNA).- A proposed ordinance in Hutchinson, Kansas could force individuals and institutions – including Catholic churches – to host and participate in events that violate Church teachings on sexuality. “As far as individuals go, there doesn't seem to be any likelihood that there will be a protection or an exemption for them,” said Kansas Catholic Conference Executive Director Michael Schuttloffel, addressing a proposal to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation in the city of Hutchinson.“As far as religious institutions, that will depend entirely on what sort of exemption –...

Of all the many complaints about airport security and the TSA, one of the most common is that they make little distinction between plausible security threats and passengers unlikely to be doing anything wrong. And a recent incident in Wichita, Kansas has reinforced that argument, as a four-year-old girl was apparently subjected to a humiliating ordeal after she hugged her grandmother while she was waiting in line. The girl was accused of having a gun and declared a 'high security threat', while agents threatened to shut down the whole airport if she could not be calmed down. When asked about...

Coercing Churches? Parish the Thought! Hutchinson City, Kansas isn't exactly a hotbed of liberalism. But 40 miles from Wichita, this conservative town of 42,080 is the latest target in a nationwide campaign to steamroll our first freedoms. Back in November, a handful of Kansas Equality members filed a letter with the local city council, demanding that the town add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" as protected classes under the Human Relations Code. To some people, that sounded innocent enough -- until Hutchinson leaders explained what this could mean for everyone from the local cupcake shop to the Baptist church. Suddenly,...

Proposed Law Would Force Churches to Host Gay Weddings Apr 23, 2012 By Todd Starnes Religious liberty groups are blasting a proposed ordinance that would force churches in Hutchinson, Kan. to rent their facilities for gay weddings and gay parties. The Hutchinson City Council will consider adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the protected classes in the city’s human relations code. They are expected to vote on the changes next month. According to the Hutchinson Human Relations Commission, churches that rent out their buildings to the general public would not be allowed to discriminate “against a gay couple who...

Republicans embrace big-government health care Sebelius left behindLiberals are a curious breed. They actually believe the government can mandate you into prosperity. They wave a magic wand, and the universe bends to their whim. At the end of each day, they rest their weary heads blissfully - willfully - unaware of the damage they cause. Witness Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Before she was wielding the iron fist of power granted to her by Obamacare, she was the Kansas’ governor and, before that, the Kansas insurance commissioner. Health insurance mandates were her stock in trade, and with...
