HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Health Department reported 622 COVID infections on Friday, a startling count that is at least partly blamed on lab reporting delays earlier this week but also represents a continued surge in new coronavirus cases in the islands. “That’s the highest number we’ve ever seen,” said Gov. David Ige, speaking at a news conference on Friday afternoon. He added that even when you take the reporting lags into account, the daily average over the last three days is more than 300. Meanwhile, the seven-day average stands at 230. “That is an alarming number of cases. The...

As their company was swirling around the financial drain in the early 2000s, General Motors executives came up with an idea to counter its gas-guzzling image and point the way to transportation of the future: an electric car with a gas-engine backup that could travel anywhere. […] … On Tuesday, the last (Chevrolet) Volt was built with little ceremony at a Detroit factory that’s now slated to close. Sales averaged less than 20,000 per year, not enough to sustain the costly undertaking. The Volt wasn’t the first electric car, but it was the first to conquer anxiety over range at...

This year’s theme is “Women’s Wave,”...

“I was pretty upset about it,” she said. “I just decided I wanted to do something.” That something, she said, led to the creation of a support group, where people could get together and share and support one another, and for Cottle, two issues in particular stood out: reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. So she and others formed the group “Matriarchy Rising.” Not long after the group started, word about a proposed “Women’s March on Washington,” started by Maui resident Teresa Shook, began to spread across the country. As of Thursday evening, more than 170,000 people indicated on Facebook they...

A 34-year-old Kailua-Kona woman who was gripped in a struggle with a tiger shark off North Kohala feels fortunate to have escaped without deadly injury. That McKenzie Clark made it out of the encounter with a 12- to 15-foot tiger shark with injuries only to fingers and a hand is likely because of a companion wrestling the shark and beating it with his fist. Wargo grabbed the dorsal fin with both hands and the shark pulled him off the board. Wargo yelled for Clark to get on her board. “I got my right hand free and I started hitting it...

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, one of the most powerful supporters of the Occupy Wall Street movement, may be in the right place at the right time to protest with the Big Island branch of the movement, Occupy Hawaii Island. The former House Speaker is once again spending her holiday at the exotic and luxurious Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu in Kona on the island of Hawaii. The hotel web site says the resort is a tropical paradise with a spa, beachfront dining, fashion boutiques and a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. According to West Hawaii Today,...

I have been reading the letters back and forth about the military training, and would like to point out that our military is trying to be ready. To be ready we have to train. Our army was not ready, and lacked skilled leadership when the Civil War started, many of the good officers had gone to the other side, which was far from ready also, and the next years were spent blundering against each other until the strongest got ready learning from its many mistakes and finally overpowered the other side.

Abercrombie vows to fix system. West Hawaii pays a disproportionate percent of property taxes on Hawaii Island, and "we Democrats have to do something about it, and do something now," Gov. Neil Abercrombie told party supporters Saturday in Kailua-Kona. Some 116 people attended the Hawaii County Democratic Party's luncheon held at Hualalai Academy's Bridge Building. Abercrombie also covered topics ranging from energy and sustainability, affordable housing and the failed soda tax legislation. The governor noted that property owners on the west side Hawaii Island pay around 70 percent of all property taxes, even though far more people live on the...

I'm frustrated how far local political discourse has fallen into the toilet. The advent of the tea party is the prime culprit for causing this. These individuals believe they are armchair quarterbacks. This supposedly gives them the right to second-guess politicians and public servants' decisions. [snip] .Most TeaParty members are racists. This is why I won't ever associate with these individuals. I hate racists with a passion. So, I'm definately not a bigot... get the picture. [snip] By the way, you'll never see me at one of those TEA PARTY functions. I don't want to associate with racists. "
