Ground-breaking electric Chevrolet Volt runs out of juice
Associated Press ^ | February 22, 2019 | Tom Krisher

As their company was swirling around the financial drain in the early 2000s, General Motors executives came up with an idea to counter its gas-guzzling image and point the way to transportation of the future: an electric car with a gas-engine backup that could travel anywhere. […]

… On Tuesday, the last (Chevrolet) Volt was built with little ceremony at a Detroit factory that’s now slated to close. Sales averaged less than 20,000 per year, not enough to sustain the costly undertaking.

The Volt wasn’t the first electric car, but it was the first to conquer anxiety over range at a reasonable cost. GM’s limited-range EV1 came out in the 1990s, and Tesla put out its 200-plus-mile Roadster in 2008 for more than $100,000.

The Volt was among the first plug-in hybrids, many of which can go only 20 or so miles on electricity and haven’t gained much popularity among consumers. …

Like all socialist ideas... they fail - but then they weren’t true socialist idea then... because only socialist ideals succeed.

Yes, because everyone before was a “Revisionist” and not a true “Marxist-Leninist”.

Well if you have a Volt it is already powered by coal burning generation stations.
Then if you live in the “cool” states in the Northern Tier of states you can’t get to work and back. Good friend has to give a lift to work for the last four weeks to some poor idiot that bought a “Green Plan” car!

Just about all steam-powered cars were gasoline-fired, for the record. Some used heavier fuel oil, but always started up with gasoline because the heavier oil needed to be used in an already-hot engine to burn more efficiently.

Also, AFAICR, Rudolf Diesel designed (or tried to design) his engine to be able to burn pulverized coal as an alternative fuel.

While it was a financial loser, it did what was intended,” said retired GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who shepherded the Volt into production.

One suspects that Mister Lutz lies without worry about that pesky conscience thingy.

My questions are more focused regarding potential influence of Dem politics re the 'volt', but that's just me being suspicious.

Our 2017 Volt is on it’s last month of a 3 year lease. It has been a great car. Not one problem in 30,000 miles. Fun car to drive with the instant silent torque. Electric cars are the future. I just test drove a Chevy Bolt where you can drive in stop and go traffic with one pedal (not having to take your foot off the accelerator). In a few years most electric cars will have a 400 mile range with 30 minute charging. An electric 4WD pickup is coming out next year with a 400 mile range and O-60 in 3.5 seconds. Embrace the technology.

Very smart to lease the car rather than buy it - that way the batteries are GM's problem and not yours when they start to deteriorate. 30,000 miles in 3 years is pretty light driving - we typically put 20,000 or more miles per year on a vehicle. So this car may have worked for you, would not for many others. Also there are a lot of "somedays" and "in the futures" in your post. I believe that someday a breakthrough battery will be discovered that will make EV's a more practical option for more of us, but the tech isn't there yet. I'll stick with IC in the meantime.

Well, I usually think of cars such as this. This Doble Series E is one of many steam cars that Jay Leno owns. The device in front that looks like a radiator is actually a condenser, which turns the used steam back into water to get re-boiled to run through the cylinders again. The engine itself generates 1,000 lb/ft of torque.
