Mummified lion cubs in Siberian deep freeze by Phil Robinson Two extinct Eurasian cave lion cubs have been recovered from permafrost on the bank of the Uyandina River, Siberia. Flooding and landslides along the river’s banks in the summer of 2015 revealed an ice lens in which the cubs’ remains were spotted. They are thought to have been only a week or two old at death, as their baby teeth had not yet erupted. But they were the size of full-grown domestic cats.

On October 18th, 1963, the Centre national d’études in France was set to send a small cat named Félix into space. After lagging behind its Soviet and American competitors, France was eager to stake its claim in the space race—with cats, for some reason. But on launch day, the mischievous little beast went missing—and an accidental heroine stepped in to take his place. Her name was Félicette. From the streets of Paris, this tuxedo kitty—nicknamed “Astrocat”—would reach heights never achieved by feline kind. On October 24th, 1963, Félicette jetted 130 miles above Earth on a liquid-fueled French Véronique AG1 rocket,...

SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Reports claim addicts have begun hurting their pets to get ahold of a pain killer given to pets with arthritis. Veterinarians at The Animal Hospital in Slingerlands said they don’t carry the drug Tramadol in-house because they’re worried addicts will use it for themselves instead of their pets. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration declared Tramadol a controlled substance three years ago. Since then, the commonly used pain medication for pets with arthritis became available only as a prescription at pharmacies. “There’s unfortunately always the risk of abuse with any of these medications, and it’s a sad...

Multiple cat food companies have voluntarily recalled dozens of their products over concerns the pets could get sick from eating them. Certain cans of cat fold from 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty did not have the proper amount of thiamine, which is also known as Vitamin B1, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which announced the recall Tuesday. The products affected were all distributed for retail between Dec. 20 and Tuesday. A full list of the canned cat food recalled follows below:

Found this cat in backyard. It really is loving and all, overall. Does not really bit very much but does have very sharp feet. Will only eat food off of the stove though. But he is free. Not responsible once you pick up.

Beneath "pounds" of matted fur laid a cat an animal defense league rescued last week. The Animal Rescue League and Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh shared Facebook photos of a cat brought into their clinic on Dec. 15 after its elderly owner moved into a nursing home. In the shocking photos taken before the medical team began shaving off "pounds" of fur, the cat laid beneath piles of "severe matting" or "dreadlocks." The rescue team estimated the cat had been "neglected for years."

Yesterday, we got an email about this trailer, which is for an upcoming film called Kedi. The film, which takes its name from the Turkish word for cat, is a documentary about the myriad stray cats that live on the streets of Istanbul. Now, look, I will admit that I am the literal perfect audience for this film — I love cats and I love Istanbul — but even if you don’t fall into both (or either!) of those categories, Kedi may be of interest, because it looks like a gorgeous piece of work. Director Ceyda Torun mixes beautiful location...

I'm working on a cat-centric song, and I'd love to make the video for the song out of Freeper cat videos. If you're interested, here's the skinny: 1. Only video of your own cats, please - nothing from YouTube or the like unless you own it. 2. No money, but I'll credit your cats if you tell me their names. 3. There is no Rule 3. 4. If you want to submit a video, please post a link to it to this thread. I can't guarantee that all videos will be used. 5. When the final video is done, I'll...

An online movement of men is shrugging off the stereotype that 'cats are for girls' and flaunting their affinity for kitties, writes Hayley Gleeson. And they're giving others permission to embrace a gentler, more thoughtful kind of masculinity. Myles Loughran is a cat man. 'Cat man' as in, 'cat lady', but with a Y-chromosome. Put another way, Mr Loughran is a man who likes cats — as opposed to a man who likes dogs, say, or miniature pigs. "There's something about cats," the 29-year-old co-owner of Cat Cafe Melbourne tells ABC News. "I feel they can give you that real...

A dog in northern Germany is once again taking on the role of surrogate parent to a big cat, this time helping rear a pair of rejected Bengal tiger cubs. Leon, a six-year old pointer mix, is helping his owner, zoo keeper Jeannette Wurms, raise one-month old Peach and Pearl at home after the cubs were rejected by their mother at Safaripark Stukenbrock near the town of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock. “What’s exceptional about (Leon) is that he is a male with such motherly instincts which are very marked,” Wurms, who hand feeds the cubs, said on Monday. “He also acts as...

But, as one woman found out, scammers are trying to sell people fake hairless sphynx kittens by cruelly shaving regular kittens and pulling out their whiskers. JoAnna Dyck, from Alberta, Canada, bought what she thought was a sphynx online. She paid £560 for the cat, which was delivered to her home after the breeder refused to let her come and pick him up. ‘He was like a little tiny kitten, no more than eight weeks old, and he was naked. Completely hairless,’ she tells CBC. Vlad, as he was then named, ‘looked like a sphynx because he was very, very...
