Nine gay characters are depicted in network-TV series scheduled for the 2006–2007 season, a decrease from last year's 10, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said Monday. Out of 679 series lead or supporting characters on the six major broadcast networks in the new season, roughly 1.3 percent are gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to the group's annual study. The figure last year was 1.4 percent. GLAAD analyzed the 95 prime-time comedies and dramas announced by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CW and MyNetworkTV. While the year-to-year numbers are relatively consistent, the prominence of the roles has been diminished,...

At the APA Conference in New Orleans — where APA President Koocher commented about the ethicality of sexual reorientation therapy — Clinton Anderson, director of the APA Office of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns, offered further commentary.* Mr. Anderson said he does not dispute that some people leave homosexuality. "I don't think that anyone disagrees with the idea that people can change, because we know that straight people become gay and lesbian — so it seems totally reasonable that some gay and lesbian people would become straight. The issue is not whether sexual orientation changes...the issue is whether therapy changes...

Day 1996 photo that they believe indicates Karr was in Atlanta when the 6-year-old girl was killed in Colorado. Gary Harris, an attorney for Karr's father, Wexford Karr, said Tuesday that the photo is of John Mark Karr's three children, along with a newborn nephew. While John Mark Karr is not actually in the photo, family members "have no recollection of him missing a Christmas until the last five years," Harris said. "They know that if his children were there, he would have been there," the attorney said. "They would have remembered it if they all had shown up and...

ATLANTA, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The mother of a man who claims to have killed JonBenet Ramsey tried to kill him when he was very young, a friend of the family said in Georgia. George McCrary, who says he has known Wexford Karr, father of suspect John Karr, for 40 years, said the suspect's mother, Patricia Elaine Adcock, "made a big round donut (of kindling) and put him in the middle of it" when he was a baby, ABC News reported Tuesday. "She just boxed the little baby in and tried to light it," McCrary said, but John's older brother...

BOULDER, Colo. -- It was shocking when authorities arrested a suspect last week in the JonBenet Ramsey killing, but in some ways, it's more surprising that it didn't happen years ago. John Mark Karr, the 41-year-old schoolteacher who has said he was with JonBenet when she died in 1996, tangled with California authorities five years ago after telling an acquaintance that he broke into the Ramsey house the night of the slaying.

Inside the mind of John Mark Karr: Don't worry, I won't take you all the way inside my mind - I have to save something for my Barbara Walters interview! But I will tell you three things. I am the logical culmination - or at least predictable result - of three cultural trends visible during my 41 years on this Earth: First, baby-boomer hedonism. Second, rights-based legal proceduralism. And third, the media's enabling of what I regard as "authentic" behavior.

Physician tells of Karr's sex-change plan By Jeremy P. Meyer Denver Post Staff Writer Bangkok, Thailand - A doctor told The Denver Post today he was treating John Mark Karr with hair removal in advance of sex-change surgery. Also, today, an extradition hearing was scheduled for Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said. It was not known whether Karr, the suspect in the JonBenét Ramsey murder case, had retained a lawyer. Karr was arrested late Sunday at a Los Angeles airport on a warrant out of Boulder County, after he was escorted out of Bangkok. He's being...

Since the JonBenet Ramsey case burst back into the spotlight, much of the misinformation fed to the public has emerged again. Here's a little refresher course on what we know is real: The 93-page ruling by a U.S. district judge in a 2003 civil suit was the first real judicial analysis of evidence found at the scene. Judge Julie Carnes examined evidence gathered by police, pointed out shortcomings in the investigation and came to the conclusion that it was more likely that an intruder killed JonBenet than Patsy Ramsey. Here's the evidence we know: - An autopsy report noted injury...

Bangkok, Thailand - A doctor told The Denver Post today he was treating John Mark Karr with hair removal in advance of sex-change surgery. Dr. Setthakarn Attakonpan of Siam Swan Cosmetic Clinic in Bangkok said the suspect in the JonBenét Ramsey murder case first came to him March 9 for hair removal on his face, neck and cheeks. "The reason he wanted to do hair removal was because he wanted to do a sex change," Attakonpan told The Post. "He told me he was in the process of medical treatment for cutting off his testicles." Karr completed four treatments at...

Karr treatment seen as 'brilliant move' By ROBERT WELLER, Associated Press Writer Mon Aug 21, 12:44 AM ET DENVER - Authorities probably had a very good reason for allowing JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect John Mark Karr to live it up on the 15-hour flight to the United States, legal experts say — they wanted him to talk. Denver attorney Larry Pozner, past president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said the royal treatment during Sunday's journey — king prawns, champagne, French wine — was "a brilliant move." "What the cops want most is this guy to talk. They...

The story of John Mark Karr and his confession in the case of Jon Benet Ramsey is a strange one indeed. When I first heard the breathless bulletins surrounding the arrest in Thailand, I was reminded of two fictional accounts. One was an award-winning short story in an Alfred Hitchcock collection about a man who planned a murder a year in advance. All through that year he marched into the police station to confess to every murder reported in the press. After the cops had become inured to his serial false confessions he was able to commit the actual killing,...

Nearly a decade since her brutal murder in the basement of her parents’ home, the JonBenet Ramsey case was once again thrust into the public eye last week, when authorities arrested John M. Karr for the murder of the six-year-old girl. Since his arrest, Karr has confessed to the murder of Ramsey, although the validity of his confession is being questioned by those investigating the case due to inaccuracies in his testimony. Local handwriting expert Don Lehew, of Mt. Selman, has obtained several samples of John M. Karr’s handwriting, as well as, a copy of the Ramsey ransom note, and...

BOULDER, Colo. -- The most important evidence amounts to this: DNA taken from two blood stains, hair and fibers taken from the body, half a footprint and two partial palm prints. What it boils down to is this: It is infinitely easier to prove itinerant teacher John Mark Karr did not kill JonBenet Ramsey 10 years ago than it is to show beyond a shadow of a doubt that he garroted and beat the 6-year-old child he claims to have loved. Because of the nature of DNA testing, it is simpler to prove a negative. "DNA is the sure way...

ABOARD THAI AIRWAYS TO LOS ANGELES - John Mark Karr, the suspect in the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, sipped champagne and ate fried king prawns in business class Sunday after being put aboard a flight to Los Angeles to face charges in the United States. As Karr wined and dined in style and chatted with the three U.S. officials escorting him, another bombshell emerged: Reports that Karr sought treatment at a Thai sex-change clinic. His Thai Airways International flight took off about 8 p.m. (9 a.m. EDT) for the 15-hour flight to Los Angeles. Karr's journey will eventually end...

I've had enough. So I will just come right out and say what others in this business apparently will not: Mary Lacy, that's not your boy. John Mark Karr as much killed JonBenet Ramsey as Mickey Mouse did. This is a fool's errand you're on, and it won't end pretty. If you haven't noticed, the guy is a lunatic. OK, my upbringing tells me that it is a lousy thing to say about anyone. So let me put it this way: He is the saddest of all sad cases, a delusional, completely whacked out, early-teen-girl-marrying sociopath who writes bad poetry...

Before takeoff, Karr took a glass of champagne from a flight attendant and clinked glasses with Spray, who sipped orange juice. Dinner on board, served on a starched white tablecloth, was one many passengers would envy. Karr started with a pate, then had a green salad with walnut dressing. The main course was fried king prawn with steamed rice and broccoli. Karr drank a beer, crushing the can with his hands when it was empty, then moved on to a glass of French chardonnay with his main course.

Karr said he identified with Michael Jackson August 21, 2006 NEW YORK: In the series of emails that prompted police to arrest him, John Karr said he identified with Michael Jackson's attachment to children and, like the singer, compared himself with Peter Pan. "I am trapped in a world that does not understand," Karr wrote to a Colorado journalism professor during a four-year correspondence. "I can understand people like Michael Jackson and feel sympathy when he suffers as he has … I do think that he is sexually attracted to certain children but could never divulge this." His emails to...
