Some Central Iowa business owners are shaking their heads over hefty increases in their monthly electric bills, but MidAmerican Energy Co. officials say they're doing all they can to help their customers keep their bills as low as possible. Last year, MidAmerican Energy began phasing in a three-year increase in electricity rates for its Iowa customers, the second phase of which kicked in on Jan. 1 of this year. The rate case, which was approved by the Iowa Utilities Board a year ago, authorized MidAmerican to increase its electric rates by a total of $135.6 million, phased in through approximately...

An Iowa church just wants to be free to preach the gospel, but the state’s so-called nondiscrimination requirements could block the house of worship from doing just that. Lawyers for the church are asking a federal court to prevent Iowa from censoring what the religious group can say about homosexuality, same-sex “marriage,” transgenderism and other related topics. The case erupted when the state’s Civil Rights Commission first claimed the authority to control the content of sermons and then to define what’s religious. At issue is the state’s nondiscrimination requirements that specify any “public accommodation” can be ordered not to say...

BEST. FLOAT. EVER. Iowa parade goers treated to a depiction of Hillary Clinton in jail.IT GETS BETTER— The men were handing out WATER BALLOONS to throw at the caged Hillary! It was a typical summer celebration in small-town Iowa. The sun was shining on children carrying bags full of candy as the Arcadia Fire Department was celebrating its 100th anniversary on Saturday with a parade, a party in the park and a big water fight that would serve as the grand finale.

DES MOINES - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will make a stop in Des Moines on Friday. It's the first time he'll be hosting a rally in the city since losing to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the Iowa caucuses in February. Trump is advertising to his supporters to come to the rally and take a picture with him, but only if they knock doors for the campaign. The campaign says it's looking for "Bronze, Silver, and Gold door knockers" and the top three door knockers will have the opportunity to get a picture with Trump before Friday's rally. The...

Remember the Keystone XL Pipeline project? Remember what a cause célèbre it was for both the left and right? What the heck ever happened to it? Have you wondered that?Well, in short it was killed pretty much for good, or at least the foreseeable future – both here in the USSA and now in Canada. As you are no doubt aware, it was Obama who, with the left in the federal and various state legislatures – and with some help from Choo-choo Warren Buffet who owns most of the rail cars now hauling crude down south, vetoed the pipeline. And...

PHILADELPHIA — As Cory Booker left a room full of Iowa Democrats, shaking hands and snapping selfies as he went, a man approached him and declared, “I hope to work for you in 2024!” During this week’s Democratic National Convention, Booker has helped his already-rising political star among Democrats, including from first-in-the-nation voting Iowa. The U.S. senator from New Jersey gave a well-received address to the convention earlier this week. On Wednesday morning he was similarly well received when he spoke to Iowa Democrats. Booker burst on the national scene years ago, first as mayor of Newark and then in...

Trump now has 42 percent support across the 11 battleground states surveyed — up from the 40 percent he had last week before the convention. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has 41 percent support, unchanged from last week's poll. According to the poll, 55 percent of Republicans said Trump's message at the convention made them feel hopeful, and about 40 percent said it made them feel enthusiastic. Among independents, 32 percent...

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, landed in some hot water this week after he gave an interview to a local TV station in his Sioux City district office and viewers noticed that he kept a Confederate flag on his desk. (SNIP) And we’ve lived with respecting the South and their way of life for 150 years and now, after 150 years, there has to be an issue about a Confederate flag?” King told Angelo that he had ancestors who had fought and died in the Union Army. “Our family cares a lot about unity but also about the truth and accuracy...

Once you get over the fact that according to the pollsters Donald Trump loses in just about every category except head to head, in some polls it becomes instructive to look deeper at the over and under representation of various important groups within the surveyed sample. A new Monmouth poll makes this point. It says Trump is leading Hillary Clinton by 2 points in Iowa, a state that has not voted Republican since 1988. This is very good news for Trump and very bad news for Clinton. And although it is presented as “no big deal,” it not only is...

Other GOP elected officials may be avoiding the Republican National Convention later this month, but Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst sees an opening night speech as an opportunity “to give Iowans a voice on the national stage.” “Right now, Iowans are pretty darned frustrated — just like when I ran for election,” said Ernst, whose 2014 campaign caught fire with a “Make ’em Squeal” promise to cut federal spending. National security is to be her focus when she addresses the Cleveland convention on Monday, July 18. “There’s a real pushback against the failed policies we have right now,” Ernst said Tuesday....

West Long Branch, NJ - Donald Trump holds a nominal 2 point lead over Hillary Clinton in the battle for Iowa's electoral votes, according to the Monmouth University Poll. In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Chuck Grassley has a 10 point lead over Democratic challenger Patty Judge. This is a far cry from the 30+ point margins Grassley enjoyed in prior re-election bids, as more Iowa voters disapprove than approve of his decision not to hold hearings on Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee. Among Iowa voters likely to participate in November's presidential election, 44% currently support Trump and 42%...

In the aftermath of the mass shooting of a dozen police officers in Dallas this week, some conservatives rushed to lay blame for the incident at the feet of the Obama administration. Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh said on Twitter that "Obama's words & [Black Lives Matter]'s deeds have gotten cops killed." Rep. Roger Williams (R-Tex.) said, "the spread of misinformation and constant instigation by prominent leaders, including our president" contributed to the killings. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said the shooting had "roots" in the "anti-white/cop events illuminated by Obama." These statements are part of a broader narrative of a...

It seems tougher by the hour for Planned Parenthood to rationalize its long-held motto, “Care. No Matter What.” That steep task just got harder this week, amid revelations that a shuttered Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Iowa broke client confidentiality by leaving behind personal health information (PHI) records for over 2,500 of its former clients. In early May, a Dubuque office affiliated with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland completed the sale of its property to Clarity Clinic, a local pregnancy help organization, and left behind a closet full of patient files that took Planned Parenthood staff 10 days to come...
