WASHINGTON — Petitions and letters to members of Congress and the Obama administration are among the measures being pursued by advocates urging humane treatment of the Central American children who are trying to migrate to the United States. A petition delivered July 10th to members of Congress, President Obama and Jeh Johnson called for a humanitarian approach to the surge of migrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala that has overwhelmed the government’s capacity to handle them. Elsewhere, the California Catholic Conference and the U.S. Jesuit Conference and Jesuit Refugee Service weighed in on the topic. Signed by nearly 4,000...

The irony here is inescapable: At a time when Republicans are increasingly criticizing President Obama for bypassing Congress and taking unilateral action, that could be the best solution to the child immigrant crisis. The chief problem surrounding the migration of thousands of children from Central America is a 2008 law designed to fight child prostitution. Whereas undocumented children from Mexico or Canada can be immediately returned to their home countries, this law generally doesn't allow that option for children from other countries. Instead of a quick return, the children from Central America go into a legal and bureaucratic system that...

HOUSTON -- Even the people who represent undocumented children don’t know how long those children flooding the border may get to stay here. The law changes that led to this flood started small, well intended, ”But whenever there is a crack in the system people will try to bust it up and drive a truck through it,” said Gordon Quan, a 37 year immigration lawyer. It may seem like an instant crisis a system overwhelmed by the faces of kids alone trying to come to the United States, but it has been a crisis for more than a year and...

BRISTOW, Va. - Some of the thousands of children who have crossed the U.S. border, fleeing violence and extortion in Central America, are now being housed in Prince William County. Federal officials are making arrangements to house the children with private and religious organizations, but they are not saying where. Prince William County officials say they only found out about the children arriving there because the local shelter taking them in volunteered the information. "Health and Human Services did not inform the county. We're somewhat upset about that," said Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart. "I'm concerned...

Republicans have played defense on immigration for so long that they’ve forgotten how to play offense. The waves of aliens, the dead children washing up on the banks of the Rio Grande, the thousands of free airline tickets for reunions with stateside relatives — all of these things are happening because left-wing control of the levers of power has been met by Republican ineptitude. Shock and outrage at administration policies isn’t enough. The Republicans have provided no effective leadership in stopping the tsunami rolling north from Central America. But Republicans can control the issue, and the nation’s future, if they...
