New Bedford's undocumented youth face long road to citizenship

NEW BEDFORD – Adolfo De La Cruz' path to New Bedford was 110 days long. But if everything goes his way, it could be a year or two to go from “unaccompanied alien child” to U.S. visa holder.

The handful of immigration attorneys in New Bedford are up to their noses in cases of unaccompanied minors who came to the city from Central America and were released to guardians in New Bedford, according to local immigrant advocates.

Local immigration attorney Frederick Watt is hiring a full-time, Spanish-speaking interpreter. He estimated that he's come across 100 unaccompanied minor cases in his practice over the last three months.

"We see five or six new ones every week, and have been for a while," Watt said.

Watt said it's likely that many of the minors entering the country — as long as they can demonstrate neglect, abuse or abandonment by parents — will get this visa.

"They're relatively easy to get," he said. "I'm just judging from our own experience. We haven't failed to get one yet.

"Very few undocumented aliens are being deported, if (illegal entry) is their only crime. There's been a complete shutdown in deportations."

Well, clearly we are seeing these “youth” being scattered across the United States. Its not just a Texas problem. I wonder how many people who otherwise support Obama and Democrats will be angry with Obama’s scatter site re settlement.

New Bedford is a hellhole. There was a raid on one of the factories by the Bush administration. Oh, the crying and hand-wringing by Deval Patrick!

Even longer if they’re forced to go to the back of the line.

I’ll bet they get their citizenship before I get an upgrade in my V.A. disability. Any takers?

New Bedford is a *ellhole

Always has been. It's where Tsarnov the younger went to college....no problem for a terrorist to blend in. It's always had drug and violence issues and been third world, probably since the days of whaling.

The thought of these Central Americans coming into New Bedford in significant numbers I'd guess is something that could cause real problems with the toughened population already there.

They are deliberately dispersing them, like a metastatic cancer.

Is this immigration attorney working pro bono for his hundreds of cases??? If not, who is paying him?

Sickening what is happening to this country.

It’s a much shorter road to their embassy. Drop them at the gate and was our hands of them.

“New Bedford is a hellhole.”

Haha. You give it more credit than it is due.

“Sickening what is happening to this country.”

Sure is. But citizens share a larger responsibility in it becoming so. We have allowed ourselves to become over-indulged with the trappings of this world, hence forgetting what made us so great, and what our duties are, and how we conduct ourselves as Americans. It’s not hard to figure out how we got this way. How can a society possibly know what’s going on around them when they never take their eyes/ears off of their iPhone, TV, computer, movie, video game? Anyone can do anything because very few pay “attention”. Or “listen”.

And once God was argued out of our country, the downward spiral began. Blessings usually cease when this happens. And for good reason. We’ve forgotten that No other nation in this world has ever enjoyed the freedom & prosperity that America has. Nor has any other nation been blessed with the ability to reach out and help others the way we can, and do. If America ceases to exist as the greatest nation on earth, the rest of the world will cease to exist.

Democrats don’t care about this. All they want is for them to fraudulently vote for Democrats when ordered to.
