Two more very cold arctic blasts are going to hit Michigan this week. Conditions may be right late in the week for rapid ice making on the Great Lakes. This makes me think we could make a run at record ice cover on the Great Lakes by this coming weekend. As of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, the total Great Lakes ice cover was 84.4 percent. Record total ice cover on the Great Lakes is 94.7 percent, set in 1979.

Additional rounds of frigid air will continue to drill the eastern United States into the end of February, riding on the heels of bursts of record-breaking low temperatures. By way of Siberia, additional waves of cold air will continue to roll into the Eastern states. This cross-polar flow, as it is called, travels thousands of miles across the North Pole, over frozen tundra, seas of ice and/or snow cover. More than 4,700 square miles of ice formed over the Great Lakes in just one night on Tuesday. The Arctic blast that swept the Midwest and Northeast saw a near-record amount of Lake Ontario was iced over, with just 20 per cent of open water left. Overall 82 percent of the five water bodies sealed up. Temperatures are expected to drop again on Thursday night, leading forecasters to predict that figure to climb significantly by Friday morning.

According to NOAA's Great Lakes Surface Environment Analysis (GLSEA) the record for total Great Lakes ice coverage was set in 1979 with 94.7% coverage. Last year's winter almost broke that record with 92.2% and is currently sitting in second place. Just a few days ago the ice coverage sat at 60%. A winter storm could dump 3 to 7 inches of snow and sleet in the Tulsa area overnight into Monday, forecasters said. Tulsa and surrounding counties are under a winter storm warning from until noon Monday. "Travel will become very hazardous," the National Weather Service said. MCALLEN, Texas – Border Patrol agents arrested a Middle-Eastern man as he tried to sneak into Texas by illegally crossing the border. The man’s country of origin was not readily available. The Obama administration has ordered immigration agents to ask immigrants they encounter living in the country illegally whether they might qualify under President Barack Obama's plans to avoid deporting them, according to internal training materials obtained by The Associated Press. Apolinar Altamirano, 29, pleaded guilty in 2012 to a burglary charge but did not serve time in prison. U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement took Altamirano into custody on Jan. 3, 2013, after learning of his conviction in Maricopa County in Arizona. But after reviewing his case, ICE found he was eligible for bond, a spokeswoman said in a statement issued Monday.
