Excerpt:

The latest cold snap has almost all of Lake Erie covered by ice.

The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory says ice has formed across close to 94 percent of the lake. That's the highest percentage out of all of the Great Lakes.

Just two years ago at this time of the year, only about half of the lake had ice cover.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group in Cleveland reports that the lake reached 100 percent ice coverage only three times since records have been kept.

The most recent time was in 1996.

Cold, cold, cold.

Easy to do an AGW riff, but better to warn about frostbite tonight.

Another horrifying consequence of man-made global warming.

Doesn’t the St. Lawrence Seaway close down about the end of November every year for precisely this reason? And reopen sometime in March?

The good part is it shuts off the ever present lake effect snow! At least for a while.

“Nearly 94 percent of lake is frozen”

I hope they mean 94% of the *surface* is frozen. Otherwise, where would all the fish go?

There was a time, perhaps sometime in the 19th Century, when people could simply WALK from Canada to the US - the lake was 100% frozen over, and was nearly June before some of the ports were accessible.

I’ve always heard that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake at any one time, anyway...
