NEW YORK (AP) — A slice of the New York City area mainstream — a police officer, a fire department paramedic, a rabbi, a nurse, a Boy Scout leader — used the Internet to anonymously collect and trade child pornography, federal officials said Wednesday. The six were among at least 70 men and one woman charged in a five-week operation by the Homeland Security Investigations arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal officials, who planned to announce the arrests a news conference later Wednesday, call it one of the largest local roundups ever of people who collect images of...

Grace, who lives in Hollywood, Fla., received her degree from Florida Atlantic University on Friday with a sparkling 3.8 grade-point average. She will receive her "other" diploma on Friday from Florida Atlantic University high school. After a concerned mother called 911 fearing her son was choking, an EMS worker proceeded to conduct an inspection of her house on the premise that she homeschooled, telling the woman “we’re agents of the state”. “The moment your child is complaining that his stomach hurts, then points to his chest instead, and his face is turning red and he’s coughing, so you call 911. Except, when EMS gets there they laugh at you and tell you if it’s asthma he won’t be complaining about “abdominal pain” (except he’s NOT because he’s POINTING TO HIS CHEST!!!) An open letter of encouragement from one homeschooler to another! Have you ever been told you weren't normal? That you didn't fit in? Well, twenty five years ago, that's exactly what was said to a wide eyed ADHD bundle of rambunctiousness named Jon. Even though I was making A's and B's, for the sake of everyone else's sanity, I was told I had to do kindergarten AGAIN because I was a "disturbance to the class". Faced with this situation, my mom made a very brave decision and decided to home school my brother and me. This was no easy task....

FULL TITLE: Boys turning to action-packed video games because books are 'too girly' for them, says award-winning children's author Boys are being put off reading because of the influence women have on children’s literature, says an award-winning children’s author. Jonathan Emmett warned that children’s books were too girly because of the influence of mostly female panels of editors, publishers, reviewers and judges. One publishing company’s research suggested women bought 95 per cent of picture books for children, he added. The writer believes boys are being starved of what they enjoy in books, such as swashbuckling pirates, battles, or technical details...
