The police in Hyderabad arrested a conman who would dupe women after marrying them.A smooth talker, K. Venkat Ratna Reddy had several women falling for him. Like Ranveer Singh's character in the movie 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl', Reddy promised marriage to women, and in this case married them too, and then duped them. Unlike the character in the movie, Reddy's story ultimately ended in the jail (at least for now). THE ARREST The Central Crime Station (CCS) unit of the Hyderabad Police arrested him for duping women in the name of marriage. He would approach women through a popular matrimonial...

The ghost pepper is one of the world’s hottest peppers, with a Scoville rating of more than a million. So it might follow that you shouldn’t ingest it in more than tiny quantities. And yet, the Journal of Emergency Medicine reports on the unusual case of a man who tore a hole in his esophagus after eating an incredibly hot ghost pepper. The 47-year-old American ate a burger topped with a “ghost pepper puree” as part of an eating contest. YouTube is rife with video of people eating these things, so you can probably guess how this one went: The...

[snip] Dakota Fred and son Dustin Hurt announced back in February that they were looking for crew members to run “a swift water suction dredge gold mine high up in the mountains of S E Alaska,” and the job posting included the sentence: “You will also need to be happy...

I don't like dishes that are strongly-flavored with fennel - we once made a slow-cooked pulled-pork recipe that was ruined for me by the fennel seed flavoring. So it surprised me that I really do like fennel root itself, when it's roasted with other vegetables. The picture above is of Ina Garten's Roasted Winter Vegetables; after we made it the first time, we did it again using carrots, parsnips, potatoes and - Fennel! We really liked it, a very warming Autumn-Winter side dish. Here is the original recipe, and you can switch out veggies as you like: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/roasted-winter-vegetables-recipe.htmlAs an aside,...

Microsoft is kicking off a controversial new security program this month by packaging all of its security updates into a single payload. The October security release introduces Redmond's new policy of bundling all security bulletins as one download. While more convenient for end users, who now get just one bundle, the move will irk many administrators, who had preferred to individually test and apply each patch to avoid compatibility problems. In total, ten bulletins have been bundled into the Patch Tuesday payload: MS16-118 is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer to address 11 security vulnerabilities, including six remote code execution...

A German slingshot enthusiast took his hobby to the next level with a giant wooden slingshot capable of flinging a bowling ball more than 300 feet. Joerg Sprave, star of The Slingshot Channel on YouTube, posted a video showing off the capabilities of his giant wooden slingshot using a bowling ball as a projectile. The homemade weapon launched the ball a distance of more than 328 feet. Sprave said he believes the slingshot could be adjusted to reach more than 430 feet.

A webcam trained on a nest of eagle chicks in the woods of Michigan also catches a glimpse of something else in the wild.Bigfoot, that mysteriously unkempt and anti-social gentlemen of the woodlands, has again made an appearance on camera in his trademark blurry yet intriguing style. This time the legendary cryptid has apparently been captured on the CarbonTV Eagle Cam in northern Michigan. The live webcam is trained on a bald eagle nest 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground near the Platte River State Fish Hatchery. As you can see in the video above, a dark lumbering figure...

Brock Yates, Car and Driver’s Assassin, lost his long battle with Alzheimer’s on October 5, 2016. We take solace in the words he crafted for this publication, his screenplays, and his books, a legacy that long ago became permanent and prominent chapters of the American legend... Yates joined Car and Driver in 1964, as managing editor—although he claimed no experience in either managing or editing... Yates created the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in 1971, a coast-to-coast public road race...

I have a young friend at work who is a wonderful baker, and dreams of having his own bakery someday. He lost his Mom to cancer several years ago, and often reminisces about her and things they did together. One of his favorite memories is of the two of them making this Ina Garten recipe for Pumpkin Roulade, and it has become one of his specialties: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/pumpkin-roulade-with-ginger-buttercream.htmlAnother co-worker has recently retired, and we are having a party for him at the end of the month. Whenever we had parties and I asked Nate what he wanted me to make, he...

We just saw the aftermath of a bear attack, so here’s a video showing a hunter scaring off a charging bear. Hunter Franz Albrecht was waiting for a bear to arrive when he got much more than he bargained for. He spots a full-grown sow come running toward the ridge on which he’s hunting, when suddenly two small cubs come trotting into the scene. This is about the worst situation for a hunter. Franz keeps his eye on the bear when it turns on a dime and starts rushing right at him. Instinctively, Franz stands his ground and begins yelling...

What do NFL quarterbacks do on their bye weeks? If you’re Carson Wentz, you go out and bag yourself a “bye week buck.” If you haven’t been keeping track, Carson Wentz is really good at football, and he’s an avid outdoorsman, too. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is off to an incredible start in his debut NFL season. He has lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 3-0 start and (knock on wood) has yet to throw an interception thus far. He’s a bright, young talent and is making an early bid for the NFL Rookie of the Year. On many occasions,...

I'm really not much of a cook at all. I don't have the patience or the concentration. It's therefore no surprise that I would fall back on cooking eggs - fried, boiled, or poached. When I fry the eggs, I prefer to use bacon grease, but butter works just fine. So does olive oil if I'm in a healthy mood. I recently ran across a scrambled eggs recipe that used Worcestershire sauce: You Never Knew You Needed Scrambled Eggs With Worcestershire Sauce I tried it and I liked it. The link led me to a couple other links: This Is...

Darrell Collison, of Charity, Missouri, may have already shot the biggest buck in the state this year. Just 3 days into the bow-hunting season, Darrell has bagged himself a buck that is making waves in the hunting world. The buck was green scored at 153 typical and non-typical 220 4/8 gross and 208 1/8 net with 29 points, however, the Dallas County game warden later came up with 36 points. The pictures of this buck will send chills down your spine, don’t believe us? Check them out:

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — One Bradenton man is trying to get rid of the overpopulated lionfish in an unconventional way, by glock-fishing underwater. This means shooting lionfish underwater with a glock pistol. Courtland Hunt said he taped his experience to raise awareness about the lionfish’s harmful overpopulation. FWC spokesperson, Amanda Nalley, said the FWC is aware of the video and the agency encourages people to remove lionfish, but not with firearms.

One of the most interesting food writers I’ve encountered, and an American Treasure, is John Thorne, who for many years produced a snail-mail newsletter called ‘Simple Cooking’. The newsletter doesn’t seem to be produced anymore, but fortunately we have the many books that he and his wife Matt Lewis have published. These are just delightful books to read, even if you aren’t going to cook any of the recipes in them: https://www.amazon.com/John-Thorne/e/B000AQ1J0Y/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1"I remember that one of Thorne’s newsletters contained a recipe for ‘Puffed Wild Rice’, which was suggested as a snack, a topping for salad, or even an addition to...
