Tour Atlanta’s Great Model Railroads
November is National Model Railroad Month. The Piedmont Division of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) celebrates November with a public tour of model railroads in the Atlanta Area.
Open House Layouts
The Piedmont Pilgrimage tour is open to anyone interested in model railroading. Just come in anytime during the scheduled times for each open house. The cost for entry is free! Children are welcome to attend with proper supervision from their parents. Bring your camera so that you can take home some great memories. We would love for you to join us as we celebrate National Model Railroad Month in November by visiting Atlanta's best layouts! Be sure to tell your friends.
Spreading the Word
The goal of the NMRA is to promote the fantastic hobby of model railroading, and the best way to learn about the hobby is to see for yourself the wonderful work of the Atlanta area experts. We are fortunate here in Georgia to have an incredibly large collection of outstanding model builders and all of them are very friendly and glad to invite you in to look at their work.

Tomorrow, Saturday 10/15/2016 marks the start of the annual Piedmont Pilgrimage. Until Sunday 11/20/2016 members will open their homes to the general public to display their model RR setups from N scale to G scale...tomorrow, for the first time, there are live ride-on steamers in 1.5" scale.
You do not have to be a model train geek to appreciate what this group has done. The fact that they open their homes to the general public (with snacks...!) is extraordinary. They are spread all throughout the Atlanta area, the overwhelming majority of the open houses are in the NE and NW OTP areas and grouped together in area clusters on that tour day.
Yes, this is a time that we must be fully engaged in the events in our nation. But take a few hours out of your weekend, if so inclined, put on your MAGA, FreeRepublic or other patriotic gear, go enjoy yourself and the fruits of others' labors and artistry while making some new acquaintances. If you have kids, grandkids, neighbor kids, take 'em. While it is not a children's "Thomas The Train" type of tour, they do welcome and encourage SUPERVISED children. To my absolute amazement, several of the owners, in the past, have encouraged kids to take over the moving operation controls. (These were not what I would call "throw-away" setups but on the actual permanent established layouts with trains and scenery costing many thousands of dollars!)
At the link you will see a few pix of each layout to determine if it is one you want to see. A few are in raw stages of design and layout while many are just jaw-dropping stunning. Not only are the operations, track and design layouts amazing but many of the landscapes, buildings and scenes are true works of art. Some more so than others but all worth seeing. Take plenty of video and pictures.

One day I will dig out all of my old layout and permanently set it up....if I ever manage to clean my attic.
If had some space, I would love to get into model railroad.
Very nice. My fascination with trains began on Christmas day at the age of 5 with a basic Lionel 027 circle set under the tree. Had to let my Lionel accumulation go when we were out of the country. Always wanted to return to train setups upon our return with HO, but haven't yet as always some combination of space, finances and time available preclude.
That's one of the reasons why these annual open houses are so valuable to me. I get to take it all in, with pix and videos to last me the rest of the year.

Continuing the North Georgia RR theme...here is a picture of the TVRR steam engine and tender at the Summerville turntable (north of Rome, GA) on it's weekend excursion from Chattanooga to Summerville.
That line runs every weekend until mid-November. One of our Fall drives is to Summerville to catch the steamer on the turntable.
My goal is to buy a property with a big room dedicated for a train layout, i’ve been collecting HO for over 35 years, mostly Southern and Union Pacific, my collection of the Daylights is pretty big, just this summer i bought a dozen Broadway Limited pre war Daylight coaches, superb detail.
Next will be another GS 4 Daylight but with DCC, sound and smoke.

Do “Z” scale. It really runs very good. Just remember—you get what you pay for.
I always joke that the N Scalers need to put a giant magnifying piece over their layout in order to see it. I expect for Z Scale I'd recommend a microscope. Nice but way too small.
N scale is good for me. Lots of stuff available and more coming every day.
Z scale trains operate on 0-10 volts direct current (DC) and offer the same operating characteristics as all other two-rail, direct-current, analog model railways.
Z scale locomotives can be retro-fitted with microprocessor based digital decoders for digitally controlled model railways.
Model trains, track, structures, and human/animal figures are readily available in European, North American, and Japanese styles from a variety of manufacturers.”
