I took a break from this list for two weeks but its back! This week we have a drama. I believe it comes from the PRC because the the writing in the credits appears to be the "simplified" version used in the Chinese mainland. This is a generational story about surviving hard times. It should require about 1.5 boxes of tissue per person watching as it is quite sad or emotional in places IMDb says: After Fugui and Jiazhen lose their personal fortunes, they raise a family and survive difficult cultural changes during 1940s to 1970s China. You Tube has...

Every Holiday season, I find something that would be great for a party, or for a gift - but I find it too late, and have to save the idea for next year. The day before Christmas I found this beautiful 'Sunflower Spinach Pie': There are many recipes for this on the web; I thought it could probably be done with prepared puff pastry, and people have done it that way, as well as with prepared bread roll dough. Here's a picture of the process, and then a link to a recipe: http://www.stylishboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/one.jpg http://www.italianchips.com/spinach-pie/ ******************************************************* While shopping at Aldi's I...

Connor Cummings, of Rockaway, N.J., and an 18-year-old pal managed to get onto an upper floor of the landmark hotel overlooking Central Park with several pieces of camera equipment Wednesday night, despite not being guests there, police said. They then attempted to climb scaffolding in an interior shaft leading to the roof of the 52 story luxury E. 57th St. hotel, police sources said. Cummings and his friend were nearing the roof when Cummings slipped and fell nine stories, crashing onto a 43rd floor landing, police said. He died at the scene.

Disney's VertiGo Combines Car, Helicopter to Drive Up Walls By Evan Ackerman Posted 29 Dec 2015 For robots, multimodal is the way to go, when going involves getting to as many places as you possibly can. Designing a robot with the ability to deal with a variety of terrains or conditions usually requires some creativity, and in the past, some of the most creative designs have come from ETH Zurich and Disney Research, like this wall-climbing base-jumping tornado-powered robot called Paraswift. As cool as Paraswift was, since it depended on suction to climb walls, it couldn't deal with rough surfaces...

Harriet Cohen plays "Cornish Rhapsody," which is associated with the 1940s film Love Story. The theme from "Cornish Rhapsody" is the film's musical theme. Composer is Hubert Bath. Hubert Bath himself conducts the rhapsody on the record, but Sidney Beer conducts on the film soundtrack.

"Warsaw Concerto" was composed for the 1941 film Dangerous Moonlight. It is played by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Muir Mathieson. It seems the film studio wanted a famous Rachmaninoff piece, but that was too costly--the next best thing is to pay a composer to write in the manner of Rachmaninoff (with some Grieg, too). Louis Kentner is at the piano. Louis Kentner is not named on the disc label nor on the original matrix cards, probably because as a "serious" performer he did not wish at that time to be associated with a film. If this was the...

Although they aren't as common as flying drones, we are seeing an increasing number of wall-climbing robots. What isn't so common, however, are devices like the VertiGo, which both drives on the ground and climbs up walls. Its climbing ability is particularly impressive, as it can even tackle walls with rough, uneven surfaces.

Hey all. Long-time lurker, first time poster. I was wondering if anyone could help me fill a request. I'm looking for back issues of Chronicles magazine, the "paleo-conservative" publication. However, I can't find any issues on amazon, ebay, or any other site. It's a fairly obscure magazine today, although it was much more popular in the 80s and 90s, from what I understand. I know you freepers are a resourceful bunch. I was hoping one of you might have some old issues you don't want anymore that I could have. I subscribed to National Review for a few years, but...

A young man from central Germany died in tragic circumstances on Christmas Eve after blowing up a condom machine with a homemade bomb. The 29-year-old from Münster was hit by a steel shard from the condom dispenser which was positioned on a quiet street, local police disclosed on Monday. Along with two friends, aged 27 and 29, the man had attached a homemade explosive device to the machine in an apparent attempt to get at the goods and money inside. But he was unable to make it to safety in time, with the door of his car still open as...

(This is a follow up to an earlier thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3374828/posts) WMF 5.0 has 'bug which resets the PowerShell module environment during installation' The revolution has been postponed: the long-awaited update to PowerShell that yesterday we reported as having launched, has now been pulled by Microsoft. Redmond says its reversal is due to “a bug which resets the PowerShell module environment during installation†that “can have a serious impact on our customers†because it “resets the PSModulePath environment variable to default values, losing any changes made prior to the WMF 5.0 RTM installation.†Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0 has therefore been...

Russian to sue computer company after 3-week-long gaming session led to loss of job & wife A Siberian gamer is suing the makers of Fallout-4 after he lost his job and broke up with his wife because of the video game. He wants 500,000 roubles (US$7,000) in compensation from the company, saying he did not know the game would "become so addictive." There have been similar cases around the world though. In 2010, a US federal judge said he would listen to a case brought by a Hawaiian man, who said he became addicted to video game Lineage II. Surprisingly,...

So this is an open letter that comes from my site. If you like it, I recommend reading it with all the gifs and extra links here => It's better than way, but I know some of you can't be bothered with the extra click, so I've copy/pasted the half-assed one below. Don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of the whole "if you carry a gun, you're not a Christian," meme. As if the notion of self-defense runs contrary to the teaching's of Jesus Christ (spoiler alert: they don't. I almost wrote that in all caps to scream...

You know who might like Legos even more than your kids? The company's employees. That*s because Lego is giving more than 17,000 employees around the world an extra month*s salary in January, the Copenhagen Post reports. A Lego spokesperson says to think of it more like a reward for a decade of success than a bonus. Plus, employees will get their normal bonuses in March anyway. In September, Lego announced an 18% increase in revenue over the previous year.

Cortana is good, but is it a Siri killer? Move over Siri, here comes something different. For the first time since its launch in April 2014, Cortana, Microsoft's voice-activated assistant, is now available on smartphones other than Windows devices. A surprise move that speaks volumes about Microsoft's newfound flexibility and willingness to abandon convention, the Cortana app works quite well on Apple's iPhone. But a Siri replacement it is not. Instead, Cortana makes it clear that there's room for two voices on the iPhone. There are some key differences between Siri and Cortana. Both can fetch web-sourceable information like weather...

Personal data belonging to the accounts of 3.3m Hello Kitty fans is available to download online - and much of it probably belongs to children. The database for sanriotown.com, the official online home of Hello Kitty and a large cast of other Sanrio characters, is easily accessible according to online security researcher Chris Vickery. This means that sensitive information including users' real names, email addresses, account passwords, genders, birthdays and country of origin is all exposed, or encoded in easy-to-crack form. Hello Kitty is popular amongst both adults and children, and internet security experts are warning parents to make sure...
