Magazine Back Issues (vanity)

Posted on 12/28/2015 5:36:26 PM PST by Dr. Talon

Hey all. Long-time lurker, first time poster. I was wondering if anyone could help me fill a request.

I'm looking for back issues of Chronicles magazine, the "paleo-conservative" publication. However, I can't find any issues on amazon, ebay, or any other site. It's a fairly obscure magazine today, although it was much more popular in the 80s and 90s, from what I understand.

I know you freepers are a resourceful bunch. I was hoping one of you might have some old issues you don't want anymore that I could have.

I subscribed to National Review for a few years, but it seems sterile and watered down now. I found Chronicles this year, and while I don't agree with everything expressed, I find it provocative nonetheless, hard-hitting, and in this day and age, downright counter-cultural. It's refreshing.

I also simply have a love of old magazines - they're time capsules in a way.

So, can someone PM me if they're interested? I'm specifically looking for anything from Feb. 2015 and back. I also have somewhat of an interest in old copies of The American Conservative, and perhaps pre-Bush 43 National Review.

Thanks!

Check out their website. There is a place where you can inquire about back issues.

Contact them and see if they have back issues available.

Thanks. I know about the ability to order back issues, and will probably do that. However, I’m looking for as many as possible, and it will almost certainly cost quite a bit of money. I’m also not sure how far back it’s possible to order issues. I thought, “Well, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

I figured it was worth a shot.

As a 100 % true blue paleoconservative I subscribed to Chronicles back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Is there any particular issue you are interested in?

Now that almost sounded nefarious - like you might want to get rid of old issues. What’s you’re drive?

Any and all, really. But in particular, the May 1990 issue seems interesting, as does the March 2013 one more recently. But who am I kidding? They all do. Is there a reason you quit subscribing? I heard that they had a huge drop in subscription numbers from 20,000 to around 5,000 in the 90s. On the internet I read someone from a think-tank who said he used to read it until it became “too weird”, whatever that means.

To reed13k, I assure you I have no nefarious plans. However, I’m fairly intellectual, quite conservative, and have become enthused by this magazine and seek to gobble up as many issues as I can get my hands on. As a relatively cash-strapped college student (history major), I can’t afford to purchase a ton of back issues at $7 or whatever the newsstand price is.

Do you want to buy issues, or, just read?

Your local public library might be able to get you articles. InterLibrary loan is a valuable service.

You can also try abebooks.com

Long shot, but I get most of my out-of-print and hard-to-find books from that site.

At the time I replied to your post I was quite certain I had every issue of Chronicles from about 1989 through 1996.

When I began to search for them in a place where I keep old magazines all I could find was old issues of Southern Partisan, Confederate Veteran, American Rifleman and Military History.

Apparently I threw away the Chronicles at some point in the last ten years or so...I really don’t remember. There was always some great articles by Michael Hill and Chilton Williamson and if I remember correctly Chronicles was the flagship publication of a think tank organization called The Rockford Institute.

Anyway, sorry if I got your hopes up. I’ll check at my office tomorrow to see if perhaps I had taken them up there to store them since I seem to be running out of space at home.

Good luck. I’ve subscribed on and off over the years. It’s always a worthwhile read.

I’m looking to buy issues. I prefer reading print because I absorb it better, and because I can feel my brain frying when I read a screen. I also like being able to go back and read an article or issue for nostalgia’s sake, or to look up arguments or anecdotes to use. I tend to keep magazines for years.

I’m willing to pay the cost of shipping.

Would InterLibrary loan go between library systems? My regional libraries don’t carry Chronicles.

Unfortunately, modern libraries tend to clean house - dispose of material books, magazines, etc that don’t circulate much.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Btw, as of June of this year, Chilton Williamson is the senior editor for Chronicles.

Yes, but, they probably could only get you articles, not the whole magazine.

Check e-bay too.

I already checked ebay. There was one copy, and I already purchased it. There doesn’t seem to be anything else.
