The radical leftist movement that has toppled statues across America has gained a major ally in our nation’s capital. In a Wednesday letter, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there are 11 statues currently standing in the U.S. Capitol Building that she wants removed. “Currently,” Pelosi wrote, “11 statues representing Confederate soldiers and officials are on display as part of the National Statuary Hall collection in the United State Capitol.

Those who learn everything they can from history are often condemned to watch helplessly as others repeat it. Few people have mastered the lessons of history better than Harvard historian Crane Brinton. Brinton’s 1938 book The Anatomy of Revolution, for instance, does a superb job explaining the outbreak of the English, French, Russian and American revolutions. It also provides a larger “lessons from history” picture, noting the general pattern of events that precede almost all those instances where a strong, well-established society collapses into revolutionary violence.
