  • Univ. of Florida to students: If someone’s Halloween costume upsets you, counselors are ready

Masquerading as educators God only knows what might actually be acceptable when you dress up and head out to mooch candy. We already know you can’t dress in a sexy burka, and I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest David Duke won’t go over well. Anyway, if you’re a University of Florida student and someone’s Halloween costume upsets you, fret not. Or do. And as you’re fretting about oh-so-upsetting costumes that “reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions,” there are counselors waiting 24/7 to take your call: October brings fall weather and Halloween. If you...

Miracle?... What’s the bigger surprise here? That the Washington Post wrote a story about a Scottsdale Scorpions game in the Arizona Fall League? Or that the Post actually took somewhat seriously the possibility that a Christian man laid hands on an ailing person and performed some modicum of healing? I don’t think the chances are very good that they run tomorrow’s Salt River Rafters box score, so I guess you’ve got your answer.
  • Taking ibuprofen could raise heart risk by a fifth

    Daily Mail ^ | Sept. 29, 2016 | Sophie Borland
Ibuprofen and other painkillers may trigger a heart condition which affects almost a million Britons, a major study has shown. Patients who regularly take the pills are up to 20 per cent more likely to develop heart failure. Long-term use of the medication causes chemical reactions in the body which place extra strain on the heart, research suggests. This can lead to heart failure in patients who have a history of previous heart attacks or high blood pressure. An estimated 900,000 adults in Britain have heart failure which occurs when the muscle becomes too weak to pump blood around the...

Another documented bear spray failure.  In this case the victim chose to use bear spray instead of the pistol he had with him.  It is an interesting contrast with Kim Woodman, who was also charged by a sow grizzly with cubs.  Kim had a 10 mm pistol, a Glock model 20.  He stopped the charging grizzly at almost contact distance. Kim only had 30 yards to react.  Todd says the grizzly charged him from 80 yards off. Link to video From Todd's facebook post:  I yelled a number of times so she knew I was human and would hopefully...

YouTube has ‘unlisted’ and added a warning to the new Donald Trump ad entitled “Dangerous” posted Tuesday morning by the Team Trump account that focuses on national security and warns that Hillary Clinton does not have the stamina and judgment to keep America safe. YouTube also placed the ad behind the “Restricted Mode” firewall that blocks “inappropriate content’.
  • "The Island Where People Forget to Die" and Social Ecosystems

You might have seen this article The Island Where People Forget to Die a few years ago. I recently re-read this exploration of "blue zones" where people habitually live long, productive lives, and read a companion piece on the "blue zone" author's discoveries about food and diet: My Dinner With Longevity Expert Dan Buettner. What really struck me in this re-reading was the centrality of purposeful work and a robust social ecosystem in the lives of the productive/active elderly. This mechanical mindset leads us to conclude that doing time on a treadmill and being hyper-vigilant about sticking to a strict...
  • Why I’ve Never Forgotten a Japanese Girl

Even expensive MRIs, designed to detect even minute spinal cord changes, are at times unable to diagnose the cause of pain 58 years ago I made an unfortunate decision. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong Japanese girl. But the problem was not what you’re thinking! Rather, I was in Tokyo, travelling with my wife and her parents. My father-in-law and I decided to experience a Japanese massage at the Imperial Hotel. During the event a petite masseuse suddenly struck the side of my head with a hard blow. I swear to High Heaven...
  • Artful Veteran Affairs

We’ve got to stop using veterans as political pawns Department of Veteran Affairs has for its mission statement: To fulfill President Lincoln´s promise: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America´s Veterans. Naturally, funds are needed to serve the purpose, but how come it is that the VA goes on an art shopping spree while our Veterans’ life span is dramatically reduced by inhuman living conditions and lack of medical care? While the department worries about overpayments to ex-soldiers and...

The perfect storm for a humanitarian and public health disaster is brewing in the U.S. and the mainstream media is largely ignoring it. It’s the politically incorrect elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. With the influx of well over one million new persons each year not born in the U.S, diseases that rarely occurred or were eliminated have begun to re-emerge, putting all Americans at risk. Breitbart reports, “Until recently, most Americans believed these diseases were gone from our shores for good. But a politicized public health system and a rise in the subsidized migration...

Do you remember the 1964 movie “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”? In any event, that movie title inspired today’s column because of its obvious tongue-in-cheek nature. To be politically correct: Thou shalt not look another person in the eye while walking down the hall at work or on the street. That person may feel intimidated by your bold and uninvited eye contact.

As Election Day draws near, it looks like a slim majority of Drug Store News readers would prefer to see Donald Trump in the White House, according to our most recent online reader poll. Though the candidates are separated by fewer than 100 votes, at press time, 51% of readers (1163 votes) said they would vote Trump if the election were tomorrow, whereas 49% (1101 votes) said Hillary Clinton was their pick. These are the most recent results, but Drug Store News has been asking readers all year for their opinions on which candidate’s policies they would favor. We began...

Single Payer push On Tuesday, I talked about the real reason Bill Clinton and The New York Times had suddenly decided to attack ObamaCare as an expensive, confusing, unworkable mess. Far from being an off-the-cuff comment, I argued, Bill was doing exactly what he’d been ordered to do. The left is salivating over the federal power that would come with a single payer system, Hillary’s wanted one for decades, and they need to boost support in key liberal demos. This is their pivot moment. As I wrote two days ago: It’s time to pivot toward single payer. Of course, this...
  • The real reason the Clintons - and the New York Times - are suddenly trashing ObamaCare

Hint: They don't care about your healthcare in the least. • Impossible to argue otherwise • Pivot Toward Single Payer This morning, Dan discussed a recent Bill Clinton speech in which the former President trashed Obamacare as a “crazy” system which hurts small business. In case you haven’t seen the clips, seen below. So, if they’re admitting what conservatives said all along - that ObamaCare is an unworkable mess - you have to ask why. Here’s the answer:
  • ObamaCare a 'crazy system' that 'doesn't work', says . . . Bill Clinton?

Frenemy. He’s right, of course, although you suspect his preferred solution is not a free market system that lets individuals make their own economic arrangements without the interference of the state. ObamaCare is just about the craziest thing in the world, and not only for the people who make just too much to get subsidies. It’s crazy for the people with subsidies too because the quality of the care they can receive under such a cost-controlled structure is far less than if they simply paid the same money out of pocket directly for services.
  • ObamaCare losses so bad there's no money to bail out the insurers

But Obama wants to do it anyway, and where do you suppose he wants to get the money? You can have one guess A few days ago, we talked about the continued disaster that is ObamaCare. But I thought it would be worth taking a close look at one specific aspect of this disaster, because if President Obama gets his way, it will cost you. Dearly. You might remember that, back in the days when the Obama Administration was trying to ram ObamaCare through Congress, health insurers were strangely on board supporting the bill. Why would they do that?

Probably nothing like his critics - or his supporters - think To listen to some Trump supporters, you’d think a President Trump would swoop into Washington, apply his mad skills and business acumen to clean up Washington, pull in the reins on the federal bureaucracy, tame the IRS and get things running in a ship-shape manner. To listen to some of his critics, Trump would destroy all rights for minorities, women and the disabled while completely mismanaging everything Washington does and ultimately pushing all the nuclear buttons, thus destroying the world.

Deaths in the U.S. due to prescription drug overdose are reaching crisis proportions. The increase in the death rate due to all prescription drugs has been primarily due to the increase in prescription opioid pain medications. State governments are looking for a solution to the problem. Historically, it has been very easy for people to obtain opioid prescriptions from multiple doctors; therefore, an obvious solution is to monitor who is receiving all opioid prescriptions. States enacted Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP) which record who is filling opioid prescription medications at every pharmacy in the state. The information goes into a...

Gutted: Polypharmacy and the epidemic of suicide among post-9/11 veterans “Hammerhead sharks feasting on the dead make a unique sound.” So says William, a disabled Navy veteran and survivor of a horrifying incident that occurred in the Persian Gulf. At the age of twenty, William enlisted in the Navy and served for six years, working on radar and weapons systems. On 18 November 2001, he was part of a team from the destroyer USS Peterson that boarded the Samra, a suspected oil smuggler sailing under the UAE flag. The Samra capsized on the port side, and William spent the night...

Your skin…Your diseases — lovingly cared for, for all eternity!” —Baron Harkonnen’s doctor treating the diseased pustules in the Baron’s skin, DUNE, 1984. “Incoming migrants are bringing long-eradicated diseases to Germany and are putting the medical system under extreme stress. As well as bringing a rising tide of crime and attitudes towards women that many consider incompatible with modern European values, the over one and a half million migrants who flowed into Germany last year have also brought...
