This is what occurs in a slow-news environment at The Washington Post: they lament the lack of honors for Barack Obama. The front page of Saturday’s paper carried the headline “Hawaii wipes out in Obama honors.†With nothing better to do in Honolulu, White House reporters Greg Jaffe and Juliet Eilperin spent 1,286 words unspooling the “embarrassing record†of Hawaii’s failure to name more than a snowcone after the current president. The story began at Sandy Beach, where former Honolulu city councilman Stanley Chang wanted to name a favorite Obama hangout for the president: “It was almost a prose poem,â€...

Here’s a little something for you little people. Now days it’s just another excuse to go shopping to pick up some more stuff on sale that you don’t need, don’t really want and will eventually end up in a box somewhere.Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your Christmas Eve and Christmas gatherings. I know the Wons did. They pre-recorded their annual Christmas greeting to the little people while still in...

HONOLULU -- Stanley Chang hatched a plan last year to overcome seven years of failed attempts to name something after Hawaii's most famous native son. His target: Sandy Beach, a stunning strip of sand and volcanic ash that he hoped to re-christen "Barack Obama Beach." Chang had heard from a congressional staffer that Obama often spoke fondly of body surfing there as a teen. And he had read an interview in which the president described his ideal day as one spent at the Oahu beach. "It was almost a prose poem," Chang said. Obama imagined a sea turtle swimming in...

So far, since Obama flew off to Hawaii he has done nothing but golf. Since he arrived there, we have had the angry black woman run over 35 people in Las Vegas, ending the life of a young mother of three. In Afghanistan, where Obama declared all combat operations over, six Americans were killed. Obama has remained silent on these two incidents, and has instead been busy golfing with Bobby Titcomb. Who is Bobby Titcomb? He is the Obama pal who was arrested in 2011 for 'soliciting prostitute' in Hawaii sting operation. Talk about Obama priorities.

FLOTUS, POTUS, the Wee Wons and the usual entourage depart today for their well deserved 17 day vacation in Hawaii.Butt before you start complaining let me point out that Big Guy has ordered a detour en route in order to demonstrate appropriate empathy and compassion for the San Bernardino workplace survivors of gun violence. First draft of his remarks blame the attack on a video that somebody made for the culturally insensitive Christmas party that was being held by the department. And if you don’t think this drive-by is a major sacrifice let me assure you, it is; it means Barry...

Scientists involved in Hawaii astronomy are hopeful that builders of a giant telescope planned for a mountain held sacred by Native Hawaiians don't give up on the project. A recent state Supreme Court decision invalidated the $1.4 billion project's permit to build on conservation land, which could delay construction by several years. The nonprofit company building the Thirty Meter Telescope hasn't yet indicated its next move. Protesters say they will continue to fight the telescope. ...

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review the ability of cities and states to prohibit semiautomatic high-capacity assault weapons that have been used in some of the nation’s most deadly recent mass shootings. The justices decided not to reconsider a lower court’s decision in a case from the city of Highland Park, Ill., near Chicago. But seven states — Maryland, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York — have similar bans, and all of the prohibitions remain in place. Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia said the court should review the ban, which “flouts†the court’s Second...

Strict controls on the ownership and use of guns have been enacted in a number of polities in the United States. One of the supposed purposes of such laws is to reduce the murder rate. Murder rates in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) consist of murder and non-negligent manslaughter. When strict controls do not produce low murder rates, such as in Chicago or Washington D.C., the claim is made that the problem is the easy access to guns in areas outside of the polity with the strict controls. In Washington, D.C., it is claimed that criminals can easily obtain...
