Three U.S. Islands with Strict Gun Control and their Murder Rates

Three U.S. Isands With Strict Gun Control

Strict controls on the ownership and use of guns have been enacted in a number of polities in the United States.   One of the supposed purposes of such laws is to reduce the murder rate.  Murder rates in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) consist of murder and non-negligent manslaughter.

When strict controls do not produce low murder rates, such as in Chicago or Washington D.C., the claim is made that the problem is the easy access to guns in areas outside of the polity with the strict controls.  In Washington, D.C., it is claimed that criminals can easily obtain guns in Virginia.  In Chicago, gun shops in Indiana are blamed as the source of guns.

Here is a look at three island polities that are under U.S. Jurisdiction that have implemented strict controls on gun purchases and ownership.  These islands must be reached by air travel, where the carry of firearms is highly regulated and restricted, or by ship.   If the problem with crime rates in Washington, D.C. and Chicago, or even New York City, is caused by the inflow of guns from areas with less restrictions on the purchase and ownership of guns, these polities should show a decrease in murder rates, as criminals cannot simply drive across state lines to obtain firearms.

Murder rates have been selected because they are the most carefully reported and investigated crimes, so they provide the best index of unjustified violence.

Hawaii, the U.S Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico have strict gun control. The controls in the U.S. Virgin Islands are stricter than those in Hawaii; Hawaii and Puerto Rico controls are very similar. Even so, the murder rate in Hawaii is less than 5% of that in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a little more than 6% of what it is in Puerto Rico.

Strict gun control laws have virtually no effect.

People who want to commit murder aren’t going to be deterred by any law; the presence or absence of guns has no effect.

Liberals always like to say but another law.... will do the job.

Experience refutes them.

Hmm. What does Hawaii have in common with Utah? They both lack certain cultural/ethnic components?

Amen.

I am continuously dumfounded that liberals think a “gun-free zone” will stop someone from killing. If they are going to kill someone, a “gun-free zone” law will have zero effect.

Those guns are obviously coming in because people are driving across the border to other states with lax gun laws. Duh.

“What does Hawaii have in common with Utah?

Both have populations that generally respect the rule of law, and think that the government can be counted on to follow the rules, at least most of the time. There is a general believe that disputes can be settled in the courts.

Those are the primary relevant similarities.

Jamaica had a significant majority of black people in 1962, when it was ruled as part of the British Empire. People generally had faith that the laws would be administered as written, and the police were not corrupt.

The murder rate in Jamaica in 1962 was 3.9 per 100,000. Gun control was modest by today’s standards.

After Independence and the corruption of the government and the police force, (and draconian gun control) the murder rate skyrocketed. It is now down a bit from the highest, at 45.1 per 100,000.

Strict gun control laws have virtually no effect.

In politics one size doesn't fit all. Laws that ban gun ownership for mostly Democrat voters can be a good thing. About 20% of Democrats have a serious mental illness. Fortunately they self organize themselves into high density concentration camps known as cities.

the claim is made that the problem is the easy access to guns in areas outside of the polity with the strict controls.

Easy to counter this argument

Ask "Then why don't those areas with easy access have high murder rates"

It is a good argument.

All are variations on the theme: It is not the inanimate objects, the guns, it is the culture and attitudes of the people.

Hawaii may have a high rate of tourist, retirement & business types with higher valid and less interest in crime and more self sufficient money.
Utah is seriously dominated by Mormons, having strong Conservative values.

This as good a place as any to list Germany's approach to gun control, which would not work here as the liberals would push the envelope to ban all ownership.

Check out The Schnitzel Republic which has two articles futher down that, IMO, are interesting:

Saxony-Anhalt Weapons Story

99.99% of guns in America are peaceful. It’s only the radicalized guns that we need to worry about.
