A suspect has chewed off an elderly man's ear and some of his face in a horrific attack on a Portland train platform. The injuries were so severe that some of the 78-year-old man's skull was exposed after the violent attack in the suburb of Gresham in the state of Oregon on Tuesday morning. Police were able to intervene but not before the elderly man was left sickeningly maimed, authorities said after the attack. A Gresham man shot and killed one of four intruders who had entered his mobile home Saturday and began stabbing him with a knife. The 34-year-old resident fought back by grabbing a pistol and shooting two of his attackers, Gresham police say. Police arrived to find one of the suspected intruders, a 25-year-old man, dead at the scene from a gun injury. The resident also shot a 16-year-old suspect, who was brought to a local hospital and Sunday morning was still being treated there.

The state’s Bureau of Labor and Industries could fine the owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, which has since closed its doors and become a home bakery in response to the controversy, up to $150,000.

GRESHAM -- A teacher's aide at the Academy of Alternatives School in Gresham, who was convicted of murder at age 16, was arrested last week in the rape and sodomy of a 15-year-old student. Sgt. Teddi Lofton, a spokeswoman for the Gresham Police Department, said 27-year-old Daniel Alcazar of Southeast Portland, was arrested May 18. Alcazar is being held without bail in the Justice Center Jail for violating the terms of his probation while a grand jury considers charges of third-degree rape and third-degree sodomy against him, Lofton said. The Gresham Police are cutting off the United Way. They'll no longer allow the charity organization to collect donations from officers, because the United Way stopped its support for the Boy Scouts. "Until they modify their anti-discrimination policy, we don't want to be solicited by them," said spokesman Paul Poitras. There's no word yet on whether or not the city will challenge the move by police.
