Gresham man robbed of gun he was openly carrying

A man practicing his open carry right was robbed of the gun he was openly carrying.

William Coleman III was robbed of his Walter- brand P22 just after 2:00 a.m. October 4 in Gresham by a young man who asked him for it — and flashed his own weapon as persuasion.

Coleman, 21, was talking to his cousin in the 17200 block of NE Glisan St., after purchasing the handgun earlier that day, when a young man asked him for a cigarette, police said.

The man then asked about the gun, pulled a gun from his own waistband and said “”I like your gun. Give it to me.”

Coleman handed over the gun and the man fled on foot.

The suspect is thin a black male, between 19 and 23 years old, clean cut with a small patch of facial hair on his chin, and short black wavy hair.

He is roughly six feet tall, wearing grey sweatpants, a white T-Shirt and flip-flop sandals.

The weapon he used in the robbery was described as a possibly semi-automatic, black gun, Gresham Police said.

Anybody who may have information on this case is asked to call the Gresham Police Tips line at 503.618.2719.

Maybe William Coleman IV will be just a tad smarter.

And other ways to do the same are virtually infinite in number.

That’s why I prefer concealed carry and why I don’t let people get anywhere near me in parking lots and such. I will grab the gun and tell the dirtbags not to come any closer to me. they have been known to get quite agitated but so what. I had a cop telling me (and a group of about 100 other people) the same thing two days ago-don’t let them get close to you and always be on the lookout.

While I understand what you are saying, if the People you are referring to aren’t presenting a clear danger, you could get Arrested for Brandishing a Weapon.

Just sayin...

I get what you are saying but...I have never had to pull it out of the holster and open carry is legal here in Ohio. so it isn’t really brandishing. Nobody has any business coming up to me in a parking lot and asking me to pull out my wallet for them. Some of these aholes are very aggressive in their begging. It isn’t uncommon to be approached in the bay of the car wash, for example, where nobody can see what’s happening. I make it clear to them that I feel threatened because I do. I certainly don’t want to shoot anyone but if they continue to approach after my warning, they have escalated the situation. they’re now a CLEAR THREAT.

Sorry RC. I read your earlier Post thinking you actually pulled the Weapon in those situations.

Just cradling the Gun in the Holster would give them the message, unless they were Dumber than a Box of Barbara Boxers.

Yes open carry is legal in Ohio..but I prefer to conceal carry....since CCW became legal in Ohio I have never had to draw my weapon.....but I did have to flash it a couple times to avoid trouble.

For some strange reason my being armed made other people think twice about trying to kick my ass.

There was a time when I was out in the middle of the new mexico desert that I almost had to pull it but seeing my hand on it getting ready to draw it was enough to send three thugs scurrying back to the shadows. Two dudes were literally circling and flanking me and the wife as I pumped gas and another dude was standing in the middle of the road posted as a lookout. Pretty sure that little J frame .357 mag saved my life that day but I carry a bigger gun now.

Small world...I carry a K frame S&W stainless .357 with a 4” barrel and hogue grips.

But I’m old school.

I have 3 S&W .357 magnum revolvers that I love and will not part with-the aforementioned M&P340, a 686 deluxe 3” barrel, and an 8 shot 327 night guard with a 2 1/2” barrel. I love them but I carry a Glock 20 or 29. The 10mm auto has more energy than the .357 magnum (especially with the short barrels) and more rounds in the magazine plus less recoil and blast. I have a 3” 629 that is probably my favorite pistol. I am set up to carry it but I don’t. usually.

Where was William Coleman III’s situational awareness? Some people shouldn’t carry, unless it’s a sign ...

You don’t “open carry” at 2 AM. If you do, it had better be ready to pull and fire.

I’ve got several semi-auto 22LR pistols - none of them I’d consider one I’d want to sport “open carry” at 2AM somewhere.

I agree with you. Never let them get behind you if you can help it and never let them get within lunging distance.

“The suspect is thin a black male, between 19 and 23 years old...”

I tell my kids “It’s okay to profile - it could save your life.” And that includes questionable white guys, and young people of any sex or color in a large group.

I was proud of my daughter (now 17). Just the other day she was on her bike, and some lady stopped to ask her directions. “But it was okay - I had a park bench between me and her car, and I spoke to her through the passenger window and had an escape route. It was weird though - where I told her to turn, she just kept going.”

Are your guns registered? Did you know that recently in Vermont, some libtard newspaper published every single registered gun owner in that state, making them a target for criminals who want some guns? Let’s say that after you’ve noticed a dozen of your neighbors have been targeted by either criminals or police, how many of those guns will you really have access to?

Did you report these events of brandishing your weapon? If not, how can such events show up on the recent Bullshiite statistics from the FBI showing that gun ownership is ineffective against crime? /s
