  • Trump calls scolding by Newt Gingrich 'inappropriate'

Donald Trump said Monday it was "inappropriate" for Newt Gingrich to demand he drop the subject of an American judge's ethnicity and start acting like "a potential leader of the United States." But Trump let stand widespread scolding from other Republican leaders who want him to lay off the jurist — a sign that the GOP presidential candidate doesn't want to blow up the fragile truce he has struck with the party establishment. Trump insisted that his comments about the judge came in defense against relentless questions from reporters and others about lawsuits against Trump University. Trump said U.S. District...

Newt Gingrich confirms that he's running for President in 2012 because you know he would never backtrack from a statement like this: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he shouldn't have called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist, but said he was still concerned that she would bring bias to her decisions.

A day after former Newt Gingrich called Donald Trump's latest comments on Judge Gonzalo Curiel "inexcusable," the presumptive Republican nominee fired back at the former House speaker, who has largely been supportive of his candidacy. "As far as Newt is concerned, I saw Newt," Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Monday after the show played clips of Hillary Clinton and Gingrich denouncing his remarks speculating that Curiel's Mexican heritage represented a conflict of interest in the cases against Trump University over which he is presiding. "I was surprised at Newt. I thought it was inappropriate what he said."

I was watching one of the cable news shows recently and Newt was a guest and he said something that stuck with me. Not an exact quote but the main idea of what he said. Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California in 1966 because Americans watched the (American) flag being burned. Richard Nixon was elected President in 1968 because Americans watched the flag being burned. Donald Trump will be elected President in 2016 because Americans watched the American flag being burned by illegal aliens carrying the Mexican flag.

Mitt Romney’s advisers begged him not to go to war with...Trump. After he decided to go ahead, Mr. Trump dismissed him as “lightweight” and “failed candidate.” This week, Newt Gingrich called him “pathetic.” Mr. Romney, sticking to his guns, has become a rare figure in American history—a former presidential nominee openly defying the man succeeding him as his party’s standard-bearer. Sitting at his home on the Pacific Ocean last week, Mr. Romney reflected on the waves he created by attacking Mr. Trump, how his family helped persuade him it was the right thing to do, and how he increasingly finds...

Really interesting stuff from National Review's Eliana Johnson, whose latest campaign dispatch sheds light on just how close Newt Gingrich has become with the presumptive Republican nominee -- and how hard the former House Speaker is said to be lobbying behind the scenes for a spot on the ticket. Are you ready for Trump/Gingrich 2016, America? Gingrich has, in effect, launched his own campaign to secure the nomination. “I think Newt is lobbying to be the vice president, and I think their people are paying a lot of attention to him,” says Ed Rollins, a Republican operative and former Gingrich...

Newt Gingrich on Monday panned Mitt Romney’s campaign against Donald Trump as a weak effort that had not hurt the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee. “It’s pathetic,” he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "I don’t know what happened to Mitt, but it is weird; it is bizarre. Having a guy like that go berserk in public makes you wonder what his problems are." Romney has emerged as one of the biggest critics of Trump, and earier this year gave a speech that excorciated him. “Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud,” he said on March 3 at...

Actual quote from Ed Rollins about the fact that a Trump/Gingrich ticket would have six wives between them: “They certainly understand women.” ... Gingrich has a reputation for insinuating himself into campaigns by firing off dozens of e-mails brimming with ideas that range from brilliant to insane. While it’s a quality that has irritated previous presidential candidates such as John McCain and Mitt Romney, sources say that Trump has come to value the former speaker’s opinions. “They talk every day,” says a source familiar with the relationship, who claims that Gingrich e-mails Trump, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and campaign manager...
  • Newt Gingrich: By November, Trump Will "Consolodate" Support While Clinton "Continues To Stagnate"

Former House Speaker and potential/rumored pick for Trump running mate, Newt Gingrich, speaks with Fox News Channel's Maria Bartiromo about his general election predictions. He forecasts that by November, the race will no longer be close, and that Trump will win by "a suprisingly big number" like Ronald Reagan did in 1980. NEWT GINGRICH: I don't think these polls signal a close race by November. I think if you look at the trend line, it signals that Trump will probably consolodate support while Hillary Clinton continues to stagnate. And the odds are pretty good Trump will win just like Reagan...

As Donald Trump, the eventual GOP presidential nominee, sifts through a handful of potential vice presidential picks, one is rising to the top in Washington and conservative circles: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. "He does all the things that Trump needs," said a Trump advisor. While in the past it was key for candidates to consider a geographical teaming, with Trump the issue is energizing the Republican voting blocks with a running mate that could also provide savvy counsel once elected. Insiders said that Gingrich's assets are his close ties to conservatives and the pro-life movement and his years as...

Over the last three months, Trump watchers have noticed that former House speaker and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has been consistently advocating on Trump’s behalf in the media, on Capitol Hill, among K Street power brokers, and on social media. In fact, Gingrich has morphed into Trump’s unofficial ambassador for GOP peace and unity, while also seeking converts in hostile territory. Gingrich is the most recognized and respected member of the GOP establishment who is defending the insurgent candidate — even as Trump rails against that same establishment. But now, it has become apparent that Gingrich is waging...

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is now the leading candidate to be tapped by Donald Trump as his running mate, a close confidante of Trump tells Newsmax... Trump is said to favor Gingrich for several reasons. First, Trump recognizes he is a Washington neophyte and sees in Gingrich someone who can school him in the legislative process and “make nice” with Capitol Hill... Trump has other reasons he is leaning toward Gingrich. He is said to personally like him. Rubio, Newsmax reported, has already been eliminated though he lobbied through surrogates for the job. Rubio has denied doing so.

“[I]n the case of Paul Ryan he made a big mistake today and he needs to understand this,” Gingrich said. “He is the Speaker of the House. He has an obligation to unify the party. He has an obligation to reach out. Obviously he and Donald Trump are going to have disagreements. Some of them will work out and some of them they won’t. That’s fine. Our constitution provides that speakers and presidents can fight, but I think he sends the wrong signal and a signal which I think endangers the House Republicans and endangers the Senate Republicans.”

The elites’ refusal to grapple with the reality before their eyes continued long after it was obvious Trump was no passing phenomenon. They resorted to increasingly implausible rationalizations to explain his success. “In nearly every election cycle, there are candidates who lead national polls and sometimes even win states, but don’t come close to winning the nomination,” explained Nate Cohen of the New York Times in December. “It would be tough for Mr. Trump to prevail in a one-on-one contest against a typical mainstream Republican, much in the same way that Mr. Buchanan quickly faltered against Mr. Dole.” Why, since...
