Former Rep. Gabby Giffords’ pro-gun-control group has taken down a harsh ad against Arizona House candidate Martha McSally after the Republican explained her position on allowing stalkers to buy guns. The ad features a woman named Vicki who recounts how her 19-year-old daughter was hunted down and murdered by an enraged ex-boyfriend, while a narrator says McSally, who is running for Giffords’ old seat in Congress, “opposes making it harder for stalkers to get a gun.” The ad drew criticism, including from The Arizona Republic’s editorial page, which termed it “vile,” and McSally blasted it as inaccurate, noting she herself...

When a gunman attempted to murder Rep. Gabriel Giffords in January 2011, the country was shocked by what was widely interpreted as an act that symbolized the incivility that had transformed American politics. That assumption, which was primarily aimed at undermining the Tea Party movement that had swept the midterm elections months before in the 2010 midterms, was soon debunked when we learned the shooter was an apolitical madman. But liberals have never ceased yapping about the implications of their opponents’ alleged meanness. Now it turns out the person who is doing the most to give the lie to this...

Gabby Giffords, irreproachable figure of sympathy, has fashioned an improbable new role for herself this election year: ruthless attack dog. The former Democratic congresswoman, whose recovery from a gunshot wound to the head captivated the country, has unleashed some of the nastiest ads of the campaign season, going after GOP candidates in Arizona and New Hampshire with attacks even some left-leaning commentators say go too far. And Republicans on the receiving end are largely helpless to hit back, knowing a fight with the much-admired survivor is not one they’re likely to win. Some of the toughest spots from Giffords’ newly...

In its fourth advertisement released this week, a pro-gun control group applauded a Republican congressman’s efforts to reduce gun violence. Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS), the group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords after she was critically wounded in a shooting outside of a supermarket in 2011, is urging Pennsylvanians to vote for GOP Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick in November’s election. As the narrator explains in the 30-second spot, “Not Afraid to Lead,” the incumbent congressman has attempted to encourage his colleagues — both Republicans and Democrats — in Washington to pass stricter gun control measures. Last year, Fitzpatrick co-sponsored a...

On September 12, TIME magazine ran a column by gun control proponent Gabby Giffords, in which she argued that gun control must be expanded for women's sake. Giffords' starts the column by revisiting the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) under Bill Clinton. She says that law has been good--"annual rates of domestic violence have dropped by more than half" since its passage--but she does not think it goes far enough. She wants a more stringent VAWA, one that expands gun control beyond marriage and into dating relationships. This would include new gun control laws for boyfriends, "partners,"...

Americans for Responsible Solutions--the group formed by gun control proponents former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly--has issued a new report listing five ideas "to reduce gun violence." Four of the five revolve around temporary gun confiscation or gun bans. The report begins with the fairly innocuous idea of to removing "loopholes" where they exist between states and the federal government regarding information on the mentally ill. But after that, the focus turns to confiscation: Idea Two: "Authorize law enforcement to remove access to guns, with court oversight and plenty of protections to prevent abuse of this...

Former Arizona Rep. Giffords and Kelly visited the Hearst headquarters in New York on Monday morning to speak with Ellen Levine, editorial director of Hearst magazines. During their presentation they revealed a number of startling facts: American women are eleven times more likely to be killed by guns than in any other high-income country, and every month, nearly 50 women are shot to death by a...
