  • Remember the shopping malls of the early 1980s

Back to the Crabtree Mall. It was the best thing going back in the early 1980s. The main anchors were Ann & Hope, Lechmere and Zayre's with a nice food court that included the ubiquitous Orange Julius, Mrs Field's cookies, Auntie Jenn's Pretzels and some Chinese fast food joint in which you could get a heaping plate of rice and meat with Chinese women standing outside of it offering free samples of stuff on toothpicks. What was not to like? Another anchor was Sears & Roebuck which was quite the store and they had dungarees, lawn mowers, washing machines and...

The plant world’s annual race beginsIf dandelions were hard to grow, we’d pay $2.49 for a slender package of seeds and hold festivals in their honor. There’s often a fine line between what we define as a weed or esteem as a pretty little flower. This distinction is front of mind this time of year as the plant world’s annual race begins for real, everything busting out into bud and bloom over the next few weeks. It would take a lot of willpower to pull off with a straight face, but we just might get away with redefining our luxuriant...

  • What to eat for breakfast if you want to have a productive day

THE saying goes that breakfast is the most important meal of the day — but apparently only if you eat the right thing. Those hoping to hear the full English is the way forward will be sorely disappointed too. According to William Cole, who specialises in nutrition, what we should be eating first thing is a little more unusual. He told Mind, Body, Green that a breakfast crammed with fat is the key to maintaining energy levels throughout the day, and eating this way will make you more productive.

"Wildman Steve Brill" served the audience dandelions, chickweed and onion grass during his presentation on edible weeds at the Scarsdale Public Library on March 31. Steve Brill has been foraging, or gathering wild foods, for over 35 years. Early on he was arrested and handcuffed by undercover park rangers for eating a dandelion in Central Park. Subsequently, after his educating the New York City Parks Department, they hired him to give public foraging tours in Central Park. We dipped corn chips into a delightful pesto made with garlic mustard. Garlic mustard (scientific name Alliaria petiolata) came from Europe and parts...

The popular travel discount company Travelocity is calling for an investigation after its Gnome spokesperson was severely mistreated today by a private security detail associated with United Airlines. The incident began when the "Roaming Gnome" was scheduled to film a new commercial in New York City. He was seated in the plane when a United employee announced that, due to overbooking, four passengers had to be bumped from the flight. United offered seats on a next-day flight, along with an extra bag of peanuts. When no one took the offer, they upped the offer to a seat with extra leg...

I have to admit it. I love me some IHOP pancakes. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals to eat at restaurants, though itÂ’s funny, because IÂ’m normally a savory foods girl. I like to order chicken fried steak, bacon or eggs. BUT thereÂ’s always an exception when we go to IHOP. I always get their pancakes. They are amazeballs! I found this copycat version from a blog off Pinterest and read all the reviews. They were all great and everyone said they loved them. Some commented they were better than IHOPÂ’s. So that was the seller to me. I...

"In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Young men spend a lot of time thinking of love. I sure did when I was a young man. Spring would come with Daffodils and Robins and me having thoughts of love. Of course, I was having thoughts of love in Summer, Fall and Winter, too, but Spring really seemed to bring out the thoughts of love in me. I grew up in the 70s and the girls wore Hot Pants. Hot Pants seemed to bring out the thoughts of love in me, too. I'd like to...

Tasked with helping design a shovel for women, the Penn State University graduate student watched a few of them digging, and felt embarrassed for them. "They are all digging wrong," he whispered to Liz Brensinger as they observed the volunteers pushing a shovel into the ground. As part of the design process, they videotaped scores of women farmers and gardeners. The most noticeable difference was the extreme angle of the shovel. But, it wasn't the women who were wrong, it was the shovel, said Brensinger, co-owner of the company that commissioned the study. "It wasn't what he was used to...
