The month's toll was fueled by a Memorial Day weekend in which six people were killed and 63 wounded, and a Mother's Day weekend when more than 50 people were shot, eight fatally. That brought the total number of people shot in Chicago so far this year to more than 1,500. At least 250 of them have died. [Snip] Chicago police say the violence has been stoked by gang conflicts and a proliferation of guns, mixed with weak gun law enforcement.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A day after a riot erupted outside a Donald Trump rally, Albuquerque officials blamed the downtown melee not on impassioned politics but on an unruly group intent on creating chaos in a city that has seen more than its share of violence. Some participants openly admitted that they set out to cause disruption. Many in the crowd were seen with gang tattoos and at one point chanted to Trump supporters that they controlled the streets. "I woke up all hung over and stuff," said Chelsea Rae Gray, a 24-year-old musician. "And then I said, 'Let's see...

McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna should be disqualified from prosecuting cases arising from the Twin Peaks biker shootout because he overstepped his authority by “commandeering” the investigation, a Houston attorney said Tuesday. “There is a big difference between advising and commandeering,” attorney Abigail Anastasio said. Anastasio represents Ray Nelson, 42, president of the Hill County Cossacks and one of 154 bikers indicted in the May 17, 2015, shootout at Twin Peaks in Waco that left nine bikers dead and more than 20 wounded. She filed a motion Tuesday in Waco’s 54th State District Court seeking to disqualify Reyna and...

Confronted with the bloodiest weekend in Chicago since being named police superintendent six weeks ago, Eddie Johnson on Monday called the gun violence "completely unacceptable" and said the dozens of shootings highlight "the uphill battle" confronting police. More than 50 people were shot, eight fatally, between Friday afternoon and early Monday, the city's most violent weekend since the end of September, according to a Tribune analysis. The tally included a 3 1/2-hour period early Saturday when one man was killed and 14 others were wounded — the equivalent of someone being shot every 14 minutes. Chicago is already closing in...

A Mexican judge has ruled that drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman can be extradited to face charges in the United States, the country's federal court authority said on Monday, days after he was moved to a prison on the U.S. border. He faces charges ranging from money laundering to drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder in cities that include Chicago, Miami and New York. Juan Pablo Badillo, one of Guzman's lawyers, said his client's legal situation was still being processed and that to extradite him now would be a violation of his human rights.

CHICAGO (WLS) - The violence plaguing Chicago did not stop this Mother's Day weekend. At least 49 people were shot and seven died over the last three days in locations all over the city. On Friday, mothers who lost children to violence pleaded for calm over the weekend, but their pleas seemed to fall on deaf ears. Community members spoke out against the violence on a weekend when mothers are supposed to be spending time with their children, not saying goodbye.

President Obama’s hometown is a war zone. The horrendous violence on the streets there has escalated. With warm summer-like weather, gang bangers were especially active, easily surpassing 2015’s Mothers Day carnage (3 killed, 25 wounded) and 2014’s (5 killed, 19 wounded). Meanwhile, the President of the United States ignores the battlefield conditions in the hometown he adopted as his political base. Nearly all of the violence is among young black males, making the rate of death in that particular demographic segment comparable to a serous war zone. A map of the violence this year to date from heyjackss.com shows where...

In a bid to solidify her leftist credentials, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton floated a couple of ridiculous ideas about how this country will improve when she is president. On the urban violence front, Clinton proposes to "reset" the relationship between police and street gangs. "The knee jerk attitude of the average American toward urban gangs is that they are a bad thing," she observed. "What they overlook is that joining a gang is like having a family. It's feeling like you're part of something bigger than yourself. I think this is a positive thing. Another positive is that the...

Sheriff David Clarke may soon win the moniker of “America’s Sheriff” away from Sheriff Joe Arpaio if he continues spinning these gems. Sheriff Clarke recently appeared on Fox News’ Hannity Show to discuss some comments made by Democrat presidential frontrunner and possible soon-to-be felon, Hillary Clinton. Earlier this week during a campaign stop in Connecticut, Clinton was attempting to connect with a voter who discussed his violence-filled past when she said some pretty ridiculous things. u said something that is so important for people to hear. You know, joining a gang is like having a family. It’s feeling like you’re...
