Top Pentagon officials late Sunday blasted The New York Times for a Memorial Day weekend editorial that criticized the military for naming bases after Confederate generals. The piece, titled “Why Does the U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy,” ran in Sunday’s print edition of the newspaper. An Army band played patriotic music on the front lawn of the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center Saturday while crowds gathered inside at exhibits for the 100th anniversary of Fort Benning. Called Columbus Salutes the Centennial, the free event featured living history performances, rock climbing , military displays and other equipment to recognize the post that was established as Camp Benning in 1918 to train soldiers during World War I. Captain Kristen Griest will become America's first ever female Army infantry officer as she graduates from training today. She has completed the Maneuver Captains Career Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, passing a two-month leadership course necessary for holding a command position. Captain Griest has already completed Ranger and Airborne School and could take charge of her infantry unit of about 150 soldiers in Spring next year.

Shots are believed to have been fired after as many as six people entered the Fort Benning Army base without authorization on Thursday afternoon. The base is located in Columbus, Georgia, near the Alabama line. Fort Benning police are searching for three to five males who may be armed and are believed to be hiding in the woods on the base, according to a Facebook post from Fort Benning. Kathy Alexander and her 13 pooches hope to bring warm fuzzy feelings to wounded soldiers across the nation. The dogs have been providing pet therapy to nursing homes for over 10 years, but in the next month they will be traveling to military bases across the country.
